  • Hakuba Now: Sunday 31st March 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 399cm Posted on Sunday 31st March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Snow! Yes, it's snowing. There are some almost comically large snow depth increases and numbers being reported by the Hakuba Happo-one resort late morning. (I am saying that in a friendly 'sugoi!!' kind of voice). They are reporting 30+cm at base and 50+cm in top areas. (!). Now I do not like to cast doubt on information being reported, but it really is difficult to imagine that much when you consider the 1-3cm that Hakuba Cortina are reporting and the 10cm that Hakuba 47 are reporting from their upper slopes. Along with the few cm that I can report from down by my base measuring point. 30-50cm?! (Perhaps the time difference between the different reported info is making a difference, the 47 and Cortina numbers coming from earlier in the morning?) Unfortunately I am unable to get out on the mountain myself today to go check it all out myself. However much there actually is up there, it is of course totally brilliant to be able to report decent fresh snowfall this morning. What a great end to March! Some ski resorts closing for the season at the end of the day so choices will be thinned down tomorrow. I'll be with you until the end of the season in early May. ----- Hakuba Happo-one Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 320cm - Usagidaira: 225cm - Nakiyama: 40cm Notes: - Nakiyama South Side open; Shirakaba South Side part open - Other base areas are now closed - Urakuro and Omusubi areas closed - Top areas remain open - Hakuba Happo-one plans to be open until Monday 6th May ----- Hakuba Goryu Official snow depth: - Top: 260cm - Toomi: 130cm - Iimori: 60cm Notes: - Adventure, Snow Diving, Cosmo River, Sunny Way and Straight Whiskey closed for the season - Top areas all open - Hakuba Goryu plans to be open until Monday 6th May ----- Hakuba 47 Official snow depth: - Top: 235cm - Base: 80cm Notes: - All courses are open - Note: Generally the Line D lift usually operates if and when the gondola is not operating - Hakuba 47 plans to be open until Monday 6th May ----- Tsugaike Kogen Official snow depth: - Tsuga-no-mori: 275cm - Han-no-ki: 225cm - Maruyama: 75cm - Shirakaba: 185cm - Champion: 80cm - Oya-no-hara: 35cm - Kane-no-naru-oka: 60cm Notes: - Tsugaike Ropeway is now generally open for spring operations (check for daily operation plans) - All courses apart from Uma-no-se and part of Lower course through the forecast are open - Tsugaike Kogen plans to be open until Monday 6th May ----- Hakuba Cortina Official snow depth: - Top: 215cm - Base: 105cm Notes: - Lifts 1, 2 and 4 are operating - Ikenota, Hieda Forest, Mt Hieda 1, Itadaira and Ipponmatsu open - Hakuba Cortina plans to be open until Sunday 31st March ----- Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: - 80cm Notes: - Number 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 lifts are operating; courses part open - Hakuba Norikura plans to be open until Sunday 31st March ----- Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Official snow depth: - 125cm Notes: - Lifts 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 are operating - About half of the courses are open - Plans to open until 7th April Hakuba Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Sunday 31st March 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 399cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 50 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 33cm (29th January) November 2018 snowfall 0cm December 2018 snowfall 112cm reported on 12 days January 2019 snowfall 207cm reported on 19 days February 2019 snowfall 33cm reported on 11 days March 2019 snowfall 47cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. The temperature remains low and snow depth in high elevation stays. The avalanche risk is moderately high during the morning. 25cm or thinner surface slab avalanches are to be expected in leeward 40° slopes around 1000m elevation. Sun and temperature may affect the slabs and result in a wide range simultaneous slide. Cracks, up to 3m depth, are hidden under the new snow, beware as they are difficult to see from above. Glide avalanche risk from 1000m elevation is still low, however it is strongly recommended to stay away of the valley bottoms. Thaw at the base of the mountain will progress, beware of collapsing snow-bridges. All gates are scheduled to open. Be well prepared and ask the ski patrol’s advice before stepping our of bounds. I expect it will be the wet and heavy kind, but who are we to complain. Rather, celebrate! It felt less positive overnight with rain and rather stormy weather conditions, so a nice surprise to hear about that 15cm. Expect to see the sun again tomorrow but there's more snow due beyond that. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning. Mad weather overnight in the region. It might have been madder if I had seen it but I just heard rain and strong winds. So it is a good surprise to see fresh snow on the ground again this morning. Both the Yakebitaiyama and Kumanoyu resort areas are reporting 10cm of fresh snow and I measured 7cm. Going back to the Nishidateyama lift incident and operation status - the Number 1 quad lift is operating; the Number 2 triple lift is down. • Hakuba Now: Thursday 28th March 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 395cm Posted on Thursday 28th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning all. Fresh snow again! And actually some fairly decent numbers too, especially when you look at the date. Let's see what the resorts are reporting: Hakuba Cortina: 3cm (top, bottom) Hakuba Happo-one: 8cm (top Riesen lift) --- but they are also mentioning 20cm on social media Hakuba 47: 5-10cm (lower); 10-15cm (top) We are measuring 3cm at our point down at base. I like the sound of that 20cm, though I can't personally confirm it and it's a little curious how it is so different from the number they usually put out (the 8cm I mention above). 47 are also mentioning 20cm 'in some places' in upper areas. I'm willing to take that on and perhaps some investigation is required. It is probably a bit wet and heavy but I doubt anyone will be moaning about that! Great to see snow on the ground again early morning and if the forecasts are correct we still haven't seen the last of it. Before that though, some clearer skies due tomorrow. • Shiga Kogen Now: Wednesday 27th March 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 676cm Posted on Wednesday 27th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. A bit of drama since my last report. Something of a storm last night and it seems to be affecting the Nishidateyama Number 2 triple lift which has been... knocked out?!... and now closed earlier than planned. Hearing about some kind of fire started by a lightening strike, no injuries apparently though I am not quite sure of the full story. Oh yes, some fresh snow too with both Yakebitaiyama and Kumanoyu reporting 5cm this morning. I can add a measured 3cm to my report. Fine now but the weekly forecast shows, er, regular snowfall over the coming days. Omoshiroi!
