Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 576cm Weather overview Clearing up Wind Light to moderate Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted on Tuesday 12th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Brilliant conditions on the slopes - and slightly off them as well - yesterday. As initially thought it seemed like there as much more than the reported amount of snow and this morning Kagura are giving us another 30cm. That sounds more like it as it was snowing for the day filling in tracks. Wasn't quite as busy as perhaps expected, so perhaps many people made their way back yesterday morning instead of getting in a half day. No complaints, I think everyone out there would have had tons of fun. Oh yes, 10-20cm in places here in Naeba village base area. And on to today. Which might even be better. Not only do we have that new extra snow but it also seems to be clearing up as well. The sun is out here in Naeba with more and more blue sky showing. There still seems to be lots of cloud over Kagura but I get the feeling it will be clearing up today. (Total guess by the way, there's no science involved!) Splash Bowl area at Naeba should be open at 10am today. I see the official snow depth for Kagura has increased by 10cm.... after 60cm of so in the last two days!! The snow depth doesn't really matter though does it, it's that new layer that we want the goods on. And we got the goods at the moment. ---- Official resort snow depth: Naeba - 270cm Kagura - 380cm Naeba Now 2012-2013 season Data as of Tuesday 12th February 2013 Total snowfall at base so far 576cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 42 days Most snowfall observed on 1 day 60cm (10th December) November 2012 snowfall 3cm observed on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 219cm observed on 15 days January 2013 snowfall 283cm observed on 19 days February 2013 snowfall 71cm observed on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Naeba. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 516cm Weather overview Heavy snow Wind Strong Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Friday 8th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Hurray! New snow. Booo! Strong winds. Perhaps not as much snow as we were hoping for, around 5cm here at Naeba base and both Naeba and Kagura reporting 10cm of fresh snow on the slopes. You're not going to be able to access all the top goodness though as strong winds are playing about with the lifts this morning. The only part of Kagura open is from the Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura Gondola - at the moment.... the resort is hoping to open up the Kagura No1 par and the No1 quad as well, but for now that's not the case. Tashiro is closed. Looks like Naeba is less affected and the No2 Gondola will be operating as planned, perhaps slower depending on those winds. The Dragondola is of course closed with Tashiro not being open today. Top lift - will depend on conditions. It's a cold morning and snowing now so let's hope for a good new layer of snow. Should be good tomorrow, especially if Kagura doesn't open and it's all fresh untouched for the weekend. Snow might continue into tomorrow but the wind should certainly ease off so the lifts should all be moving. ---- Official resort snow depth: Naeba - 260cm Kagura - 370cm Naeba Now 2012-2013 season Data as of Friday 8th February 2013 Total snowfall at base so far 516cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 39 days Most snowfall observed on 1 day 60cm (10th December) November 2012 snowfall 3cm observed on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 219cm observed on 15 days January 2013 snowfall 283cm observed on 19 days February 2013 snowfall 11cm observed on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Naeba. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 510cm Weather overview Light snow Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted on Tuesday 5th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . A few cm of fresh snow here in Naeba (up to 5 on the mountain) and 5-10cm being reported by Kagura this morning. Colder than it was yesterday and it's -3 degrees here at base and light snow is falling at the moment. Lower slopes decent visibility but the top half of Naeba is shrouded in cloud. There's a strong wind higher up as well and it's affecting the resorts. Here at Naeba the Number 2 Gondola and the Dragondola are not (going to be moving) this morning unless the wind calms down and the Tashiro part of Kagura is closed for the day. The Mitsumata Ropeway is open and that area is open from the Mitsumata area to the Kaguran Number 1 quad lift. The resort will later decide whether or not to open the top Number 5 lift at Kagura. The forecast has snow easing off later but hopefully back tomorrow. ---- Official resort snow depth: Naeba - 260cm Kagura - 370cm The top lift at Kagura is now open (though might not be operating today due to wind). The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . 20-30cm of snowfall is the headline this morning. And under-report I reckon up there. Not much of a wind and the snow coming down in style as I write this here in Naeba. That number is being reported by both Naeba and Kagura, but it's going to build up with the snow falling as it is right now. There's a light north westerly wind and it is about -7C at base here. All open as normal and those first riders will be up there sliding down that lovely new snow right now. Ii ne. A stronger wind is forecast for later in the day so that might affect things. Snow will hopefully and probably continue for the day today with brighter conditions likely tomorrow morning. Today is busier than a normal Monday though crowds should start to thin out around lunchtime. