The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have measured just a few cm of snow this morning. Still expecting more snow with bigger numbers. Hopefully starting later on today and reflected in my report tomorrow. Not much of a wind this morning and so all resorts should be open as planned. Someone asked about gates and how to find out if they are open or not in a morning. Alas, the best early morning info is included in the Avalanche Report, but that is often along the lines of 'the gates may open' especially when conditions are unclear and so it is not particularly definitive. Often because decisions have not been made at the time of writing. The resorts themselves don't talk about these things on their websites. The best way to find out the latest info without actually physically going there is to phone the resorts and ask them, see if they answer. Usually it is the top gates that are the most likely to be not opening. But... weather conditions, etc. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -7.2°, W3.4m/s, no snow drift development calm. Mikaeri Weather Station: -8°, no cornice or snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 190cm. Hirafu Peak: -10°. Mizuno no Sawa: -8.62°, W3.5m/s. Kutchan Weather Station: -6.7°, snow depth 124cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW5m/s. Kamui Cape: SW4m/s, 1009hPa, wave 1.2m. We are currently under a low pressure system with little pressure gradient. The sea and mountain are calm and there is no new snowfall. The snow has stabilised and the general avalanche risk is low. Even though over 1000 people went out of bounds yesterday, tracked up the whole mountain, we can be thankful there were no accidents. Never enter strictly off limits areas looking for fresh tracks. One set of tracks will led others to follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Niseko Rules secure your freedom to ride out of bounds. Avalanches are not the only danger in the mountains. Do not over estimate your skills or knowledge. Always be cautious. With care most accidents can be avoided. Be aware of a sudden change in weather. The morning groomers are in good shape, but be careful taking a spill at speed. Helmets are recommended. The quad lift and A6 course were closed due to poor visibility for part of the day though. Light snow overnight gives us another 6cm of snow on the ground this morning and light snow has been falling early on with just a light wind. That is forecast to ease up during the day today and perhaps a similar picture coming up for tomorrow. Both Gondolas should be up and running for the weekend. And... There is more wind than I thought there would be today, in fact it is blowing very strongly. This may interfere with operation of the Kitanomine Gondola. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I think I have caught something from my Hakuba Now reporting friend. Bad cold, bad condition, groggy. But... this morning the slopes of Nozawa should be in fine shape with more snow since yesterday and what looks like clearing clouds. The forecast is looking very nice at the moment with lots of regular snowfall - heavy at times - starting from tomorrow night, but don't be too shocked to see some rain down in the village before that clicks in. Fingers crossed we avoid that, but there is a chance of that. For now though, all good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I think sitting out yesterday was a good idea, though while lift operations were limited a friend of mine came back very happy with his day of adventure in the snow. Perhaps I am getting a bit old! This morning I have 9cm to report to you here at base and it looks like all lifts should be open as planned from the start of the day. No doubt there will be a rush to the untouched snow on the upper mountain. Things should be pretty fab this morning. I will leave more scientific sounding stuff about the snow to the Avalanche report below. Take special care while you have your excite fun! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -6.5℃, 5cm snowfall in 12hours, 25cm in 24hours, calm. Moiwa800m: -8.8℃, W3.6m/s, calm, cornices and snowdrifts have largely developed in 24 hours, mostly in the first 12. Mikaeri junction: snow depth 250cm, snowdrifts developments. Annupuri1120m: 190cm snow depth on the 18th, max wind speed 21m/s at 1pm, -11℃. Mizuno no sawa: -10.71℃, WSW2.4m/s, 5cm snowfall in the past 12 hours, 15cm in 24hours. Hirafu peak: -12℃, W10m/s, even development of snowdrifts. Kutchan weather station: -6.2℃, snow depth 129cm. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NW9m/s, Kamui cape: W5m/s, 1016hPa, 2.4m waves. The wind has calmed down and the cornices/snowdrifts developments that persisted the past 48hours have settled. The snowpack’s consolidation has stabilized and the avalanche risk below 1000m elevation is lowering, however hazard level remains high in slopes around cornices above 1000m in O-sawa and Backbowl. All gates are scheduled to open. Do not traverse under cornices and do not ride the bottom of the valleys. The out of bounds area may not be controlled or managed, but the ski resort and the community care about the visitors’ safety. Please ask the ski patrol some advices before stepping out of the gates. Perhaps due to ease off somewhat later and tomorrow, but there is more on them there forecasts for Sunday and then again Tuesday Wednesday. So the potential for regular fresh is looking good. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Stormy conditions here in Zao with snow falling, quite strong westerly winds blowing and some very limited visibility out there. It is also very cold. Difficult to measure snow in these conditions with more and less in places depending on where you look. Tomorrow morning we might get some sunshine but come Sunday we are forecast a return to fresh snowfall through into at least mid week. All lifts apart from Karamatsu and Yokokura 2 appear to be operating. Tomorrow should be a lot calmer in respect to the wind and in the morning we should see some sun, then progressing to cloud in the afternoon.
