Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1308m Weather overview Sunny with high clouds Wind Calm Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 9:12am on Friday 8th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's warm but sunny again this morning - the predicted rain fell during the night (yea!) but might again late in the day (boo!). Can't complain, really. It was a really fun day to be on the snow yesterday, despite some gluey sections on the slopes. Good for perfecting your balance. Especially telemark skiers, who really understand the flexible style and balance demand that freeheel skiing creates when the skis stop wanting to go forward. But I digress. Looks like mostly nice weather today and tomorrow, and then we might get back to some snow Sunday and next week as well. Spring today; winter will return! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 1330m Weather overview Snow Wind Moderate to strong Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted at 10:45am on Thursday 14th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I kind of feel like I'm repeating myself, as these cycles of warm, sunny, rainy, colder, snowing keep going on.... After some pretty heavy rain yesterday, we're back to snow again, with some occasionally strong winds from the north that could slow down some lift operations. Probably not a whole lot of new snow - maybe 5-10cm - but we are getting some mini-cornices forming outside the house, so the real ones are probably also getting bigger. Again (careful, backcountry adventurers, in the sunny days ahead). And (wait for it...) it will be sunny again from tomorrow! I would say another cycle, although this time it looks like the freezing line will be staying pretty high, meaning warmer temperatures over the weekend, sun for the next couple of days until (blech) it starts to rain again, perhaps even pretty heavy around Monday. Although, to be an optimist, you have to admit that a little rain can lubricate that sticky spring snow on the ski runs. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1323m Weather overview Clear Wind Strong Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 1:06pm on Wednesday 13th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's warm (and it was warm yesterday, too), and we're just waiting now for the rain to start falling. With the local weather reports giving an 80-90 percent chance, I think it's likely that things are going to be wet soon. With a strong west wind, we're also watching the snowpack get gobbled up. Spring is definitely here--for the moment. The freezing line continues its crazy up and down movement; it will be at about 3,000 meters midday, but will fall all the way to sea level by this evening, so we may be back to cold and snow after warm and rain. In the backcountry, keep an eye on the cornices--they're starting to fall with the warm weather, and they're big. We saw some serious slides and debris inside the caldera around Mt. Myoko yesterday; you don't want to be under them when they happen to come down. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . All the local reports aren't in yet, but I'm off to enjoy this perfectly bluebird day (yes, I've said I prefer a day of heavy snow - but it is March! What are you going to do?). Time for a climb, I think; there's probably some good snow on north faces. And with possible heavy rain on the schedule for tomorrow, too, it's time to act today. OK, with only two of the resorts having submitted reports, here's the word: current temperature is about -1°C at the base of Akakan; no fresh snow, the wind is light from the west. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1335m Weather overview Cloudy with showers at times Wind Strong westerly Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 10:27am on Monday 18th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The wind is way up, the rain is occasionally sprinkling down, but no heavy rains just yet on a Monday in Myoko. You can almost see the snowpack decreasing in the breeze, though; there's still a good amount of snow up on the hill, but the roadside walls are just falling away rapidly. It is WARM, too - all the morning reports are in the just-under-plus-ten degrees area (except Akakura Onsen, which didn't file today, and Seki, which has listed a cryptic "00" for the temperature....) Looks like rain will continue through tomorrow, when one again the freezing line will be coming way don the mountain, bringing some snow with it. It's definitely been a blustery March this year (unfortunately without the powder we've seen over the last few seasons). The high wind makes lift closures possible, so check before you go, especially the gondolas at Suginohara and Akakan. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sunday is starting out better than we originally expected; after two warm, sunny days, it suddenly got cold late yesterday afternoon, with a bit of light snow in the early evening. It's back to the sun again today, and looks like it will be warm again (the early reports are all over on temperatures; the positive numbers are probably the later reports). A good day to get out; the next few days are likely to be rainy. - Myoko Now: Tuesday 19th March 2013
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1335m Weather overview Sunny with some cloud Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 12:05pm on Tuesday 19th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The weather report predicted rain, but luckily that seems to have stayed in the northern part of Niigata Prefecture. We here in this little triangle tucked into Nagano (and a lot of people do think that Myoko is in Nagano) are enjoying a sunny, very spring day. VERY spring--out for a light ski hike this morning with the dog, and the conditions are like what we'd normally find in April. Looks like a really short hiking season; too bad, because it's a gret way to keep in shape (for both dog and man) between the end of daily skiing and summer activities. We should have a couple more waves of cold and warm weather in the coming days, including the possibility of some snow. Not widely optimistic about one last big dump of powder, though--it does happen, but this might not be the year for it. But there's still snow out there, so enjoy the sun and skiing! 2:40pm update: Just a quick update: it's gotten colder, and turned to soup outside. Heavy fog. Can't see a thing. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a pretty gray day out there today; not a problem if there's a good snowfall along with the clouds and fog, but we've just got a light dusting of pretty wet snow and a cold wind coming out of the north. Alright, this deep snow fan admits it: once spring is here, it might as well be nice weather if serious snow isn't coming down. Could get a little bit brighter later in the day; might see some rain tomorrow and Monday, too... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The next weather cycle has in fact arrived, with blowing snow and temperatures back in the minus again. It's not as blustery as earlier this morning (although we do have new cornices on the snowpack outside the house, and drifts alongside the car). Lifts are running fine now (checked on the Akakan gondola; no warnings from Suginohara this morning). It's nice to have things a little cleaner and whiter - it would be great to get 30+cm and really enjoy some light snow, but I doubt that much will fall. The local forecast is for the snow to taper off later in the day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Back to sun and blue skies again today; with just a little fresh snow on top to keep things nice and shiny (for a bit, anyway). It's starting out a bit cool, too... the sun is going to warm things up, but it may not be quite so springy - meaning lots of melt, and really sticky snow - as we have seen recently. If it's not going to snow, it might as well be nice. It might snow a bit late tonight, in fact, as the temperature goes down. The forecast has it staying low, too -- maybe we'll get a break in the strong recent cycles of warm, cold, sun, rain (repeat). I feel like I could pull out some of my earlier reports for March and just use them again: it was snowing yesterday, it's perfectly blue and sunny today.