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Snow indeed for lots of yesterday but it was only light snow and didn't pile up in the way that brings us lots of new cm to report. In fact, new snow is 5cm at most and more like just a think layer down in the village area. This morning has started off cloudy. There's a chance we might get to see some clearing up today, but to start off with it's cloud cover. A calm morning with just a slight breeze and currently -6 degrees at base. Snow due back tomorrow and we could be on for a decent amount before the weekend starts. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . It was a sort of fine day yesterday with a kind of overcast feel to the day. Another 10cm or so of fresh snow since yesterday and light snow falling now. Fairly strong winds as well and because of those Tashiro is closed for the day and Kagura open from the Mitsumata Ropeway up to the No 1 quad lift. Dragondola and top lift at Naeba look to be closed this morning too but the Prince Number 2 Gondola is operating. Poor visibility up there. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . A very good start to the three day weekend here in Naeba. Up to 40cm of fresh snowfall on the slopes here this morning. Yey! What's more, no mad wind - or not enough - to hinder lifts from the looks of things. So all should be open this morning. There's going to be some fine untouched snow up there this morning. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Strong winds indeed messing us about this morning. Let's forget about the 'R' yesterday and focus on the 5cm or so of new snow this morning. And much colder after the warmth of yesterday. And it is snowing this morning still, along with those strong winds. It's limited here at Naeba with lots of lifts on hold especially the upper half of the mountain and the gondolas. Tashiro is closed again I'm afraid today, along with the Dragondola of course, and so Kagura is just the Mitsumata Ropeway up until the Kagura No1 pair lift. Hopefully things might improve, though the forecast doesn't look too hopeful on that score. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Aha, the warm spell did let up. I was almost daring it not to yesterday. But it did and this morning we are the happy recipients of new snow. Yes, fresh snow! 5-10cm here in Naeba and up to 20cm at Kagura. The downside to this is that strong winds again are messing with lifts and as such only the Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura Number 1 pair lift is open at Kagura. Looks like here in Naeba the top area will be closed, but we might expect changes to that especially if the winds die down some. This snow isn't supposed to last long, as tomorrow should be bluebird and warmer once again. But hey, new snow. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Bit of a wild day yesterday involving snow, strong winds and even a power black out here in Naeba for a short while. This morning there's slightly less wind, though it's far from calm, and about 10cm since yesterday though putting a number on it is difficult due to the wind. The resort is reporting that since last night and Kagura is reporting 20-30cm. We're back to something like normal this morning with most lifts up and running (or scheduled to anyway). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 530cm Weather overview Light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Variable Posted on Monday 4th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It looks like we have occasional snow flurries and mist about Nozawa Onsen this morning. The weekend crowds have moved on and there is sure to be a few fresh tracks around. There should be a warming trend today with the freezing level spiking around 1700 meters later today. Some light rain is also possible today. Yesterday was an ice rink on the mountain. Groomed runs were manageable with good edge control and a head for busy conditions. Patches of discontinuous fresh powder were available through the trees, but in between those was sheet ice and fields of death cookies. Challenging conditions too say the least. The resort is reporting between 2-4cm of new snowfall on the mountain. Following today's potential rain we should expect persistent snow showers with sunny breaks in between. Fingers crossed for some powder! Stronger winds higher on the mountain later might affect lift operations this morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 533cm Weather overview Heavy snow Wind Strong Temperature - Visibility Poor but improving Posted on Friday 8th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's absolutely dumping in Nozawa Onsen this morning! The heavy flakes started at about 7am and since then about 5-10cm has gathered on the railing outside. Its looks like this weather has really set in and snowfalls are forecast to continue for the rest of the day, along with extremely cold temperatures. A couple of strong wind gusts even down in the village means that some lifts may go on wind hold, especially higher up. At the time of writing the resort seems to be open as normal though... Yesterday was another nice day on the mountain. There were many powder stashes on offer around Yamabiko thanks to windblown snow being deposited on the leeward side of the summit ridge. Quality was very nice, light and dry on a crusty base. Death cookies which have been a problem off piste recently are gradually becoming buried. It is a long weekend this weekend for the Chinese New Year so crowd levels will be higher than usual about the slopes. It is one of the busiest weekends of the Japanese ski season and you can expect queues. Get up for first lifts to avoid the usual gondola lines that occur on public holidays. This weekend we should see some significant snowfalls. Snow should continue for the rest of the day, grading to snow showers overnight and tomorrow. Sunday looks to be another big day of snowfalls, especially overnight. During Sunday night 30cm or more is looking likely at this stage. Let's hope that happens. Have fun.
