The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Nice morning yesterday but snow was falling in the afternoon as expected and this morning I have slightly over 8cm of fresh snowfall to report to you on the ground here at base. It is noticeably warmer too this morning and something of a contrast with the extreme cold of recent days. Lots of cloud around and light snow falling at times this morning though not right at this moment at base (though it looks like it probably is higher up). Wind is going to be a factor today and at the start of the day the top lifts are on hold at each of the resort areas. More details below as always. The forecast for the coming days still isn't looking particularly snowy at the moment and we can perhaps expect some periods of sunshine at times. Hopefully there might be some minor top-ups as well to keep things in decent condition. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 5am: -2℃, 10cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -4℃, 20cm snowfall with snowdrifts developments. Annupuri 1150m: -10℃, N18m/s, snowdrifts up to 100cm in west area. Hirafu1250m:-6℃, N15m/s, light snowfall with snowdrift development. Kamui cape lighthouse: ENE10m/s, 1005hPa, 3.6m waves. Although the weather pattern is typical winter, a small Low is located around Shakotan peninsula is making the wind and snow shift easterly. The temperature is relatively high. The snowdrifts developed in the western areas are from the Low pressure snowfall. The wind below 1000m elevation has been stagnating around 12m/s and the snowpack is relatively stable. However, the easterly wind formed some slabs in Kozan no Sawa (Backbowl) sidewalls (1200m) making the avalanche risk high. The west-facing slopes below 1000m is blanketed with heavy wind-affected snow. Stimulating the knolls and cornices may trigger a slide. Beware. Beware of sudden weather changes. Thunderclouds may develop and lightning may fall especially along the ridgeline. Try to throw away metal and carbon equipment get down low if you feel electricity in the air. Better not go up high today. Gates opening is undecided. Follow the patrol's instructions and never duck ropes. There will be no Avalanche Info tomorrow. The ski patrol will evaluate the risks and decide gates’ opening. Please respect the Niseko Rules. --- Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day): Niseko Grand Hirafu The upper Ace Number 3 and 4 and King Number 3 and 4 lifts are on hold at the start of the day due to wind conditions. Niseko HANAZONO Resort The top Hanazono Number 3 lift is on hold at the start of the day due to wind conditions. Niseko Village The Niseko Gondola and top Wonderland Chair lift are on hold at the start of the day due to wind conditions. Good morning from Nozawa, and the good news continues with another 50+cm of snow being reported by the resort up on the top Yamabiko area, and a very decent 25+cm at base areas too. (I have taken the Uenotaira numbers out this morning as there's obviously a mistake going on with them. They'll be back!) But basically the continuous delivery of snowfall since last Wednesday has continued and there's some very deep and fine snow conditions on the mountain. We couldn't really be asking for more at this moment and if you are one of the people about to arrive in Nozawa you can feel very pleased with your timing! The snow clouds should continue to be over Nozawa today and tomorrow so there's more on the way. Is that some clearer skies I can see on the forecast for mid week? Looks like it. And then more snow lined up as we get to the weekend. Let's Nozawa, as they say. I know I'm going to. Or during it, really; we keep getting some blue skies and a moment of brightness, and then it gets dark again and the snow starts falling. A few flashes of lightning last night, a local sign of heavy snows coming, but in the end there wasn't that much overnight. Pretty good winds very early this morning, so once again the totals have a little bit of a question mark behind them. Looks like we could even get a lot for the rest of the day, then a short break, but the heavy stuff may be back again before we know it! Personally, I'm looking forward to some sleep, some muscle rubs.... And Akakan hits three meters! I don't think we ever saw that last year. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . A very good morning to you all from Naeba everybody. Powder! This is definitely the word for today! With over 2 meters of snow fall within the last week and 30cm+ in the last 24 hours there is no lack of fresh powder to be had. For sure today is the day to get your powder board or fat boy skis out! Conditions are soft, surfy and buttery out there! It is worth noting that Naeba Ski Area is only reporting 20cm of fresh snow today compared to my observed 30cm, as well as yesterday where they posted between 50-70cm whereas I felt the true number was 80cm. These differences are likely to happen as sometimes it can be difficult to pin point exactly how much snow has fallen as measurements can vary a lot depending on exactly where the measurement is taken. In general though please be re-assured that when I take a measurement I always strive to take it in a place that fairly reflects the actual snow fall. E.g. I don't find a pile of snow that has been created by the wind etc. Looking on the weather forecast is for heavy snow until Tuesday. A short break and then heavy snow again as of Friday. Yep! Yep! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa and lots more snow to add this morning. The official numbers seem a bit wonky when you include what they reported yesterday afternoon but there they are below. Yamabiko now all of a sudden with a snow depth of 3m. Very nice. Snow continues to fall this morning and there's a good chance it is going to continue through the day and tomorrow and into Tuesday too. We're really getting a sustained delivery this time. January 15th is always a big date on the calendar for Nozawa Onsen with the Dosojin Fire Festival. Highly recommended! Not much more to say this morning other than... excellent! