  • Zao Now: Monday 21st January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 313cm Posted on Monday 21st January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Brrrrr, it really does feel very cold outside this morning. The week is looking promising for regular and sometimes heavy snowfall. We might well have to put up with some strong winds though... and the top Zao Ropeway section will likely be affected during the day. Fresh snowfall is always good. Zao never is prone to report big snow depth numbers (even when they surely could - always seems to be on the conservative side), but we could still do with a week or so of prolonged and steady snow delivery. • Furano Now: Monday 21st January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 385cm Posted on Monday 21st January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is snowing light to moderately at the moment and there is 10cm of new snow in the Kitanomine village. Unfortunately the wind is very strong, but should reduce somewhat during the day. It is possible that the wind may affect the operation of Kitanomine Gondola, although it is too early to know that for sure. There is low cloud on the resort and that combined with the wind whipping up the snow means visibility will be limited. Light snow is forecast for tomorrow, and then a heavy snowfall is predicted for Wednesday night. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 312cm Posted on Monday 21st January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning all and welcome to the new week. It starts in good style with some good freshly fallen snow on the ground and suitably cold conditions. This morning Yakebitaiyama resort area is reporting about 30cm of fresh snowfall while Kumanoyu (who often report smaller numbers) are saying 10cm. I myself have just measured 16cm but overnight it sounded rather windy so there's that windswept thing going on in places. Forecasts show regular snow for large parts of this week - light at times, heavy at times. All good. Especially the latter! I'm all revved up to go and seek out that 30cm of fresh that Yakebi are reporting! • Niseko Now: Monday 21st January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 26cm Snowfall at base this season 623cm Posted on Monday 21st January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Morning to you all. And what an interesting one it is. There has been some noisy winds blowing around and being naughty, it's very cold, there's lots of fresh snow around and that wind has really been mixing it all up. It's all just a bit on the wilder side! I am measuring 26cm of fresh snowfall, but there will be places where there is more than that and indeed places where there is less. These conditions are going to be affecting lift operations for the day, and as of opening times all of the top lifts are on hold as well as the Annupuri and the main Niseko Village gondola and a few some more. The day is starting off with lower to mid-mountain open. Hopefully by later on it might get calmer and tomorrow certainly should be. Once the storm clears though... oh my, it's going to be very good! :) I bet Santa wishes he was still here. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -10°, 35cm new snow in last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -11.8°, W11.3m/s, cornice and snowdrift development, blizzard, poor visibility. Mikaeri Weather Station: poor visibility. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 190cm. Hirafu Peak: -16°, blizzard, poor visibility. Mizuno no Sawa: -13.5°, strong NW snow wind, snowdrift development. Kutchan Weather Station: -7.6°, snow depth 146cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW18m/s. Kamui Cape: WNW16m/s, 1001hPa, wave 4.5m. Isobars have moved closer together bringing blizzard conditions and heavy snowfall. Snowdrifts have formed even at the mountain base, visibility is bad. From observation at 800m, there has been over 100cm snowdrift growth and major cornice development in the last 12 hrs. There is possibility of surface avalanche on leeward cornice slopes and knolls around 800m, fracturing at over 60cm depth on the Jan 20th layer of pre low pressure snowfall. Jan 20th layer has formed frost layer by temperature gradient. From all data avalanche risk is high. All peak gates are expected to be closed. Please follow the patrols instructions. Be patient and only ride the sides of the runs today. Even if the wind drops and upper lifts start running the avalanche danger will continue. Do not duck ropes, never enter Yuno Sawa or Haru no taki. Snow is deep and good in the trees. Be careful hitting trees and getting stuck. Maybe tomorrow we can ride the good stuff again. Good to see some snow starting for fall from early this morning with a few cm which should be the start of something good. Kind of feels mild though. Still, the forecast is looking very positive for some decent snow over the coming days. Let's hope it happens as we could be doing with some deep fresh out there. • Niseko Now: Sunday 20th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 597cm Posted on Sunday 20th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have measured just a few cm of snow this morning. Still expecting more snow with bigger numbers. Hopefully starting later on today and reflected in my report tomorrow. Not much of a wind this morning and so all resorts should be open as planned. Someone asked about gates and how to find out if they are open or not in a morning. Alas, the best early morning info is included in the Avalanche Report, but that is often along the lines of 'the gates may open' especially when conditions are unclear and so it is not particularly definitive. Often because decisions have not been made at the time of writing. The resorts themselves don't talk about these things on their websites. The best way to find out the latest info without actually physically going there is to phone the resorts and ask them, see if they answer. Usually it is the top gates that are the most likely to be not opening. But... weather conditions, etc. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -7.2°, W3.4m/s, no snow drift development calm. Mikaeri Weather Station: -8°, no cornice or snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 190cm. Hirafu Peak: -10°. Mizuno no Sawa: -8.62°, W3.5m/s. Kutchan Weather Station: -6.7°, snow depth 124cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW5m/s. Kamui Cape: SW4m/s, 1009hPa, wave 1.2m. We are currently under a low pressure system with little pressure gradient. The sea and mountain are calm and there is no new snowfall. The snow has stabilised and the general avalanche risk is low. Even though over 1000 people went out of bounds yesterday, tracked up the whole mountain, we can be thankful there were no accidents. Never enter strictly off limits areas looking for fresh tracks. One set of tracks will led others to follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Niseko Rules secure your freedom to ride out of bounds. Avalanches are not the only danger in the mountains. Do not over estimate your skills or knowledge. Always be cautious. With care most accidents can be avoided. Be aware of a sudden change in weather. The morning groomers are in good shape, but be careful taking a spill at speed. Helmets are recommended. That is forecast to ease up during the day today and perhaps a similar picture coming up for tomorrow. Both Gondolas should be up and running for the weekend. And... ALL of the tree run courses are open! • Madarao Now: Saturday 19th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 444cm Weather overview Sunny Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Excellent Posted on Saturday 19th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. A bit of left-overs since my last report (and no fresh overnight) but this morning there are lovely blue skies above our mountain as the weekend gets started. It's due to be a relatively mild weekend (cold start) and before the snow comes back from tomorrow there might even be some drops of rain, but lets hope we can avoid that. Should last long anyway as we are set to see some good snow into Monday and beyond in the coming week. The forecast is looking nice and juicy (hopefully in a nice and light kind of way!) Nighta tonight!
