It was snowing during the day yesterday, just cloudy in the evening. Bit of a late start for the quad lift as they coped with all the snow and there was a bit of course closing (A6) for a bit due to poor visibility. This morning it's cloudy and a bit windy. Bit of blue sky peeking through at times and maybe that will increase during the day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I almost feel like I could do a bit of automated copy-pasting and spend more time with my toast in a morning at the moment. There was a bit of blue sky once again for a short time late morning yesterday, but for the most part not much scenery to be enjoyed. But there was most certainly lots of lovely snow to be enjoyed. And this morning there's another 14cm of snowfall to report. Snow. Very cold. Limited visibility. That kind of thing. It might be a little more windy today but I doubt enough to trouble the normal operation of lifts. It still looks like there may be some clearer skies early in the week next week and probably a bit of snow every day until then. It is Valentines Day today - hurray! - and I suspect there might be some sweets being handed out in places today. If not, I know I'll be jolly disappointed. I see Annupuri are going to be supplying chocolate to the first 100 people who buy a lift ticket this morning - boys or girls. (The 'tradition' in Japan is that Valentines day is when chocolate is supplied to boys from girls. And chocolate is supplied to girls from boys on White Day on March 14th. That lot is a discussion for a different place!) --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -10℃, 15cm snowfall in 24h. Moiwa800m: -12.9℃, W7.3m/s, cornice and snowdrifts developments. Mikaeri junction: -12℃, snowdrifts developments. Annupuri1120m snow depth 250cm. Mizuno no sawa 12cm snowfall in 12h, NNW9-13.5m/s, 185cm snow depth. Hirafu peak: -17℃, strong winds developing snowdrifts, 25cm snowfall in 12h. Suttsu weather station: -5.0℃, 61cm snow depth. Kutchan: -16.9℃, 198cm snow depth. Benkei cape: N9m/s, Kamui cape: NNE3m/s, 1023hPa, 2.0m waves. Intermittent 10-15m/s northerly storm has persisted above 800m elevation, making cornices and snowdrifts develop slowly. The sea surface temperature is relatively high, making snow clouds form more abundantly and resulting in higher snow precipitation than average. The avalanche hazard level in leeward slopes above 800m elevation is moderately high. All gates are scheduled to open. Do not stimulate cornices and knolls and ride one by one. Avoid valley bottoms and better not stop halfway down a slope. Do not traverse across slopes under cornices. The weather is changing quickly, beware of whiteouts. Safety is never guaranteed in Winter Mountains. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a wow of a morning in Furano with nice clear sky above. There has been a 3cm dusting of new snow, just enough to keep the slopes nice and fresh. It is calm at the moment with no wind around the base area. The sun is out and I think it will stay with us to afternoon when some light snow is expected. Lots of people out early in the ski village grabbing their morning coffee or heading out on a day trip to one of the other great central Hokkaido ski areas nearby. The cold conditions are set to continue for a while yet; perhaps some milder conditions early next week. Hello from Shiga Kogen. 6cm of snow to add this morning but it's just cloudy at the moment - though it may well be snowing in some places (looks like that). Lots of cloud and the forecast does have us down for the chance of light snow through the day. And tomorrow too. Maybe sun on Friday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The snow clouds remain over us. Overnight the resort is reporting 5-10cm and adding to the snow that they reported during the day yesterday that makes generally around 20cm of fresh. I have measured 18cm myself since my report yesterday. Light snow is forecast for today and tomorrow and it seems we have a chance of clearer skies on Friday. It is keeping cold and let us hope that continues. Cold is good - we can always add a layer to cope with that and it's great for the snow conditions. Anyway, time to put on my skis! Have a good one. It was a cold day yesterday and some fine conditions to be enjoyed, with some snow falling during the day though I noticed 47 (for example) reporting 'not much' in terms of new cm. Visibility remained limited in most places. Light snow this morning with just a little on the ground and apparently 5-10cm or so on the ski resorts with snow falling at the moment too. So here's what the resorts are reporting: Hakuba Cortina: 10+cm Hakuba Happo-one: 10cm (top of Riesen) Hakuba Goryu: 5cm (top) Varying visibility this morning - fairly decent lower down but limited in higher areas with the mountains shrouded in cloud. Just to add to what I wrote yesterday after reading a few comments: I am guessing that almost all of you reading this report do not want me to be making up numbers just to make things sound perfect like some kind of marketing brochure. Don't worry, I'm never going to be doing that. I'll report what I see (backed up by a few reference points) and what the ski resorts are reporting. If you want to read a marketing brochure, why not just go read one of them... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I bring you news of 14cm of fresh snowfall. And once again, it's very cold and the snow quality is just excellent. :) And once again, it looks like such consistent conditions are going to continue through until around Sunday. Is that some sunshine I see on the forecast for Monday?! We ain't seeing much of that of late, just a few glimpses now and again. Bit of blue sky around lunchtime yesterday was nice. As long as the snow doesn't stay away for too long, I think many of us would be excited to have a day of clearer skies. (Just to be very clear, that is of course not in any way a 'complaint' - I'm just imagining perfect scenarios!) Rather limited visibility at the start of the day today but all lifts appear to be opening as planned. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -10℃, 15cm snowfall in 24h. Moiwa 800m: -13.1℃, NW4.3m/s, cornice and snowdrifts developments. Mikaeri junction: -13℃, developing snowdrifts. Annupuri1120m snow depth 250cm. Mizuno no Sawa: 6cm snowfall in 12h, 8cm in 24h. Hirafu peak: -16℃, wind peaking at 15m/s late night, snowdrifts developed. Suttsu weather station: -6.1℃, NW14.5m/s at midnight. Kutchan: -8.6℃, 194cm snow depth. Benkei cape light house: NW9m/s, Kamui cape: NNW8m/s, 1022hPa, 1.4m waves. The weather is changing quickly and a 10-15m/s storm is making cornices and snowdrifts develop slowly above 800m elevation. According to pressure tests, the overall avalanche risk seems relatively low, however 40cm thick surface slab avalanches caused by snowdrifts’ uneven bonding are still likely to occur in 1000m leeward steep slopes. All gates are scheduled to open, however make sure to be well prepared for the backcountry and seek for advice from the patrols before stepping out of the gates. Avy beacons and airbags are not decorations. It makes no sense to carry them if you’re not familiar with how to use them. Cornices are highly likely to fall around this time of the season. Cornice drops may be fun, but is not worth risking your life. Building kickers wherever without being aware of the consequences is nonsense. If you do build one, make sure to flatten it before you leave. Somebody could get hurt. The snow condition is wonderful again today. Bit of a blowy wind but it doesn't seem to be affecting lift operations at the moment. Might need to keep an eye on that. Snow clouds are forecast to be with us for a few days so more cm to report tomorrow I think. Naeba is somewhat quieter this morning after the busy weekend. If you can get here on weekdays, make it so!
