The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . It's a clear start today, with a few clouds drifting about the valley and a light wind. After the 51cm of new snow received until yesterday morning, surprisingly only 6cm further accumilated in the past 24 hours. The strong winds yesterday will likely have both impacted this accumlation, and also shifted significant amounts of snow about the mountain so expect some deep snow drifts on lee-side (southerly) slopes ! This also means there will likely be some scouring occuring on windward (northerly) slopes, so pick your ski runs wisely today. For th remainder of today, we can expect light to moderate winds, accompanied by cloud blowing in and out of the valley. Visibility will be variable as a product of this. We may also recieve a small accumlation of new snow today and overnight tonight. Looking fowards, the forecast indicates an unstable week ahead. Snow is predicted on and off, with accumilations most likely occuring on Tuesday night. The wind will be persistant this week, only calming to 5kmph on Thursday. The air temperature will remain comfortably below 0°C unti at least Thursday also, with daytime highs maxing out at -1°C. After a calm day on Thursday, stormy weather will be pushing back in on Friday, with air temperatures plummeting again to highs of -6°C overnight on Saturday. Snow and moderate wind will also be back for another round of winter over the weekend. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Temperatures are very cold this morning and the highest we will get to in town is around -8c. As is very often the case with these kinds of temperatures, it is clear weather with blue sky abound. There is a constant light wind blowing and I would expect it to be a little stronger higher up on the mountain. Yesterday there was a decent amount of snow that accumulated through the day which measured 6cm in Kitanomine. Overall it looks like a great day out there. Kitanomine zone open. Furano zone open. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. Just got back from digging out of my home as we have a lot of fresh snowfall this morning. Lots and lots of snow. Wind has been a factor since yesterday and so it has been blown around making numbers varied this morning. For example, Kumanoyu are reporting about 40cm. My excitable friend is saying 'over 80cm'. It has to be said that he always tends towards, er, rather large numbers! I have taken three measurements - 46cm, 54cm and 64cm. My usual measuring point is the mid one, so that is what I am logging up for the report today. Whichever number you prefer, they'll all big numbers. A lot of fresh snow everywhere. It is still snowing but visibility is improved at the moment, but still limited in places. Take care out there this morning. Beware of deep snow! (I'm not joking!) The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Weather conditions were perhaps for the braver folk yesterday with snow being the order of the day. And lots of it too. By mid-afternoon, Happo-one were reporting 30cm of snowfall ‘since morning’... along with some very limited visibility and windy conditions too. Fresh snow headlines from this morning: Hakuba Goryu: 5-15cm Hakuba 47: 10-20cm Hakuba Cortina: 20-30cm Hakuba Happo-one: 10cm I suspect there will be more than that - possibly a fair bit more than that. Winds have been pretty strong since yesterday and so there's been a lot of snow blowing about, which will be affecting the numbers. I think the only way to check things is to get the on the skis or board and check it out. I suspect there'll be some very nice conditions out there this morning. However, strong winds are unfortunately still affecting some resorts at the start of the day. The upper areas of Happo-one - including the Gondola - are on hold and it looks like lifts are Hakuba 47 and the upper areas of Goryu are on hold. Tsugaike looks open though. Best to check with them for the latest. A mix of weather and visibility this morning too. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The snow really started coming down during the day yesterday! Nozawa was reporting 20-25cm of fresh snowfall across the mountain by 3pm. This morning we're still dealing with lots more additional snow - this morning the resort is reporting up to 46cm of snow up on Yamabiko... that's on top of the snow they were reporting yesterday at 3pm. So I am not wrong, they are effectively reporting over 70cm up top with 45cm at base since yesterday morning. There's certainly a lot of fresh snow built up even down here at base. Tons of it. So while conditions might still be dicey for some people - poor visibility, wind, deep snow - if you are keen to brave the current conditions you'll be rewarded with some excellent snow conditions. More snow during the day today and the snow clouds may still be over Nozawa tomorrow too. Fingers crossed for less wind and improved visibility. Take care out there and have fun. