  • Shiga Kogen Now: Saturday 2nd February 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 504cm Posted on Saturday 2nd February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Cloudy at the beginning of the day but it has been improving and like neighbouring regions we are seeing increasing clearer skies and sunshine - perhaps we'll more of it as the day goes on. Definitely much calmer. No fresh snow being reported by resorts. But I measured some - since my report yesterday, so that is what is recorded here. (Why do ski resorts here seem to just ignore snow that falls in the daytime. An ongoing frustration; let's move on!) OK so, tomorrow. Sunshine. That's nice. Warmer conditions. Not so. Some forecasts have some rain even up here in Shiga Kogen. I am hoping we will avoid that. The good news in all that is that it should be snowing once again early in the week. So generally fine weather due during the day today and tomorrow. Hope some of you can enjoy it. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 326cm Posted on Saturday 2nd February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. This morning the fresh snow news is less in the north with Cortina just reporting 1cm and Happo, 47 and Goryu all reporting between 5-10cm of fresh snow on the mountain. Not huge numbers of course but better than none as the weekend begins and the car parks quickly fill up. We're expecting clearing clouds today and fairly mild conditions. There is still a lot of cloud around the mountains but it's clearer in some places. Probably a beautiful clear morning tomorrow. It's still looking likely to be unseasonably warm (around 7C in village) with rain later in the day into Monday. Colder and back to snow please. (Please repeat many times). In the meantime should be a good morning. Looking busy out there. Take care and have fun. • Niseko Now: Saturday 2nd February 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 730cm Posted on Saturday 2nd February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Oh dear. It's still very cold, windy and blizzard-like conditions here this morning. It's not letting up yet! Just lower lifts are opening at the start of the day - 3 lifts at Hirafu, 5 lifts at Village, and 1 lift at both Annupuri and Hanazono are starting up. Another 7cm of snowfall measured but that wind has been blowing it around and it's not exactly coming down straight either. So it is one of those days when you wonder just how much has fallen. Can't do more than just measure it though in the meantime! Visibility is better this morning and while there is still a lot of cloud about, there is actually a bit of blue sky on show too. Tomorrow should be calmer and we'll see some milder temps before dropping again around Monday and more snow moving in. --- Real danger awaits in these conditions. Do be sensible and careful. And see you tomorrow. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -9°, 5cm new snow in the last 12 hrs, strong wind and snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -11.3, N18m/s, continued cornice and snowdrift development . Mikaeri Weather Station: -11°, 150cm snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: snow depth 215cm. Hirafu Ridgeline: -15°, N15m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -12.79°, 8cm new snow in last 24hrs, snow depth 160cm. WNW9.9m/s.(max21.1m/s 5.30am). Suttsu Weather Station: -3.8°, NNW21.5m/s, snow depth 47cm. Kutchan Weather Station: -6.9°, WNW9.9m/s, snow depth 162cm. Blizzard conditions at mountain base. Above 800m there is major snowdrift and cornice development from the strong winds. Tests show delayed snow drift stabilisation and cornices are easily collapsing. On SE faces around 1000m there is a risk of cornice collapse triggering surface avalanches around 100cm depth. Predicted fracture layer is Jan 30 frost layer. Even if the wind drops and lifts are able to run, do not go into Osawa or Kozan no Sawa valley bottoms. Also on the surrounding mountains take care on leeward snowdrift slopes, even below the treeline. Snow in trees is heavy, wind packed and a challenge. Be careful hitting a tree. Expect easily occurring avalanches in the steep gulleys in Moiwa Anbetsu area. Don’t follow tracks that you don’t know where they are going. Most accidents happen during or directly after blizzards. Even if the weather comes good, stay out of the valley bottoms. Always be cautious. --- Ski resort operation information: Saturday 2nd February 2019 Subject to change due to weather conditions Niseko Grand Hirafu Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 330cm - Base: 120cm Ski lifts operating: - Just three base lifts operating at the start of the day - The Ace Family quad (until 8:30pm), Ace Center 4 quad (8:20pm), Hirafu Gondola (until 8:10pm) and Holiday Number 1 pair (until 8:30pm) lifts are normally open during the evening ----- Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 245cm - Base: 190cm Ski lifts operating: - Just the base lift operating at the start of the day - The Hanazono lifts are normally open until 3:50pm (Number 3 until 3:30pm) ----- Niseko Annupuri Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 290cm - Base: 150cm Ski lifts operating: - Just the base Dream quad lift operating at the start of the day - The Jumbo 1 lift is normally open until 8:30pm during the evening ----- Niseko Village Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 290cm - Base: 160cm Ski lifts operating: - Upper Village Gondola, Village Express, Community Chair, Banzai and Morino operating at the start of the day - The Upper Village Gondola, Village Express and Banzai Chair lifts are normally open until 8:00pm during the evening Niseko Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Saturday 2nd February 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 730cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 61 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 32cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 84cm reported on 8 days December 2018 snowfall 333cm reported on 26 days January 2019 snowfall 285cm reported on 25 days February 2019 snowfall 28cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning all! Some lovely flakes of snow falling this morning. And while the resort is reporting 20cm, I am measuring 27cm. And counting. It's due for the day, perhaps less so this afternoon. Limited visibility though so there's not much to see other than those lovely flakes falling against a grey/silver kind of soupy background. It's a very cold morning too with a moderate northerly blowing around. Calmer and clearer tomorrow? And rather warm due on Sunday. With the fresh from today, if you are choosing one of the weekend days, I'd go with Saturday. Hope you come to enjoy it. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Nozawa. Some fresh snow to report to start February off. The resort reports 25cm of fresh on the top Yamabiko area with 10-15cm on lower areas. It's a cold start to the morning too with decent visibility in most areas, bit limited on the top. Snow forecast for today, easing off as the afternoon goes on. OK so how's the forecast for the weekend shaping up? Well, currently it seems we can probably expect some cloud/sun tomorrow and then a warming up with temps nudging up a bit too high for comfort on Sunday. But hopefully it will be short lived and we'll be back to cold come Monday. And while we might get more snow on Monday, we should expect some rain before the snow. So I would say that the pick of the weekend is going to be Saturday... Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 498cm Posted on Friday 1st February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. Blowing winds and snow on this very cold morning. It's affecting some lifts early on and certainly not the kindest of conditions to be outside. We're gnarlier than that though aren't we? ;) I am measuring 14cm of fresh snow and I note that the Yakebitaiyama resort are are reporting about 20cm and Kumanoyu just 5cm. Regional variances as well as a bit of wind mixed into there explaining that I think. But it is coming down nicely now so there's more on the way during the day today. The weekend is set to be calmer, clearer and brighter. And warmer too, particularly on Sunday. We're high up here in Shiga Kogen and so avoid warm ups too much - still keeping fairly cold up here. Let us hope that is the case on Sunday because it looks like it's going to be borderline toasty down in the valleys. Some more snow to report to you this morning though differing numbers, the northern Cortina reporting 20cm with Goryu and Happo reporting 3-5cm and 47 reporting 5-10cm. Sounds like the northern areas got a bit more of it this morning. Hakuba Cortina: 20cm Hakuba 47: 5-10cm Hakuba Goryu: 3-5cm Hakuba Happo-one: 3cm (top of Riesen) It is good and cold this morning so conditions should be good out there. There's some breaks in the cloud too so visibility is good and there's some dramatic views. OK so looking towards the weekend. Some sun tomorrow perhaps and then there's that worryingly warm (and hopefully short) blip that is due on Sunday/Monday. Which might bring some rubbish rain but end up bringing smiles to our faces with snow on Monday. It's going to be interesting to see what happens with that lot. • Naeba Now: Friday 1st February 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 639cm Posted on Friday 1st February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Morning from Naeba. Bit of disruption this morning. Firstly the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed, so the Dragondola is also. As well as that poor weather conditions are preventing the Number 2 Gondola from moving so the upper area of the mountain is closed.