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have just about enough to add 1cm of fresh snow to the report. It's a thick dusting kind of thing. That is all something of a contrast this weekend with the 131cm of snowfall recorded in Yuzawa (in Niigata) over the last two days* and even more in Myoko. Wow! (* Our snow is much better though.) I'm just joshing - I have never been there, though I would certainly like to. And seriously, I do encourage people to read the other reports as well, if not only to get a wider view of what is happening in different regions of Japan, not just Niseko. Anyway, we enjoyed some nice blue skies yesterday morning with things clouding over gradually later on. This morning we start the day with lots of blue sky and just a bit of cloud in places. The sun is currently shining through my window. It is remaining cold and seems calm. Snow is forecast for today and so we can probably expect a change this afternoon, though there doesn't look to be much on the forecast until around Thursday after today. In the meantime it should be a fun morning on the groomers. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -10℃, scarce snowfall. Moiwa850m: -12℃, 10cm snowfall and snowdrifts development. Annupuri 1150m: -14℃, NW8m/s, 15cm new snow. Hirafu1250m: -13℃, light breeze and scarce snow. Kamui cape lighthouse: NE3m/s, 1003hPa, 1.6m waves. Benkei cape lighthouse: ENE9m/s. Calm morning as the isobars got spread out by a small low-pressure system. Yesterday afternoon’s light storm made some shallow snowdrifts develop in SW area above 800m altitude and reset the slopes. This newest layer (Jan 14th) is likely to slide in steep slopes, and will become a potential trigger layer in the future snowpack. This morning’s avalanche hazard is low, however more snow is forecasted in the afternoon. Hazard level will rise if new snowdrifts start to develop. All gates are scheduled to open, listen to the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of the gates. Do not duck ropes. Gate 9 (waterfall) is scheduled to open today. Beware not to fall into streams. The water is ice cold and hypothermia can easily be fatal. Not much snowfall, but the groomers conditions are fantastic. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao on what must surely be the coldest of the season so far. The resort is reporting a temperature of -16C up on the top area and it's not that much warmer down here either... -10C. Brrrrrrrr. Even better is that we have a very nice fresh layer of snowfall on the ground, 19cm of it on my car outside and so I would imagine a good 30+cm up on the slopes. Snow likely today, tonight and into tomorrow though clearer skies are currently forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sorry to be a little delayed today but, well, uh....There's a whole lot of snow out there (it deserves stronger language, but this is a family-friendly site). And it keeps on coming down. And it's been cold, with iced-up cars and snow throwers (much banging on metal to get things free). Yesterday I reported 60cm, right? Later, in the early afternoon, I poked in my study spot and found 44cm of new. This morning, 51cm. There's a lot of wind, my measuring spot is in a somewhat sheltered spot... so nearly a meter on top of 60 and still going. Last week there were almost no snow walls along the roads; now it's hard to tell which pension or hotel is back there behind the white. Seems like it was pretty tough skiing yesterday, with a lot of people taking some pretty good tumbles in the super-deep and fairly heavy snow (lots of tips dropping into unmoveable stuff, I was told). Could be more of the same today. The wind is down in general, but then a big blast of wind comes through and helps shape the big drifts that are all over the place now. Very Myoko, though! Just under 15cm on the ground here and resorts reporting as follows: Hakuba Cortina: 30-40cm at base and 40-50cm up top. Hakuba Goryu: 20-40cm Hakuba 47: 30-40cm Hakuba Happo-one: 10cm I think Hakuba Cortina was jealous yesterday as today they zoom to the top of the 'most new snow' for today. But the numbers are good for everywhere, even if Happo is curiously declaring only 10cm. Anyway...fresh snow everywhere! There's a fairly strong wind northerly wind this morning and at the start of the day it is affecting top lifts at Goryu/47, Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen. The top areas of those resorts are unavailable at the time of posting this report and wind is forecast for the day - check with the resorts for the latest on that situation through the day. (It looks like the Osaru area of the 'Tree Riding Zone' at Hakuba 47 will be open from today). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 80cm! Snowfall at base this season 438cm Posted on Sunday 15th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . A very good morning from Naeba everybody. There is so much snow! As of yesterday's report the snow has not really abated with some periods of the day experiencing more than 10cm of snow per hour! Conditions are deep and powdery with powder pockets available most of if not the whole day. Today's snow is a little difficult to exactly pin point in terms of centimeters on the ground. In some places there is well over a meter of fresh snow accumulation whereas in other places the number is closer to around 60 centimeters due to the wind stripping certain areas. The most consistent measurement I am getting though is 80 cm which is why that is the official measurement for today. It's a really huge number to be sure - and it is also more than the resort themselves are saying themselves - but it's what we are measuring so... :) The weather forecast is still predicting for this storm to carry on until Tuesday and then a brief respite with heavy snow again starting from Friday afternoon. In certain areas the snow is deep enough to easily bury a fully grown adult. Be safe out there kids!
