It was snowing for the morning yesterday easing off in the afternoon and then back to snow again overnight. Light wind early this morning but light snow is still falling. Perhaps we might get some clearer skies again later on in the day and tomorrow the forecast is currently for cloud and fine at times. With the snow of the last few days conditions should be excellent for the weekend. (Though perhaps keep an eye on Sunday as it is forecast to be a little milder and there is a chance of rain. Lets hope we can avoid that). For now though, should be an excellent morning. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here As expected, some pretty wild conditions up here at the moment. Top lifts and some others were affected by the blizzard conditions yesterday. It is one of those days when it’s a bit muzukashii to measure exactly how much snow has fallen, with the wind blowing it about and all. In the name of science I have taken a few different measurements today to try and be as fair and representative as possible and I hereby declare my fresh snowfall number for the day as 16cm. I am guessing that there will be considerably more than that in some places. It is cold this morning and the snow quality seems super light and dry. Just what we like. Wind persists and all top lifts are on hold again at the start of the day, as are the Niseko Gondola and Annupuri Gondola. Hirafu Gondola is moving. Be excited but also please be sure to be extra safe out there in these conditions. Personally, with regular snow still on the forecast for the coming week (maybe a bit of a break tomorrow), I think I am going to sit this one out and perhaps make myself some delicious hamberders. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -10℃, 20cm snowfall in 24 hours, snowdrifts developments. Moiwa 800m: -12.1℃, W10m/s, cornices and snowdrifts developing. Mikaeri junction: -12℃, stormy and poor visibility, dense snowdrifts developing and heavy snowfall. Hirafu peak: -16℃, stormy and whiteout. Mizuno no sawa: 16cm snowfall in 24hours, NW15.7m/s, 133cm snow depth. Benkei cape: NNW17m/s, Kamui cape: WNW11m/s, 1007hPa, 3.7m waves. Kutchan weather station: -7.9℃, 135cm snow depth. A 15-20m/s storm has persisted, making cornices and snowdrifts develop drastically. Snowdrifts up to 150+cm have formed in 24hours, they’re dense and very unstable. An uneven hoar formation due to the changing wind’s speed and direction is present in the upper 50cm of this new layer and are very likely to crush and trigger a slide. The stabilization of the cornices and snowdrifts is slow due to the strong wind. 100cm thick surface slab avalanches from Jan 15th layer are expected in knolls and slopes under cornice. Avalanche hazard is very high in slopes under cornices, knolls and open leeward steep slopes above 800m. Cornice slopes around 900m elevation in O-sawa and 800m Moiwa bowl is very risky. Do not attempt to approach those slopes even if the chairs are running. There’s dense but good snow in the tree runs. Do not duck ropes to seek fresh lines. One track under the rope will lead many others to follow it and increase the chances of accidents. Stay away from valley bottoms. Beware of frostbites. It’s recommended to finish off riding early and chill at an onsen today. There isn't much to report since my report yesterday but hopefully we are entering another stretch of snowy weather conditions that will deliver - perhaps Saturday aside - with heavy snow due around Sunday and early in the week. The official snow depths are still keeping pretty low. We could be doing with some heavy and consistent snow to get those numbers and excitement levels up. Light snow continued after my report yesterday, but not too much on the ground in terms of cm and resorts do not seem to be reporting it. A fine early morning with the sun shining through my window, but snow is actually forecast again, so will likely be clouding over sometime during the day. Looking at the current forecasts, Sunday and Tuesday look to be showing the most potential for decent amounts of fresh snow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I am kind of confused a bit this morning because I thought we were expecting snow today. Just rewind a bit and there was snow during the day yesterday. Not masses of it but a fresh layer and the resort reporting 10-17cm in total with no further snowfall overnight. A cold start but that cold should ease off this morning, hopefully not rising above zero. The forecast still shows some decent snow into tomorrow and then around Sunday and early in the week so we should be enjoying regular top-ups. For the moment, its a cracking morning. Strong winds prevented the gondola and quad lift to be closed for the day with just the pair lift operating. Snow returned again from around 9pm and this morning there is another 13cm of new snow on the ground to keep us nice and fresh.. Just a slight wind this morning and light snow falling early on but generally cloudy conditions is forecast for the day and tomorrow too. Conditions should be very good this morning. I know where I am heading! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Lots of lovely fresh snow to report this morning. Oh yes. I am measuring 23cm of it here around my secret base lair and as always we can expect more than that up on the mountain. Whether we will be able to get up there today and enjoy all that goodness due to winds affecting lift operations - well, that remains to be seen. And I am feeling not likely. At the start of the day and as I post this at 8:30am, some lifts are already affected by wind and it is forecast to get even more frisky during the day. All of the top lifts are not planned to open as normal. Hirafu Gondola is starting up but the Gondolas at Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri are now. Expect possible additional stoppages. Doh! Conditions should be great everywhere this morning so there is still lots to enjoy. It feels very cold this morning so I recommend some extra toast and getting wrapped up well and ready to jump into that fresh snow early on. Be aware and take care. --- Lifts that are on hold at the start of the day due to wind conditions - Annupuri Gondola - Annupuri Jumbo 4 top lift - Niseko Gondola - Wonderland Chair top lift - Ace Number 4 pair - King Number 2 quad - Hanazono top quad --- Why do the official snow depth numbers hardly change, even when there is fresh snow? My quick total cop-out answer is... ask the ski resorts! But seriously. There are lots of reasons and the reasons will unfortunately likely vary depending on the ski resort and the way they go about reporting --- and let me be clear that I can only speak with some experience of Japanese ski resorts. Snow gets compacted naturally, it changes over time. And it gets groomed. And it melts.... I would naturally expect more slight adjustments every day, but that just does not seem to happen. I would just not take too much notice of the official snow depth numbers. They are number that are nice to have as a record and to compare between seasons, but in themselves they don’t really mean much. The fresh snowfall number that I measure and record every morning is a much more meaningful number to concentrate on and get nerdy about. :) That’s what I think anyway. Feel free to disagree! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -7℃, 25cm snowfall in 24 hours. Moiwa 800m: -9.6℃, W5.7n/s, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 185cm (Jan 16th). Mizuno no sawa: 13cm snowfall in 12 hours, 130cm snow depth. Hirafu peak: -14℃, W10m/s, snowdrift development. Kutchan weather station: -6.2℃, 130cm snow depth. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NW19m/s, Kamui cape W16m/s, 1002hPa, 2.4m waves. Large and uneven snowdrift developments. If the storm picks up today, avalanches from those uneven developments and weak bonding of snow within the Jan 16th-17th snowdrifts are highly likely to occur in knoll and cornice terrains above 800m elevation. If it slides from the Jan 15th weak layer, the crown could be up to 100cm thick and extremely dangerous. Avalanche hazard is high today. Gates opening is undetermined, please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. There’s plenty of snow inbounds today. Respect the Rules and have a safe day. Beware of frostbites. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a bit drab looking outside compared to the beautiful clear days earlier in the week. There is low cloud cover this morning. It has been snowing overnight and the accumulation is an impressive 15cm. That new snow however is wet and pretty heavy compared to what normally falls at this time of year. The snow has stopped for now but light snow is forecast during the day. The wind is moderate and it will be reasonably windy through until Friday. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The snow is back. Not huge amounts but it is a start on the road back to a fresh reset and I can report just over 5cm; there should be more than that at higher elevations. Snow is falling and there is limited visibility up there too but all seems open as planned this morning. We might enjoy some clearer conditions and blue skies this afternoon. More snow is forecast for tomorrow along with stronger winds and then again around Sunday. Just how much we will get... we will have to sit tight and see what happens.
