The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There's just a dusting of fresh snow to report this morning here at base. Not quite 1cm, but there have been days when there's been an extra few mm, so I'm going to award the reports a mighty 1cm this morning! I am hearing reports of around 3-5cm higher up on the mountain this morning. It's colder today which is very welcome and hopefully we will see some sunshine. For now it is cloudy with some blue sky. Hopefully that rain is out of the system now and we can get on enjoying some spring skiing. And indeed, snowboarding. We need to enjoy what we have as there's not much in terms of snow potential. --- You may have noticed a very short time of downtime yesterday with the website. Actually, apparently it only lasted less than 5 minutes. But hopefully you will this morning notice that the website in general is whizzing around rather quickly and pages are loading nice and faster than before. That's because SnowJapan has moved to a brand new server that is packing a lot more muscle. I hear it is shiny too. The new hardware will let us cope with the annually increasing traffic into the coming years. At times this season there had been a bit of a 'bottleneck' early morning when large numbers of people were checking the reports, but that should not be the case now. In theory, more than triple the number of people can now access the site at exactly the same time. Hurray! A big 'otsukaresama' to all the guys involved - it's way more complex and stressful than just a case of copying a bunch of files. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6.00am: -5°, 2cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -7.3°, NW3.0m/s, 5cm new snow, inconsistent snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -8°, NW5m/s, trace new snow. Hirafu peak: -10°, light winds, 3cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNE6m/s. Kamui Cape: SE2m/s, 1021hPa, wave 1.9m. The warm low pressure system has moved of to the north east and a north west snow wind is now blowing. Snow drift and cornice development at Moiwa peak over the last 12 hours has mainly been from wind blown snow which has settled down now. The warm air and strong winds yesterday have caused irregular snow drift development. From this mornings observation, there is the possibility of surface avalanches on leeward slopes, fracturing on Mar 9th low pressure snowfall layer at about 40cm. Be careful on cornice slopes and around knolls. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice. Be prepared before going out of bounds. Snow drift conditions are not bad, however there is a wet layer below the surface which can easily catch you. Ride carefully and take constant note of snow conditions. There is high possibility of a full depth avalanche at Kozan no Sawa 1000m elev, Annupuri Osawa 1000m elev SE slope. If an avalanche occurs it will be extremely dangerous. Avoid riding in the valley bottom, this is where the avalanche will run. Guides and group leaders remember you are responsible for the safety of your group. Do not lead groups onto cornice slopes or into valley bottoms. Death cookies on the groomers in places today, take care. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 908cm Posted on Thursday 8th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . It's an overcast start today, with some light snow falling. There is a moderate wind gusting through, but due to the warm air temperature it doesn't feel particularly chilly. We are definitely beginning to press on into Spring! The pistes are grainy at the moment, due to the warm weather that we have had recently. The wind will continue to build throughout the day, with gusts of up to 40kmph at the base this evening. The air temperature is expected to continue to rise to highs of 9°C overnight tonight, and precipitation will increase in intensity throughout today, culminating in heavy rain overnight tonight. Looking forwards, the wind will drop first thing tomorrow, alongside the air temperature, allowing the rain to change to snow. Accumulations are predicted to be modest, with around 7cm at the base. Temperatures will remain below 0°C throughout Saturday, and there will continue to be light snowfall. On Sunday, we can expect the sun to be back, and air temperatures will rise to be comfortably above 0°C through until at least Tuesday. We can expect a mix of sun and cloud throughout this period, and there will be little wind. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sunny and nice today, a little fresh snow on top. A fairly cold start, too, although the sun is pretty warm and the streets are already wet. Once again we’re going to see the freezing level go up over 3000 meters, and more rain - maybe heavy down low on Friday morning. It’s still early March, though, and snow could fall again... