There's some good new fresh snow to play in this morning and I intend to find it! It's still snowing now but it probably won't last long beyond this morning. The weekend. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. The resort themselves this morning are describing the snow conditions out there as 'corn snow' (thankfully it's not yellow!) and that from now it's time to enjoy spring. I think it's kind of a case of any proper blasts of winter now seen as a bonus, though I recommend you take a look back at what happened last March in the archive reports. You never know! We can surely expect more snow - just how much is anyones guess of course. Anyway this morning the sun is out and there's blue skies above us, with just a bit of thin cloud around. Quite chilly. Should be a fun morning with those first tracks. (The tree runs remain closed). --- Fireworks after nighta tomorrow. --- On this coming Sunday (and the Sunday after - 8th and 15th), it's time for a Madarao Speed Challenge again over on the No1 Paradise Course. As you might expect, it's all about speed and none of this messing about with silly turns. There's a number of categories and anyone can enter. It's free too. Up to 200 folk allowed. Entries accepted from 9am in the morning. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Quite wild conditions in the later part of yesterday with strong winds blowing around the snow that was falling. One of those days when it's difficult to put a number on it - the resort says 10-20cm, the snow around my place says around 15cm. Lots of windblown so it'll be more or less depending on where you are. Colder this morning too so hopefully there'll be some decent conditions this morning. Cloudy but feels like it might clear up more. More snow due later on tomorrow, hopefully avoiding rain that is also possible certainly at lower elevations. A few tanoshii events going on tonight... a screen made from snow (!) has been made on which to show some short films. I'm as curious as you are probably reading that! That'll be near the entrance to the skijo by the Madarao Kogen Hotel. And after nighta there's going to be some fireworks as well. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . 15-20cm of new snow and clearing skies this morning. What more could we want!? Electricity, for one. Yes, there seems to be some kind of a power cut at the moment and those ski lifts don't run on orange juice and so it looks like there'll be a delay to opening. I have to post this now though as I am off to Niigata this morning. Here's to a power driven day. --- UPDATE AT 9:20am.... Power On... Lifts are go! --- As many of you may well know, the Shinkansen train station down at Iiyama will be opening from 14th March - making Madarao easier to get to from Tokyo... hope on the Shink to Iiyama then a bus up to Madarao. Benri! They are officially saying 25 minutes but it can be done quicker than that. Good morning from Madarao, where the resort were last night saying that there had been 20cm of snowfall, and this morning apparently another 20cm 'since last night'. 20+20 = 40cm right? The official site is giving us 20cm over the last 24 hours though, so I'm a bit confused there. Whatever, it's a nice decent layer - and for the record here at base (which is the number I log anyway) it's around 20cm. Windy conditions yesterday were blowing around quite a lot. It's cold too this morning, so it's feeling very much like we are back into winter again. Which of course is great. The snow continues to fall and so we should be getting more to add to the haul so far. Should be great out there this morning. Winter conditions continue this morning with another 15cm being reported by the resort and at least that much at base around my place since yesterday morning. It's another cold morning, snow continues to fall but just at the moment I can just about see most of the mountain so visibility while limited higher up will generally be fair - at the start of the day anyway. Next week the forecasts are saying a return to spring like weather conditions so let's get as much snow in as possible before then. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Lots of fog around this morning. I think I'm still in Madarao Kogen, but can't see anything outside for the moment. Really very limited visibility now, hopefully that might improve by the time the lifts get moving. Clearer weather is actually forecast for today so it might well end up being lovely and clear. Just hard to imagine just at the moment! Tomorrow should start off sunny but cloud over later, and then those temperatures start to get lower. Snow on Monday and Tuesday. Personally I'm not getting too excited about it as I don't want to be disappointed if it doesn't amount to anything. Just hoping that we can end the season in style. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Looks like we don't have to wait until Sunday for clearer skies.... Still some cloud around but lots of blue sky directly above the mountain this morning. It's all looking very inviting after the fresh snowfall we have enjoyed too. Cold start, fresh snow yesterday, blue skies. Nice. (Though expect spring to give a strong reappearance from early next week). Tomorrow sees the start of the new Shinkansen extension running from Nagano through Niigata and over into Toyama and beyond. Of course the new station near Madarao in Iiyama is the big talking point here. How will it affect tourism to the area? We shall see!
