The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Fresh snow! Morning from Hakuba and how about some fresh snowfall to play in this morning? I wasn't hear yesterday so I don't know the full story, though this morning there's up to 5cm of snow in some base areas - Goryu is reporting 5cm, Happo-one is reporting 10cm up at Riesen and I see Hakuba 47 talking about 25cm or so (though that may be wind-blown). Sounds like it was a blustery winter-like day, especially on mountain, and am hearing about the 'yellow sand' being blown over as well. Investigations are required... And it is a nice morning to investigate too with lovely blue skies all round. Fine weather is expected over the next few days along with a real warm up in temperatures. Later in the week rain is expected too though different forecasts disagree on how much. I think it would be fair to say that we are in the middle of spring taking over from winter. Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 is reporting 25-30cm of fresh snowfall in places. All of Hakuba 47 remains open. Official snow depth: Upper: 300cm Base: 115cm Hakuba 47 plans to be open until Sunday 7th May. Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu is reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall on upper areas. The Iimori area of the resort is now closed. The Toomi and the upper areas remain open. Official snow depth: Alps: 280cm Toomi: 110cm Hakuba Goryu plans to be open until Sunday 7th May. Hakuba Happo-one: Hakuba Happo-one is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall (Riesen quad top). The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . This is it folks --- the last day of the 2016/2017 season here in Madarao. And what a beauty of a morning it is too. It is going to be a fun day and no doubt pretty sad come this evening too. In terms of snow, there could surely be another week or two of life in the season. But the resort plans this to be the last day, so that's it. The official snow depth on this last day of the season is 250cm and the mountain really is in excellent shape when you consider it is early April. I have had a really great season and from what I can tell when speaking to people on the lifts, so have a lot of visitors. And there have been more of them from overseas this season too - indeed this season there has been another large increase in people reading my reports. Thank you! I'm going to enjoy a few lie-ins this coming week, and then perhaps get out to Nozawa and Shiga Kogen for a bit more skiing. as they are open into May. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba for the last time this season everybody. As predicted today is an absolute corker of a day. Perfect blue skies and relatively cold temperatures have combined to give us a perfect day to just get out there and enjoy the mountain. Conditions will get a little slushy later on but it is not going to be the slush fest that is more standard for a closing day. Many thanks for all of you loyal readers who stayed with us through the season. There will be no more Naeba Now daily reports from here on in this season. As it currently stands Naeba is planning to operate on weekends only, and then daily through Golden Week from 29th April until Sunday 7th May. This is obviously subject to change relatively fast however as we come into the progressively warmer temperatures of spring. Ah, but I did prepare this yesterday >>> A look back at March 2017 and the season so far So, it is that time of the month again; time for me to take a bit of a look back at the month of March and the season so far. I’m going to keep it short this time and leave most of my words for my main season review that will be appearing when the season finishes in early May. Here’s the observed snowfall measured by me at base during the month of March over the last five seasons: March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm And the total observed snowfall measured by me at base during the season up until the end of March: 2016/2017 season until the end of March 2017: 688cm 2015/2016 season until the end of March 2016: 986cm 2014/2015 season until the end of March 2015: 1141cm 2013/2014 season until the end of March 2014: 1150cm 2012/2013 season until the end of March 2013: 1459cm Clearly, we are going to end this season with about 3m less than last season and about 4.5m behind the previous two seasons. That’s a fair chunk, but let me again please emphasise that many people coming here will of course not be comparing with previous seasons and have been plenty happy with what they have experienced. Still, I’m hoping that next year we’ll see a change in trend and get to see more. Looking forward to this month, to get an idea of how much snow we might be able to expect in April, here’s how much there has been observed in recent years: How much snow fell (AT BASE) in April 2017: ?? How much snow fell (AT BASE) in April 2016: 6cm How much snow fell (AT BASE) in April 2015: 3cm How much snow fell (AT BASE) in April 2014: 13cm How much snow fell (AT BASE) in April 2013: 32cm Once again ---- important, this is all about snowfall at base! And remember, especially in late season there might be no fresh snowfall here at base, but snow falling higher up on the mountain. I will of course try to report that when it happens in the daily reports, but my observed number each day is from my base measuring point. --- Here are the numbers that the Japan Meteorological Agency have recorded in Kutchan Town for March and the season so far: March 2017: 90cm March 2016: 125cm March 2015: 141cm March 2014: 118cm March 2013: 124cm 2016/2017 season until the end of March 2017: 831cm 2015/2016 season until the end of March 2016: 823cm 2014/2015 season until the end of March 2015: 966cm 2013/2014 season until the end of March 2014: 922cm 2012/2013 season until the end of March 2013: 1024cm Full season analysis coming in early May when I finish up for the season. Yes, there's some cm on the ground and I see Kumanoyu are reporting 5-10cm of fresh this morning. And it is snowing right now. Visibility generally poor this morning. Tomorrow the forecast tells us to expect sunshine and clear skies... should be a good day. Nishitateyama, Hasuike and Kidoike areas are now closed with a few more closing for the season at the end of tomorrow. Still, most areas remain open for the weekend and there's definitely no shortage of snow! We have received a small amount of fresh snow overnight so this should mean that conditions are fairly nice on piste today. For today the forecast is for a little snow during the day with the heaviest snow coming overnight. For tomorrow we still have clear weather predicted so it should be a pretty good day to finish off the season with. Woop! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello from Hakuba. I was up at Hakuba 47 yesterday afternoon - the weather was fine, but it did get rather windy. It sounds like fairly strong winds continued overnight. This morning there's lots of cloud around and rather limited visibility in some places by the looks of some of the webcams. The forecasts how the chance of a bit of snow overnight tonight so things are keeping relatively cold as we head into April. Today is the last day of the season for a bunch of lifts over at Tsugaike Kogen today, with more lifts around the valley closing at the end of this coming Sunday. From Monday, we'll be left with just 47/Goryu, Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen open through until Sunday 7th May. Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 is reporting 0cm of fresh snowfall. Just a dusting of snow to report this morning - just about enough to declare 1cm! - and it's a fine spring morning, though it still feels pretty cold. Certainly colder than we are used to for the end of March. It doesn't look like we should expect much snow over the next few days and more chance of sunshine. Then again you never know this season, it hasn't seemed to want to stop!