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba! It was a snow-globe day yesterday, with "Storm Halle" hitting with full force. This is the first significant storm system we have had move through since later January, so the fresh, deeper snow is a welcomed surprise. With heavy snow continuing to fall as I type, we have already had accumilations of 51cm in the past 24 hours. The snowfall is forecast to ease off as the day goes on, however there are no signs of any let up yet. The air temperature is a cool -7°C this morning, with no expectation that it will increase above this today. The wind has dropped significantly, however there is a breeze continuing to bring in this heavy snowfall. The pistes will be fresh and fun, with fresh lines for everyone, however the lifts are likely to be slow to get going this morning due to the snowfall. Looking forwards, "Sotmr Halle" looks set to stick around until tomorrow morning, with further snowfall lightening but continuing throughout today. The winds will continue to ease all through the night, dropping off signfiicantly tomorrow. The air temperature will also increase tomorrow morning to a more comfortable -1°C, however it is predicted to remain below 0°C until at least Thursday. We can expect the snow to clear tomorrow breifly, however it will be back on Tuesday with further moderate snowfall. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here More fresh snow this morning with 21cm measured and added to my reports. Not bad... not bad. (I'm just kidding - it's really great!) But forgive me for refraining from my head overheating and exploding (or is that imploding?) due to overuse of cheesy over-the-top descriptions. It's kind of amusing in a weary kind of way, but I'll leave that kind of stuff for bar talk and marketing dudes. Some heavier snow was falling earlier on this morning. That had eased a little while ago, but as of 8:20am it is snowing lightly again. Is that the sun breaking through some clouds again? Confusing! Anyway, bottom line - lots of people around with exciting regular snowfall that is filling in tracks. All is good and I'm glad that Niseko is delivering for this very busy period. Hope some of you are out enjoying it. :) --- You might notice that the official snow depth for the upper part of Niseko Grand Hirafu has now bust through the 5m mark. Let's comparing: Niseko Grand Hirafu: 510cm Niseko Village: 390cm Niseko Annupuri: 390cm Why the big difference some of you ask? Well, that's best asked of the people providing such numbers - ie. not me or SnowJapan. In my humble opinion, official snow depth numbers are an interesting 'background number' looking at the season as a whole. A big base is of course great for a potentially long season: but it's always the amount of freshly fallen snow that is the much more important bit of info. You might notice that some resorts in Japan almost never change their official snow depth, over long periods when there are milder conditions and also fresh snowfall. Check out Kagura (in Yuzawa, Niigata) as a good example. That has to be one of the most unrealistically static bits of data out there! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -6℃, 15cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -7.8℃, SE5.7m/s, 20cm snowfall, no snowdrift. Annupuri1150m: -9℃, SE10m/s, 20cm snowfall. Hirafu1250m: -10℃, SE15m/s, 10cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape S7m/s, Kamui cape SE2m/s, 998hPa, 0.6m waves. Calm morning, with typical pre low-pressure snowfall since before dawn. Looking at the past 12 hours snowfall transition and test results, the snowdrifts that developed until yesterday are now mostly stable. The general avalanche risk is relatively low. Gates opening is yet to be decided. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. Many uneven layers are still present in the snowdrifts that developed in the past 4 days. Avalanches from deeper layers caused by strong stimulations, such as falling cornices, are to be highly expected. Stay away from cornice slopes and gullies even if the gates open. Many of the past avalanche accidents occurred when skiing unstable wind-loaded steep slopes during and just after stormy conditions. Today’s snow is quite better than yesterday’s. Avoid cornices and drop in from the ridges. Do not cut/traverse knolls. Stay alert as heavy low-pressure snowfall can cause loose snow avalanches in the forests. Beware of hidden cracks. The snowfall will pick up again as the low-pressure passes. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The resort is being hit by light winds at the moment and at the same time it is snowing very lightly, but little is accumulating on the ground. However yesterday post report and overnight accumulation has amounted to 8 cm, which is pretty good. The day is overcast with gray skies. It is not cold at -4°C, but adding in the windchill factor it feels pretty cold out there. Kitanomine zone open. Furano zone open . Many visitors here in Hakuba at the moment so there should be some celebrations going on this weekend. I don't know about you but I was over at Iwatake yesterday afternoon for a short time and visibility was... limited! Foggy conditions meaning there wasn't much to see out there at all. Things look clearer this morning. And here are the fresh snowfall headlines: Hakuba Goryu: reporting 2cm up top Hakuba 47: reporting 5cm Hakuba Cortina: reporting 2-3cm Hakuba Happo-one: reporting 3cm (top Gondola base) Cloudy conditions this morning but increasingly blue skies and some sunshine. It feels like it is going to clear and be a very fine day.
