The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. Fine in the morning with clouds in the afternoon is how things ended up yesterday. Hakuba 47 were reporting 'mizore' (sleet), I experienced something a bit wetter than that. But this morning it is noticeably colder and there is some fresh snow to report. Here is what the ski resorts are reporting: Hakuba Cortina: 0-cm (base); 10-cm (top) Hakuba Happo-one: 5cm (top of Riesen) Hakuba 47: 5cm Hakuba Goryu: 2cm (Toomi); 10cm (top) Lots of cloud still and snow falling in places, though there's actually some small bits of blue sky showing through in places - so it's a case of varying current conditions depending on where you are in the valley. Some forecasts look good for tomorrow night, others seem less excited about the chance of snow. As we can't do much about it, let's just enjoy what we have and see what happens (as they say). Long weekend ahead, as Monday is 'National Foundation Day' and a national holiday. It's usually one of the most popular and busy weekends of the winter season. It is a nice calm morning and there is plenty of early morning action around the village with people heading off on day trips to ski the other great mountains nearby. There is 5cm of new snow on the ground and with all the snow recently the conditions on and off piste are great. There is some high cloud but also big clear breaks, which should make for a pleasant morning at least. Temperatures are colder today and shouldn't go much higher than -6c during the day. I'm really not feeling very well this morning, so forgive my short report. 4cm of snow measured, light snow and light wind; and cold conditions with regular snow there on the forecast. Hopefully back to normal tomorrow morning. Bye! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -8℃, 1cm snowfall in 12h, calm morning. Moiwa800m: -10.9℃, W2.9m/s, moderate snowdrift development overnight with slight snowfall. Mikaeri CAT track has been groomed. Annupuri11120m: 230cm snow depth, calm. Mizuno no sawa: -11.97℃, NW1.7m/s, 3cm snowfall in 12h, 158cm snowpack at the base. Suttsu weather station: -4.9℃, 53cm snow depth. Kutchan: -7.6℃, 164cm snow depth. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: N6m/s, Kamui cape: NNW6m/s, 1012hPa, 0.7m waves. The isobars are spaced out and the weather is calm at the ocean and the mountains. According to observations, some shallow surface slab slides are still considerable, however the overall avalanche hazard level is low. All gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions and be well aware and prepared before stepping out of the gates. The mountain is tracked out, beware of bumps. Do not enter the strictly off-limits areas to find fresh tracks. One track under the rope would lead many others to follow it. Please conform to the Niseko Rules in order to prevent tragic accidents. Most accidents occur during poor weather. When the resort gates are closed, the surrounding mountains are also in hazardous conditions. Many cases of accidents have been reported when resort gates are closed. Tour guides and group leaders are greatly responsible for their party’s safety, be sure not to underestimate the hazards of winter mountains. Mountain guides are not bus guides, just knowing the way back does not qualify them as a good guide. Since my report yesterday morning, cloudy and some breaks in the cloud at times with a light wind and all of the lifts moving as normal. This morning it's fine with some thin cloud around and that is pretty much what the forecast tells us to expect. And similarly for tomorrow too (with the chance of some snow overnight into Friday). So a settled kind of feeling going on at the moment. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Spring? Nope, not up here! It's still mid-winter here and it looks set to continue. Temperatures remain down cold and after some good snowfall from the afternoon yesterday there's almost 20cm of fine quality fresh light snowfall to add to my reports. All lifts appear to be preparing for a busy day. Gambatte! And, Otsukaresama, etc. The forecast is looking good for regular snowfall along with wintery cold conditions over the coming week. All is good. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -7℃, 15cm snowfall in 12 hours, calm weather overnight. Moiwa800m: -8.6℃, N0.7m/s, 20cm snowfall in 12hours, no snowdrift development. Mikaeri Junction: calm, -9℃, small snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: 220cm snow depth. Hirafu peak: -13℃, 20cm snowfall, snowdrifts developments and calm. Misuno no sawa: -9.99℃, calm, 165cm snow depth at mountain base, 6cm snowfall in 12 hours. Suttsu weather station: -3.4℃, calm wind, 47cm snow depth, Kutchan -7.1℃, calm wind, 163cm snow depth. Coastal data Benkei cape ENE4m/s, Kamui cape NNE2m/s, 1012hPa, 1.2m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the weather is calm in the mountain and on the ocean. The snowfall settled down around noon yesterday, but another set came in and dropped 15cm of fresh snow in 3h. There were no wind influence during that snowfall and the new snow is not forming notable slabs. The overall avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. Do not cut across slopes under cornices and knolls. Traversing over and over on the same slope could stimulate deeper weak layers and trigger a slide. Special caution is required in O-sawa (Annupuri bowl) and Kozan no sawa (Back bowl). We would like to repeatedly remind that it is strongly advised not to ride the bottom of the valleys. Hazards of slides striking from higher slopes are ever-present. Do not party ride in suspicious terrains. One slide could take in the whole group. The snow condition is excellent today. Ducking ropes is strictly prohibited in Niseko. Please show respect to the local customs. They may be different from your country, but as the proverb says, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do." The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Yesterday was characterized by strong winds throughout the day. There were many times during the day when so much snow was being whipped around that visibility in the village was at a minimum when walking or driving around. The good news this morning is that those winds have passed. There is 5cm of new snow at base and significantly more higher up, although it will be wind affected. The gondola didn't operate yesterday, so it will be powder heaven for the first couple of hours this morning. There is a dusting of snow to report (the resort reporting 2cm up top!) At the moment the sun is out but there is still a lot of cloud around. If the forecast is right, it'll clear up during the day but shouldn't be warming up too much. Kind of more of the same tomorrow, perhaps a little milder; and then back to snow from Thursday. There's been a fair amount of melt with the weather the last few days and snow conditions aren't going to be the best at the moment. We'll need another fresh delivery to get us back to fluffy powder. Still, there is of course a lot of snow around and it doesn't need to be perfect to have a great day on the slopes.