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is good and cold this morning and I have 11cm of fresh snowfall to report to you from overnight. Hurray! Looks like the weather will be calmer today after some fairly strong winds during the afternoon yesterday. It was snowing earlier on but isn't just now as I write this. Actually, it just about is - but it's very very light and almost too difficult to see! Might we get to see some sunshine today? We might. And I will of course let you know tomorrow. Expect lifts and gates to be open this morning. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -8℃, 10cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -11.7℃, WSW5.4m/s, 15cm snowfall wit snowdrifts development. Annupuri1150m: -15℃, NW15m/s, 15cm snowfall. Hirafu peak: -15℃, W15m/s, 15cm snowfall. Benkei cape: NW12m/s, Kamui cape WNW7m/s, 1043hPa, 2.0m waves. A strong cold airflow is brought on the edge of the high-pressure system. Intermittent snowfall with 15m/s wind is persisting through the morning. Snowdrifts are slowly growing in leeward slopes. There were no notable instability observed in the snowpack around 800m elevation. The avalanche risk below treeline is low. The wind stayed relatively strong in higher elevation and the new snowdrifts (soft slabs) could easily slide from March 5th layer. Avalanche hazard is relatively high in long and wide open steep slopes. Peak gates are expected to open depending on the peak chair operation. Listen to the patrol’s instructions, be well prepared and step out from the gates. The new snow in the trees is a bit shallow, but very good for this time of the season. Glide avalanche (full depth slides) hazard is rising in upper west-ridge’s Backbowl side and Annupuri O-sawa 1100m. Glide avalanche does not necessarily occur in warm temperature and visible cracks are not the only signs to evaluate the risks. It is strongly recommended not to ride the valley bottoms in order to avoid being caught in case it slides. Thaw & freeze, the mountain is slowly shifting to Spring. Today’s still like winter. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . When I got up earlier this morning it was snowing but right now there's some sun shining through the remaining clouds over in Kumanoyu. But I just came back from there to here in Hasuike which is enveloped in thick fog just now. So variable conditions at the moment depending where you are in the Shiga Kogen area. Whatever, much nicer than the miserable wet of yesterday, for sure. This early spring is serving up some rather unpredictable conditions. I'm no forecaster, I'll just let you check out the forecast yourself and we can all guess together! (See blue button above). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have some fresh snow to report but just 1cm of it. It is snowing very lightly (indeed) as I put this report together and it is keeping pretty cold which is of course a good thing. Keeping cold will be good as it doesn't look like we should expect much snow over the next few days. I would be more than happy for that to be wrong. It looks like the Hirafu Gondola is having some issues at the start of the day. --- One thing I would like to point out once again. My snow measurements come from close to Niseko Grand Hirafu base and are done by myself (and sponsored by - or should I say fuel(l)ed by - toast). There is often more snowfall higher up on the mountain than at base. In early and late season in particular, this can easily mean the difference between no snow on the ground here at base and snowfall delivered to the mountain. Having said that, today the Avalanche report is not reporting more than trace at each of their points. I'll comment on it when I feel there is going to be any notable difference on a given day. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6.00am: -8°, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: -10.1°, W8.6m/s(overnight 17m/s), trace new snow, cornice development. Annupuri 1150m: -14°, NW15m/s snow wind, trace new snow, poor visibility. Hirafu peak: -13°, snow wind, trace new snow, poor visibility. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: N9m/s. Kamui Cape: WNW7m/s, 1020hPa, wave 1.5m. The barometric pressure gradient has steepened and a strong westerly wind blew overnight. Only a small amount of snow has fallen however new cornice development from wind blown snow is collapsing easily. In the past in similar conditions 3 high school students were buried by an avalanche caused by a cornice collapsing in Mikaeri Bowl. Take care on cornice slopes above 800m. An avalanche happens when conditions are right regardless of the amount of snow and only becomes an accident if people are involved. Overall the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Follow the patrol's decisions. To avoid getting caught in a full depth avalanche you should reconsider your habit of riding in the valley bottoms. On the south east side of Annupuri where there are steep slopes with large elevation changes, full depth avalanches can have a major impact on the topography and vegetation. Large avalanches like these have come down onto the forest road in the past. From the snowfall this winter strict precautions are needed for spring. Spring is here now with these freeze/thaw cycles. