The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . This morning while we have not much more than a dusting down here at base areas, the resort is reporting 15cm of fresh snowfall on the top areas. I expect it will be the wet and heavy kind, but who are we to complain. Rather, celebrate! It felt less positive overnight with rain and rather stormy weather conditions, so a nice surprise to hear about that 15cm. Expect to see the sun again tomorrow but there's more snow due beyond that. It's certainly an interesting last part of March we are experiencing this year. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning. Mad weather overnight in the region. It might have been madder if I had seen it but I just heard rain and strong winds. So it is a good surprise to see fresh snow on the ground again this morning. Both the Yakebitaiyama and Kumanoyu resort areas are reporting 10cm of fresh snow and I measured 7cm. Going back to the Nishidateyama lift incident and operation status - the Number 1 quad lift is operating; the Number 2 triple lift is down. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning all. Fresh snow again! And actually some fairly decent numbers too, especially when you look at the date. Let's see what the resorts are reporting: Hakuba Cortina: 3cm (top, bottom) Hakuba Happo-one: 8cm (top Riesen lift) --- but they are also mentioning 20cm on social media Hakuba 47: 5-10cm (lower); 10-15cm (top) We are measuring 3cm at our point down at base. I like the sound of that 20cm, though I can't personally confirm it and it's a little curious how it is so different from the number they usually put out (the 8cm I mention above). 47 are also mentioning 20cm 'in some places' in upper areas. I'm willing to take that on and perhaps some investigation is required. It is probably a bit wet and heavy but I doubt anyone will be moaning about that! Great to see snow on the ground again early morning and if the forecasts are correct we still haven't seen the last of it. Before that though, some clearer skies due tomorrow. Something of a storm last night and it seems to be affecting the Nishidateyama Number 2 triple lift which has been... knocked out?!... and now closed earlier than planned. Hearing about some kind of fire started by a lightening strike, no injuries apparently though I am not quite sure of the full story. Oh yes, some fresh snow too with both Yakebitaiyama and Kumanoyu reporting 5cm this morning. I can add a measured 3cm to my report. Fine now but the weekly forecast shows, er, regular snowfall over the coming days. Omoshiroi! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There is a bit more fresh snow to report to you this morning from base and light snow might be what we get at times during the day today. It is keeping rather windy at the moment and this morning all of the top lifts as well as the Annupuri Gondola on hold. Quite cold as well with temperatures not likely to rise much into positive numbers during the day. There are now just 12 more days left for the Niseko Hanazono (good on you for extending) and Niseko Village areas. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -1℃, slight snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -4℃, NNW8.74m/s, cornice and snowdrifts developments. Annupuri1100m: -8.3℃, WNW8.1m/s, 250cm snow depth. Hirafu peak: -7℃, strong westerly wind developing snowdrifts. Hirafu1000m: -8.3℃, W6m/s, Kutchan weather station: 0.3℃, WNW7.1m/s, 86cm snow depth. Benkei cape: NNW17m/s, Kamui cape: NW11m/s, 1006hPa, 2.5m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is steep and a strong westerly wind is blowing above 800m elevation, making snowdrifts and cornices develop quickly. Although not thick, those snowdrifts are very unstable and the avalanche risk will remain high in leeward steep slopes and knoll terrain during the morning, even after the wind calms down. Wide avalanches triggered by riding stimulation of crusty snowdrifts are also to be expected in 1000m valley sidewalls and cornice slopes. 10cm thick slides can run very fast and cannot be overrun. It is strongly recommended to avoid those kind of slopes until the wind calms down. Thaw will progress in lower elevation, beware of falling snow-bridges. 10cm of fresh snow has blanketed the tree-runs. Gates opening is undetermined, please respect the ski patrol’s instructions. The artificial avalanche experimentation operated by Nagoya University and NIED has finished successfully. Debris and cracks are present in Mikaeri bowl, although the Moiwa gate 6 is closed, please use caution when touring in this area. Wind affected the quad around lunchtime. We are due for a day of calmer conditions with cloud and clearer skies forecast. We are officially into 'spring season' now. Apparently the sun is out and it is going to be a fine day after that snow that we got yesterday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, yesterday was certainly a lot of fun. This morning there is a lot of blue sky and some cloud. It is a fine Monday morning. And while it may well be somewhat milder today, we're going to be getting colder again beyond tomorrow and there is a chance of some more snow. Hopefully wind won't be an issue. Niseko is so much more quiet now than peak season. As you might well expect of course. Funny how it takes on a really different feel/atmosphere; to me anyway. A bit more... relaxed. And that will only get more so over the last month of the season. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -2°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -3.4°, SW2.13m/s, no new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -5.6°, WSW5.6m/s, snow depth 260cm. Hirafu 1000m: -5.4°, SSW7.80m/s. Kutchan Weather Station: -1.0°, snow depth 100cm, ESE1.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:SE2m/s. Kamui Cape: SSW18m/s, pressure 1007hPa, wave 1.7m. Snowdrift development has stopped but strong winds are still blowing above 1100m and on the seas north of Cape Shakotan. Above 1000m the risk of cornices collapsing continues, also hard slabs bonded to SE facing steep slopes are breaking easily by rider stimulation, possibly triggering an avalanche. From observation, leeward snowdrifts below 1000m are starting to stabilise and avalanche risk will fall during the day. Peak gates are expected to be open, however please respect the patrols decisions. Moiwa Gate 6 is closed due to the Quad lift operation being terminated. Many people visited Moiwa ski resort this winter and we are grateful we finished the season with no out of bounds accidents. Nagoya University and the Disaster Prevention Science Research Center will be carrying out tests in the Mikaeri area today. There's some lifts affected by wind this morning - top of Goryu, gondola and top Happo lifts, Tsugaike Ropeway. If you are here and plan to be out this morning I recommend checking directly with the resorts to make sure what is open. If you can get out though, there should be some nice conditions to find this morning. And there's an increasing amount of blue sky starting to show from behind the clouds too.
