Things are of course quieter this morning but we have some fresh snow to play in. Bit windy overnight and that perhaps explains why Kumanoyu are reporting 5cm of snowfall and Yakebitaiyama are reporting 20cm. Perhaps somewhere in the middle of that is a fair representation of how me we have got. (I have measured 12cm). Less windy now and even some breaks in the clouds though it is still snowing here in Maruike. Not quite as cold though it is still well under zero. And long may it stay there! The forecasts show the chance of snow over the next few days so fingers crossed we'll get some more cm building up. The below information is manually checked for each report. It doesn't feel quite as cold this morning (still cold though) and we're back to snow falling from the skies and 20+cm on the ground. Visibility might be limited in the higher areas this morning, but there should be some very good conditions to be found up there. Snow is due through today and into tomorrow. So yes, the Kandahar lift and slope is open to the general public today. That area - the far left as you look to the mountain from the village - is only open to the general public on limited days during the season (it is usually used for competitions and training), and today is one of those days. Let's Kandahar! Chansu! I bet Nasuki is going to be checking it out.... The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning everyone. The long weekend is over and today we are back to something like normal. Though of course it is still peak season. Fresh snowfall headlines as I can find them: Hakuba Cortina: 10cm (base); 15cm (top) Hakuba Norikura: 10cm Hakuba 47: 0cm (but saying that blowing winds stole the measuring point of 5-10cm of fallen snow!) Hakuba Happo-one: 10cm (top of Riesen) Some snow falling later in the afternoon yesterday though nothing major and this morning we seem to have around 10cm of fresh on the mountain. Earlier snow has eased away and right now there's actually an increasing amount of blue sky over the village, though still a lot of cloud around the mountains and snow falling along with very limited visibility in places. So a real mix of weather conditions over the region this morning, as you sometimes get of course. Hopefully we'll be getting some more snowfall tonight. I know the numbers are far from the whole story and as always I encourage people to not dwell on them. Just to dwell on them for a moment though (doh); I just wish that I could have more days when I was able to report some really big silly mad snow numbers to you. They're always fun and exciting. We're just not seeing many of those days this time... BUT, I have had some excellent days out there and I plan to have many more. And I hope that you can too! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The consistent snowfall continues. This morning I have measured 17cm of snow down here close by Hirafu so we can expect 20+cm on the slopes. Another nice overnight reset, just what we want. And yes it does look like the snow should be continuing over the next few days as well as the very cold conditions. I really hope all this consistent snow isn't getting boring. ;) We're past the busiest Chinese New Year holiday period now, so... what's next. Valentines Day! I'm kidding (sort of). Though there may well be some free chocolate on Thursday to celebrate this most traditional of Japanese traditions. Just as long as it's from the heart, and not 'giri-choco'. But seriously: we're now almost in the middle of February, which means that we are now slap bang in the middle of the snow season and I am half way through my commentary of the season. It has been a pleasing and mostly drama-free first half. Let's try to not forget how lucky we are to be able to enjoy all of this. Mikaeri Weather Station: 15cm new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 240cm. Hirafu Peak: -16°, snowfall 20cm in last 12hrs. Mizuno no Sawa: -13.01°, NW3.8-5.6m/s, 11cm snowfall in last 12hrs, mountain base: snow depth 180cm. Cape Benkei: NNW12m/s, Cape Kamui: WNW9m/s, pressure 1022hPa, wave 1.3m. 10-20cm new snow until early morning with no significant snowdrift development. Snow quality is varying dependant on elevation. Snow pack is not showing any obvious inconsistent layers and general avalanche risk is low. Above 1100m a weak slab 30-40cm has formed from the NW wind and there is the possibility of fracture from rider stimulation. Be careful on leeward steep slopes. Do not wait halfway down or in the valley bottoms. Avoid traversing under knolls and cornices. All gates are expected to be open. Be aware of a sudden weather change. Parents or guardians taking children into out of bounds areas carry a heavy responsibility. Children (or beginners) cannot bear this responsibility. There are many dangers lurking in the winter mountains. Playing around cornices and other dangerous features can end in a very serious accident. Always act with safety in mind. Snow is good today. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a very nice morning and we have received a respectable 7cm of new snow in the village which will equate to 10-15cm on the resort I think. There is little in the way of breeze and the temperature is milder than the last few days, which is good. Should be a good powder morning, but with today being a public holiday expect a bit of a queue for the lifts like there was yesterday. It is still snowing very lightly but this is not compromising the visibility. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . No fresh snow being reported overnight apart from 2cm from the Uenotaira area. I wasn't able to check the official numbers late afternoon so I apologise for missing those. I measured slightly over 5cm since the morning. It is a cold and cloudy morning. Not much sign of sun, not at the moment anyway. As expected, it was a busy day yesterday. This being the last day of the long weekend, today will be less so, especially as the day goes on. Tomorrow we should be seeing more fresh snow falling with regular snowfall over the coming week. That sounds good to me. If you want to check out the mostly unavailable Kandahar lift, tomorrow is your chance! That was the plan anyway, hopefully it is still going ahead. It will be open to the general public tomorrow and then only on 1st March after that. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another 16cm of snow since my measurement yesterday morning as the snow keeps on steadily coming in. Some very fine conditions to be enjoyed - and lots of people around to enjoy them. All should be open as normal this morning. I don't seem to have many words in my bag this morning, so I think I'll just get myself out onto the mountain. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -10°, 13cm snowfall in the last 24hrs, calm. Moiwa 800m: -12.2°, W7.8m/s, minor cornice and snowdrift development, 10cm snowfall in last 12hrs. Mikaeri Weather Station: minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 240cm, 1150m: -12°, W15m/s, snowfall 10-20cm. Hirafu Peak: -12°, W15/ms, snowfall 20cm. Mizuno no Sawa: -13.47°, NW8.4m/s, 13cm snowfall in last 24hrs, mountain base: snow depth 174cm. Kutchan Weather Station:- 8.3°, S2.3m/s, snow depth 194cm. Suttsu Weather Station:- 5.3°, NW4.3m/s, snow depth 58cm.Cape Benkei: N10m/s, Cape Kamui: WNW8m/s, pressure 1025hPa, wave 1.7m. There is inconsistency in the upper 15-20cm of snow pack, however the general avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before going through the gates. Proceed 1 by 1 on steep slopes. Do not wait in the valley bottoms, these are the avalanche paths. Most avalanches are caused by peoples actions, but they also occur naturally often by cornice collapse. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning. Yes!! A good new layer of fresh snow to report to you this morning. I like these mornings. Kumanoyu are reporting 'over 20cm' and Yakebitaiyama are reporting about 30cm. And I measured 26cm. Good quality light powder snow too. Just how we like it. It is very cold. It's not due to continue for the whole day, perhaps cloudy or even clearing somewhat this afternoon. And there's more due over the coming week, so we're in pretty good shape at the moment. Tomorrow may be Monday but it's a national holiday so there will be lots of weekend visitors staying on until tomorrow.
