The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Happy New Year from myself and everyone else at SnowJapan. Here's to being able to report lots of snow! Nature need to co-operate for that to happen. And after a bit of a dodgy start after the finer weather starting the day yesterday, snow started falling and it felt like winter again. Not as much snow as we would like, around 10cm or so at base areas, with hopefully double and more than that up on the top areas; so it should be a fine morning. (The official site snowfall numbers appear to be a bit wonky this morning). Actually there's some breaks in the cloud now and even some blue sky - but that shouldn't last all day as further snowfall is due this afternoon, through tonight and tomorrow which sounds good. Have a fine New Years Day! Lift operations and open courses appear to remain unchanged. Basically the upper areas of the resort are open, down to Paradise and Mizunashi runs. The Skyline course is not yet open as well as chunks of lower areas of the resort. The Hikage and Nagasaka lower courses are open.... the latter as a connecting course. I wouldn't be surprised if a bit more opened up today. You need to get a Gondola back down to base from the open upper areas as you cannot yet ski/snowboard down. A few more snowy days and hopefully the resort will get to be fully open. I'm totally looking forward to that! Again, kind of modest really in terms of numbers so far, but there has been 15cm of lovely snowfall so far and I suspect more than that in places due to the wind blowing it around. It is continuing to come down nicely. It is also a very cold morning so we need to wrap up super well before heading out. I see a lot of folks already lining up for that first lift at Hirafu. Come on, give us a wave! There'll be more fresh snow to report tomorrow. ----- The early morning Annupuri gondola operation was cancelled this morning due to the weather conditions. I suspect other lifts might be affected today, but as of 8:30am the official site appears to be overloading and not being very responsive - so I can't confirm anything this morning. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Things are changing very quickly as I write our report for the last day of 2019. Just 30 minutes ago it was mostly sunny, very warm and with only a light wind from the south. It has quickly gotten overcast, the barometer is crashing down (and it is low!) and a little light rain is falling occasionally. The forecast is for the freezing level to come down very quickly, so we could have much colder temperatures, some good snowfall, and perhaps some fairly strong winds in just a few hours. The winds offshore are already very strong, and coming from the northwest - just what we want to see for some good snowfall! I also have to relay what the head of one of the ski schools who has been here for nearly 50 years reported at a meeting last night: this low snow has happened before (about 40 years ago, he said), with basically no snow before New Year's Day. And then it turned around. Don't lose hope, snow sliders of all styles! The season has only just begun. Take all reported snow depths as very optimistic; we can see brown spots here and there, but, hopefully, they'll be covered very soon! Well, we did get some snow falling yesterday morning and I feel we all deserve a little added to the report to represent that - though it didn't amount to much and the resorts aren't reporting any new cm (as you can see below). Cortina appear to be open again, with their Number 2 and 4 lifts operating; though they are saying that the courses are not groomed (due to lack of snow). This morning lots of cloud and... (small voice...) a bit of rain. One of those days when it looks like higher temperatures higher up than down at base. But snow is due later on. I believe. There will be various New Year Eve things going on tonight including fireworks. I'm guessing one or two people might enjoy a drink or two as well. ;) Take care, have fun and see you tomorrow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Gosh, I so wish I didn't have to end the decade (!) with this, but we got rained on last night. Quite heavily at times. With that annoying news out of the way, looking forward... And indeed, just a little earlier light snow started falling and there is a dusting of snow already on the ground. It is going to get colder as the day progresses. I am confident that I will be bringing you some numbers tomorrow morning to start the new year off in a good way. In the meantime there may well be disruptions today to lift operations due to the weather conditions we are expecting. It also sounds like some New Year events may be called off due to the stormy conditions that we have expected. So if you were planning on taking part or going to any events, I would be sure to check up on them before heading out. ----- OK, so it's 2020 from tomorrow. A new year. A refreshed outlook. And hopefully the start of an onslaught of consistent heavy snowfall. That is what I want; I'm pretty sure it's what you will be wanting to. Make it so! Moiwa 800m: -1.4°, NW3.95m/s. Hirafu 1000m: -3.3°. Hanazono 720m: -1.5°, E4.4m/s. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 105cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: N7m/s. Kamui Cape WNW8m/s, 1004hPa, wave 1.2m. Heavy rain fell overnight and at 5am positive temperatures were recorded up to 700m. Expect the temperature to drop and blizzard conditions as a typical winter type barometric system sets up. Very high NW winds and blizzard conditions will continue above 800m through tomorrow. Do not ride in strictly off limits areas like Haru no Taki looking for fresh snow. There is a high probability of large scale avalanches due to slab formation by the rapid temperature changes. There is still not enough snow to ride off the ski runs yet. If an accident occurs during this bad weather the helicopter cant fly. If you are not confident with a self rescue think long and hard about going out. It would be a shame to get injured on such a small mountain. The Niseko community respects your freedom but places great importance on safety too. Be cautious. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Light snow is falling and there is 2cm of new snow on the ground in the village, and around 5cm at the top of the resort. The snow is forecast to stop later in the morning. At the moment there is valley fog down to the base and visibility will be limited until this lifts. The wind is moderate. Snow conditions are very good on trail with good skiing on the Kitanomine side and the link course. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 59cm Posted on Sunday 29th December 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . There has been some snow down to base it is nothing significant yet and just a light covering; hopefully a bit more higher up. There are lots of people around now as New Year approaches, meaning that the limited areas of the resort that are open are quite busy. A bit more of the mountain is now open including parts of Paradise and Shobunuma and the Renraku connecting course. The forecast is saying still that snow is due on Tuesday - tomorrow is going to be slightly milder; hopefully it won't be too much. Please check with the resort regarding nighta operations on the Yokokura area and the night operations of the Ropeway... for nighta they are delaying until at least 2nd Jan, for the ropeway it appears to be on a daily decision basis. I just wish there was a co-ordinated centralised place for good up to date information (and I mean in Japanese, not English). Sometimes it feels like I'm going on a mystery puzzle hunt trying to put it all together, which seems odd when it's just one mountain! (Heavy snow letting all of the mountain open... that would also certainly do the trick!) The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Just a small amount of snow since my report yesterday and this morning the skies are clear and blue. It's a cold start too. Should be a real feel-good morning and the snow should be good too. More areas of Shiga Kogen are now opening - it actually looks like the majority of lifts are now moving looking at the official site - but the following areas remain unavailable: Shibutoge, Giant, Nishitateyama, Higashitateyama and Terakoya. The Terakoya pair lift is moving as a connecting lift and I believe the Higashitateyama gondola is also operating for connection purposes. Next snow is due on Tuesday. One more decent snowfall and let's hope we can declare 'all open!'.
