  • Madarao Now: Thursday 4th January 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 21cm Snowfall at base this season 407cm Weather overview Snow Wind NW Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Thursday 4th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning all. It's another snowy morning here and I have 21cm to report which is about the same as the resort itself is reporting this morning. Snow continues to fall and visibility is limited at the start of the day. We're not expecting too much snow from now on and possibly even some sunshine tomorrow (maybe even later today?) More snow due on Saturday and then in the first part of next week. Regular snowfall. Sounds good! It should be a very good day today. :) Madarao Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Thursday 4th January 2018 Total snowfall at base 407cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 19 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 58cm (on 27th December) November 2017 snowfall 60cm reported on 3 days December 2017 snowfall 280cm reported on 13 days January 2018 snowfall 67cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Madarao. • Furano Now: Thursday 4th January 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 347cm Posted on Thursday 4th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a very good day, with the gondola getting back in operation and a good dump of 12cm of new snow. Suddenly there seem to be more people on the Kitanomine Zone with overseas guests seeming to out number the locals for the first time this season. Today looks like a good one in terms of weather. The high broken cloud is letting through plenty of sun and just a little wind here at base. The wind will be a bit stronger up on the mountain but certainly not gusty. While there is no new snow to report there is still plenty of fun to be had in the 12cm from yesterday. Kitanomine Zone open. Furano Zone open. • Shiga Kogen Now: Thursday 4th January 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 47cm Snowfall at base this season 427cm Posted on Thursday 4th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . I had to shovel my way out this morning. Heavy snowfall alert. It isn't actually snowing as hard now - though still coming down at a good pace - and I had close on 50cm of new snow to move earlier. There's still a wind blowing it all around as well, so it feels pretty stormy. I have to get back out there... snow should ease off by tomorrow. Ignore Sun Valley having an official snow depth of 70cm. That just has to be silly! ;) Official snow depths numbers reported by different areas of Shiga Kogen: Please note that these numbers are the official numbers that ski resorts publish and we check and update them each morning. • Myoko Now: Thursday 4th January 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 56cm Snowfall at base this season 673cm Posted on Thursday 4th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The round soft hail of yesterday has turned to nicer, flakier snow — and a lot of it. Nearly 60cm so far, and it’s still really coming down. It hasn’t settled at all, though, so it could still be pretty “exciting” off the groomed (and I mean that in all possible ways!). Hard to believe it’s still only the fourth day of 2018 - both because of the conditions, and because it seems like we’re continuously shoveling and blowing snow (and we’re just not yet in the snowy groove...) • Nozawa Now: Thursday 4th January 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 306cm Posted on Thursday 4th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday the Nagasaka Gondola was able to get moving soon after 10:30am, meaning all of the lifts were in action. This morning another 20-33cm of fresh snowfall is being reported by the resort (since yesterday morning) and I am measuring 25cm to go on the report. A good number indeed and while visibility is very limited especially on the upper parts of the mountain this morning, the snow should be worth it. A cold start to the day so wrap up well and enjoy. We are expecting the snow to ease off by later this afternoon and tomorrow to be generally cloudy. (Sometimes those days end up being lovely and sunny - that'd be good if it happened). Further snowfall is due to move into the region come Saturday with clearer weather again on Sunday. Oh yes, and more snow as we enter the new week. Many people will be back to work now and so expect Nozawa to be quieter. Monday 8th January is a national holiday which means that the upcoming weekend is a 3 day one for many, so it will be another of the peak weekends of the winter season. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 39cm Snowfall at base this season 380cm Posted on Wednesday 3rd January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's snow storm time in Shiga Kogen this morning. Heavy snow, blowing winds and limited visibility. Okushiga Kogen is reporting a whopping 50-60cm of fresh snowfall. I am measuring an average of 39cm from my three points. Strong winds are blowing it all around, so it is one of those days when measuring is... difficult. Information is limited early on but expect some disruption to the operation of some lifts. Check with the resorts if you plan on being out. I suspect many will be sitting it out and checking out an onsen, just like the monkeys. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A stormy night, with lightning and one big thunderclap - a sure sign that we’re going to get heavy snow, and that it likely will be graupel, or soft hail. And that’s what we got, little pellets of snow, and what’s still coming down. Pretty strong winds from the northeast at moments; it’s also getting pretty foggy out there as I write today’s report. Over 40 cm of fresh again today, but that’s dense stuff that’s no fun to slog through in the backcountry. Can be hard to go downhill unless you have a steep slope! No problem, of course, on the groomers - probably a better choice today! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 281cm Posted on Wednesday 3rd January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's a mad busy one. Mostly due to what nature is delivering - which is snow and wind. The snow bit is great. The wind bit... less so. Due to the wind the Nagasaka Gondola is not moving at the start of the day but all other lifts seem to be managing - though there may be some reduced speed operations going on out there. Visibility on the slopes, especially the upper ones, is limited. Wind is probably not making it feel particularly friendly out there - as happy as we are to see good snow falling. I think some will be sitting this one out; perhaps soaking it out in an onsen. Snow is forecast for tomorrow as well though perhaps lighter and the winds will have eased off. So it should be a good day. Take care out there everyone. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good Morning from Naeba! It's still snowing outside as "Storm Dougle" is giving us his best! The wind is breezing through the valley as a pace, so there are currently a number of lifts on standby this morning. This coupled with cool air temperatures will result in a chilly day. The fresh 53cm of snow will be fun on the pistes, particularly up at the top if Takenokoyama Pair Lift if they manage to open it today. The forecast looking forwards is for "Storm Dougle" to stick around for another couple of days, with the heaviest snow falling throughout today. Skies are expected to clear somewhat on Friday, before the snow is back over the weekend. Kelangan! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. Fairly strong winds yesterday with snow falling on the mountains. And this morning here are the fresh snowfall headlines, as reported by the ski resorts: Hakuba Goryu: 2-5cm Hakuba 47: 5cm (they were reporting 10cm on the upper slopes yesterday. Unclear.) Hakuba Happo-one: 2cm at top of the Gondola Hakuba Cortina: 25-30cm Check out the numbers from Cortina. I'm sure there will be more than a few people heading out there after seeing what they are reporting this morning. Looks like the resorts to the north of the valley got the best deliveries. It's quite windy this morning too in upper areas, not so down in the village, and so some higher lifts may be operating at reduced speeds. I can see that the Gondola and top lifts at Happo-one are on hold at the start of the day as well due to the wind. Fingers crossed that will ease off and the lifts can get moving. There is lots of cloud around this morning - light snow falling earlier on but right now mostly just cloudy with some blue sky appearing in places. Feels like it might be clearing up... We're still seeing potential heavy snow on the forecast for tonight and tomorrow though. A nice deep fresh layer of snow is always welcome of course, so bring it on. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It's snowing! A good 15-20cm of snow on the ground this morning and it is going to be adding up the way it is falling now. The forecast is looking good too. Snow expected through today, getting heavier tonight and tomorrow and hopefully through into Thursday as well. All of the Shiga Kogen resort areas are open and most courses are available. There are still a few areas not yet 100% open - those being Terakoya through Hoppo, as well as Sun Valley and Hasuike). Surely after the next few days we'll be able to proudly proclaim 'fully open'. Looking forward to being able to say that. In the meantime, wrap up well and be prepared for the wintery conditions over the next few days.
