I bring news of fresh snowfall and (as much as we'd love to be in the middle of the blizzard right now...) lovely blue skies with just some cloud remaining. The resort is reporting less than 10cm of fresh snowfall, I am measuring 6cm. Looks like we can expect some sunshine before more snow tomorrow night. That doesn't look like it will be prolonged though with more sun due on Sunday and Monday. We will need to wait until the later part of the coming week before we can expect more snow. Hopefully from them we might be blesses with some proper Madarao-like snowfall. Madarao has officially delayed opening as noted yesterday, and they will open as soon as there is enough snow. Realistically, that is going to be next weekend at the earliest. (Please!) Hakuba 47 and Hakuba Goryu are both reporting about 10cm of fresh snow on the upper areas. Hakuba Happo-one are reporting 2cm of snow by the top of the Gondola and reporting 10cm of new snowfall for Kurobishi. The clouds have been packing up early morning and moving on leaving us with increasingly blue skies. Hopefully they will be back with us with a new delivery of snow tomorrow night. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Happily, we have an improved situation this morning. (Phew!) 8cm of fresh snowfall on the ground and noticeably colder conditions this morning. That is most welcome but it's not going to give us deep conditions out on the mountain especially when you consider what we were dealt the previous few days. Take care out there, might be some scraping sounds. I was about to say that there seems to be less windy conditions at the moment, but notice that as I post this report the Gondola and Jumbo Number 3 lift at Annupuri are on hold so the upper area of Annupuri isn't open at the start of the day. That may well change, of course. Nighta at Niseko Annupuri and Niseko Village until 8:30pm; none at Niseko Grand Hirafu just yet. Things are looking good for snow tomorrow. Although there was some snowfall it has not amounted to much accumulation on the ground, and I have measured only 2cm this morning. Today's weather is a real contrast and we are starting the day with clear skies and it should be a nice sunny day through the afternoon. Temperatures are cold at the moment but will rise well above the current -12c. Tomorrow and Wednesday are forecast to be warm days with some rain. The resort is reporting a snow base of 140cm. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . In these pre-season days, as I wrote once before, I always wonder about putting up snow reports when we get a tiny amount, and then we know it's going to disappear in the next few days. Which is the situation today. OK, I admit, I was gone over the weekend, and it is the season of the bonenkai - "forgetting the year" (literally) year-end parties. I didn't forget you, dear reader, but when these are over I'll be ready for the daily reports on snow that will actually be the base of the snowpack. We have somewhere around 20cm on the ground, and a little bit fell last night to coat the trees in a touch of white. That's all melting in the sun (creating beautiful, sparkling water drops) and blowing off in the wind that's now picking up. Over the next few days, the freezing line is going to go 2500 meters—over the top of Mt. Myoko—so the snow will melt and we'll have one more chance to get those last, neglected pre-winter preparations finished up. In my case, it also means dragging the carcass of my long-working, now departed snow thrower out of the way (blown turbo....so sad). But, anyway, I think this means that the openings slated for the 14th are not all that likely. I've said it before for Myoko, and people get all antsy about it, but look at Christmas Day for snow. Lots of years we have really wondered if we were going to get a white Christmas or not, and it usually comes around just in time. If we're really lucky, a little earlier. All good things coming to those who wait, right? It will be good soon (we just have to wait). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a beauty of a morning too after the murkier and windier tone of the report yesterday. About 10cm of fresh snow down at base and surely more than that higher up. Very cold this morning. But lovely clear blue skies and sunshine. An early start should be great today. Clearer skies are due today and tomorrow too and it should be milder during the day today after this very cold start to today, and certainly more so tomorrow. For the next fresh snowfall we will probably need to wait until later on Wednesday. Niseko Village have their gondola lift, cunningly called 'Niseko Gondola', moving today and Holiday course at Hirafu is available. The Avalanche Reports begin from this morning and a very big 'yoroshiku onegai shimasu' to the good people putting them together for all our benefit. Night time operations (nighta) is planned to begin for the season from Wednesday this week. All the bits of the puzzle are lining up and clicking into place which is a jolly good thing to be able to report. OK, I'm off to.... er, wash my hair (or something). ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -10℃, 2cm snowfall in 12h. Light SW breeze with 5cm snowfall at 700m elevation. Coastal data: Benkei cape SW3m/s, Kamui capeSW11m/s, 1026hPa, 1.7m waves. The weather is calm under a high-pressure system. The setting up of weather stations is delayed due to the lack of snow and we have minimal data to evaluate the hazard level. So far, the predominant wind direction has been from the SW and we’ve seen large fluctuation of temperature. Cornices and snowdrifts have already developed above 1000m elevation and are not to be stimulated. Accidents occur when conditions align and are not dependant on the amount of snow. The out of bounds area is not suitable for riding yet. Do not step out of bounds to seek fresh snow. The groomers condition is good. Visibility is good today, beautiful conditions for carving, however always be cautious not to overspeed. Remain in control and be precautious and most accidents can be avoided. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a windy day but the extreme winds in the early hours of the morning have reduced to a moderate level as I write this. There is a good new layer of snow across the village of around 15cm - this will definitely vary in different locations due to the wind effect though. It is pleasing to see the resort open up more courses, and with Panorama now open there are more options for the advanced skiers. Groomers have been active on Kitanomine in the last couple of days preparing the slopes for opening - this should be soon but no date has been announce yet. A light dusting of snow overnight, well maybe a bit more than a dusting.. just 1-2 cm on the ground in places, I am seeing slightly over 1cm around my place. It is looking moodily cloudy this morning with gas/fog hanging around adding to the atmosphere. Tomorrow things should be much clearer as sunshine is forecast and as I think I mentioned before we are expecting some milder conditions too. Not too mild please. It's going to be at least towards the later part of the coming week before we get more snow. My oh my it is funny sometimes how quickly a situation can change... from today all of the main courses at Geto will be open, and they are rightfully boasting about it! Fastest to be fully open in Honshu, with 14km of rideable terrain. I am impressed. But more than that, I am excited so forgive me for quickly posting this and getting out there myself... Oh, being true to my reporting means I feel the need to just fill you in a bit more. Just a little snow the report yesterday and a little light snow now. Bit of a wind too but not too much to be too much of an annoyance. The forecast for today is cloud/snow, with some clearer skies forecast for tomorrow. Should be good! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A happy Sunday morning to you all from a cold and snowy Niseko. I guess some of you reading this will be here and enjoying this relatively quiet early season. I enjoyed few hours at Hanazono with a few friends who were worried about coming early season. They seemed suitably impressed after a few runs, especially when the sun said hello. I am adding another 8cm of fresh snowfall from base, as observed since my report yesterday. So there is a nice new layer this morning to add to what we got. Today is the first day of the season when pesky winds are going to affect lifts - booooo! As I post this report, at Annupuri, the Gondola and upper Jumbo Number 3 pair lift are both on hold at the start of the day due to wind warnings on the mountain. Other than that it would appear that operations are unchanged for this morning across the mountain. Of course, that could change during the day. (It didn't seem too windy before when I was outside...) It is going to get milder around Tuesday and Wednesday and there will probably be sunshine, but there is snow lined up on the forecast beyond that.