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The whole resort was a whiteout yesterday with severe winds throughout the day. The double good news is that there is another 25cm of snow at village level and the storm has passed. The gondola is moving, so that should be good to go at the official opening time of 9am. It is warm again, just below zero at the moment and will head up to +2c today. The weather is mainly cloud but plenty of sun is coming through. It will be a good day with lots of fresh snow. Early lifts will be a must do. Kitanomine Zone open. Furano Zone open. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Oh dear, I'm a bit late this morning aren't I? Gomenasai! OK so I'll try to get this up as quickly as possible. 14cm of fresh snowfall and happily the worst of that storm has now passed... though it's still quite windy and top lifts are not open at the moment (see below for resort specifics). I reckon there'll be more snow in places, but less in others too so variable conditions. Let me add I have not been out there to check on that yet. It's mild today and tomorrow milder still. Happily, it won't be as warm as some places to the south of us look set to be. (Yikes!) --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -3℃, 20cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -6.4℃, SW7.5m/s, large snowdrift development. Annupuri1150m: -9℃, SW15m/s, cornice and snowdrifts development. Hirafu1250m: -10℃, strong NW wind with snowdrifts developing. Benkei cape: WNW16m/s, Kamui cape SW16m/s, 1010hPa, 2.9m waves. The storm has passed, however the development of the snowdrifts has been drastic in the past 24hours. The course and chair-lift maintenance will take longer than usual. So much snow deposit that the terrain has changed in some areas. The snowpack is starting to stabilize, but 2 uneven bonding and one deeper weak layer (Mar 1st low pressure snow) has been observed in the morning pressure test. The snowpack is relatively stable, however if a slide happens, it could be in a very large scale. The avalanche risk in areas above 800m is high. Gates opening is undetermined, please respect the patrol’s decision. Avalanches caused by collapsing snowdrifts that developed thick during strong storms are the most terrifying. Many of the accidents occur during and just after storms and most of then could be avoided if all mountain-goers were paying more attention to the recent weather transition. An avalanche experiment will be undertaken at Mikaeri Bowl this morning. A large slide is expected to occur, please stay away from Moiwa bowl and Mikaeri area. The snow in the trees is dense, but in good condition. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. It's snowing again! Nice to see fresh snow after the, er, generally less than nice weather yesterday. Not a huge amount the resort is reporting 5cm and I can add 4cm to my reports. It looks like most of the tree run courses are closed this morning, according to the official website at the time of this report going up. Come tomorrow, the weather should be much more settled. And as we have been seeing on the forecast this week --- warm. Temperatures may well rise into double digits especially come Sunday. Oh yes, and back to cold early next week. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from a very blustery Naeba! The air temperature is reading -5°C, but there is a strong wind accompanied by blowing snow meaning that the wind chill will be significant today. The accumulation of new snow is a difficult figure to report, as with this wind, the snow is falling in all directions and being blown about after deposition. Many lifts are on standby due to the wind, with just the chairlifts at the bottom open currently. The wind will hopefully ease off into this afternoon, however it isn't expected to fully blow out of the valley until tonight. Air temperatures are predicted to stay below 0°C throughout today and overnight tonight. The pistes will have windblown fresh snow, which will be accumulating far quicker on the leeward (southern) faces. Looking forwards, the forecast is still very changeable. Tomorrow is predicted to be a sunny, clear and calm day, with air temperatures somewhat above 0°C. Sunday is predicted to be rather anomalous, with air temperatures pushing up even higher, to 13°C in the daytime at the base. There will be little wind to cool down the 'feels like' temperature, and the sun is forecast to be blazing down on us. On Monday, the warmer temperatures continue, accompanied by some rain in the afternoon, which turns to snow as temperatures finally drop on Monday night. The amount of snow forecast is changing regularly, so we will have to wait and see what is in store for us closer to the time.
