The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Furano looking stunning and the snow is great. Blue sky today, was shaping up bluebird but a few white and fluffies around. The snow is divine with about 6cm falling in Kitanomine Village and about knee deep on the side country on the resort. Nine of ten lifts now operating so the only one we are waiting on is the Kitanomine Gondola. Sun forecast today and tomorrow so let's hope for the weekend but the fact that Kitanomine Zone is open means it's easy and convenient to get to Furano Zone. If you have accommodation booked in Kitanomine Zone, it means you do not have to get yourself to Furano Zone. If your accommodation is in town, you only have to make your way to Kitanomine Zone (which is actually walking distance, just not a fun walk carrying skis if you are comfort inclined). Light breeze today, -2C in town at 10am. Resort listing the base as 95cm with 10cm of fresh. That would be erring on the low side which is always my preference with such things. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Heavy snow at Furano. Snow in the face for those who went up the mountain for a ski this morning. My friends are still up there and loving it. Visibility turning to poor now as the winds increase. Was still earlier but now a ground blizzard in Furano Town so undoubtedly getting windy on the resort. A good half metre of fresh down in Kitanomine village so there would be close to a metre of snow to play in at the top of the resort. At least thigh deep. Just a reminder that if you like the side country, backcountry, or cross-country skiing, always be sensible. Hire a guide unless you really know the terrain and weather conditions and by know, I mean you've been out with guides in the area before and you are prepared for all conditions. Not to be heavy, but in Central Hokkaido people have died near the piste simply because they saw great snow, headed out of bounds, then came unstuck. With the deepest respect to her friends and family, the person I am thinking of was at a resort in our region. She did not venture far off piste but came off her snowboard, could not be seen, could not be heard, and because our snow is so light and dry, could not climb back on her board. She perished. Her tragedy can serve to remind us all that what looks beautiful and benign (for what is more beautiful than soft, white snow?) can be treacherous. Like the blue sea or the gurgling river or a sunlit expanse of terrain. But we must respect nature always. She is beautiful and giving but she is a strength we cannot fathom. Be careful folks and have a great ski or board today. My family is sitting by the fire heading out for the occasional sled in the yard today, but our friends are loving the mountain. If the snow lets up, I am taking the young ones for a night ski tonight - the Kitanomine Zone is now fully open, night skiing included, wee hoo! Please take care. I just asked some boarders who came in for an early lunch how it was on the hill at Furano today, and they said, 'well it's midday and there is still waist deep powder'. So OK then. I do love understatement. Apparently some sidecountry runs are chest deep, too. Heh, heh, heh. Bit breezy but not windy, snow falling-falling-falling, a good metre of fresh up top in places. Yesterday was my day off and I cleared my driveway in Kitanomine twice, 25cm at about 9am and another 20ish at around 4pm. I like clearing snow. The resort is reporting 10-15cm of snow which seems very conservative indeed. It was -7C when I crossed the Sorachi river just now to come and tell you it is snowing and there is a lot of snow. That's really all there is to say now. It's very nice. It's very snowy. I am sorry if you went to night ski last night on my advice. I got the kids rugged up and hyped up at 6pm for this purpose only to discover it wasn't on in Kitanomine Zone like I thought it was. I checked this morning and they did run it but just for safety checks. So that is closed. Not open. But tonight it is open. Hope you found somewhere to sled yesterday evening - that's what we did. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Still snowing heavily in Furano. Lovely fat snow falling in Furano, typically dry and light. No wind but occasional breezes. Just saw a gust in town while I was at a red light. Minus seven degrees Celsius just now when I crossed the Sorachi River into town. Forecast is for (wait for it) snow. No breaks, no sun. I hope they are a tiny bit wrong because I like the sun. But this snow is fantastic. The skiing and boarding on the resort is superb. The gondola is running today on the Kitanomine Zone and most of it is now open. Those top runs are excellent. I was just talking to an American boarder who had never skied snow like it. She fell at the top and spent ages getting back up. I asked how deep it was and she said neck, but I think she meant while she was fallen over. Although she was petite... It is about thigh-deep at the top though. Really dry and floaty. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Snow ho ho in Furano today. Nice falls, more than 10cm in town, probably twice that up top. Kitanomine Gondola is the 10th and final lift to open and it is spinning today but not for passengers at this stage. Feels imminent. We will let you know. Warmish, about -3 in town, no wind. Fat stunning dry light glorious lovely floaty Central Hokkaido snow falling since I woke up at 6am. Happy Chrimbo today if it's your bag, and if it isn't, happy winter solstice! The latest Furano Now report can be found here . I went, I saw, I skied. It was my kind of skiing on the resort today - just spent the morning up there, both zones, and it was sunny at times, snowy at times, never windy, thigh deep if you look out for it, and knee deep on the sides of many runs - really easily accessible. The last two days had such a lot of snow and were so popular that I thought it might be a bit skied out today but nup. Nothing scratchy or even skied down, really. Was -6C in town just now when I crossed the Sorachi River. Resort are holding their base report at 180cm, but I have no doubt it's deeper. My house has more than a metre around it so... The depth is pretty irrelevant in Furano, what counts is fresh on top, and we have fresh on top with more falling lightly now. Very popular today and good skiing to be had but snow started falling around 2pm and the fresh will make tomorrow nice. Let's wait and see how much. No wind today, -8 in town, -11 on resort. Have a great New Year's Eve - Furano is traditional so most restaurants are closed today and tomorrow. The New Furano Prince Hotel has fireworks at midnight, three restaurants and a top floor bar that will have a pretty awesome view tonight. Just sort your transport home before you bundle the fam over there. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The morning started off cloudy and then we were hit with a period of strong sun breaking through the clouds, and now back to full cloud cover. The upper part of the mountain is enveloped by light cloud so there will be some compromise in visibility high up, but in general it is still good. Light snow has been continually falling, although it is really only the lightest of flurries at the moment. There was 2cm accumulation overnight. The forecast for the next few days is for continuous light snow, with a heavier fall on Saturday evening. Strong winds are on the radar for Sunday morning, bit these should pass by Sunday afternoon. There are quite a few course closures on the Kitanomine side at the moment, or coming up soon. These are for junior high school ski competitions, so it may be worth taking a break and to see how good these young athletes can ski the poles courses. It certainly inspires me to up my game! The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Windy but plenty on nice snow sums up the report today. The winds have arrived as forecast and have increased from light to moderate this morning in the village. I expect the situation to be gusty up on the mountain, particularly in the exposed areas. Tomorrow the winds will reduce a little before increasing again on Sunday to strong levels, and then reducing by Monday morning. We have been blessed by snow again overnight and I have recorded another 6cm in the village, so there will be some pretty decent depths on the ski area itself. It is currently snowing moderately and we expect the snow fall to continue through the day. Temperatures are pretty mild with -4c recorded at base level this morning, but it has already warmed up a couple of degrees since then. So not a particularly cold day, but the wind will definitely have an effect and a face mask would be a handy item to have in your pocket. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Well the morning has started on a very positive note. There is a good 12cm on fresh snow in the village since the last report went up which is going to mean some pretty serious powder areas on the mountain. First up gets the pick, but there will be plenty to go around. If powder is not your thing then the groomers are going to be in superb conditions with beautiful soft powder underfoot. There is very little in the way of breeze right now, and looking up reveals that it is high broken cloud with large patches of sunny skies showing. Tomorrow morning should be similar and then we will lose the sun from Friday. Light snow is expected to fall for the next 6 days with Sunday looking to be very windy. It is a milder day with -8c recorded in the village earlier this morning, but it has already warmed up substantially and I have just had a look at my outside thermometer which is reading -2c. The snow just seems to keep coming on a daily basis and this morning there is another 7cm to report. There is no snow falling at the moment but we can expect some light snow again from the afternoon. Temperatures should be back to colder norms from tomorrow, and tomorrow morning looks like some moderate winds will hit the resort, reducing a little on Saturday, and then Sunday could be quite gusty.
