- Yuzawa Now: Sunday 22nd May 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1338cm Posted on Sunday 22nd May 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's 22nd May and the last day of the season for the Kagura ski area. That's two months after the first ski area closed for the season! There is still fairly good snow cover on the main Kagura run, as you can see in the photo below. The weather hasn't been great this last weekend. At 7am this morning Kagura reported rain and a temperature of just +5C. Down in town it probably won't reach 20C today, though the rain has eased off with just a few spots left in places. The day should generally just be cloudy. Hopefully, we will get some nice weather before the rainy season kicks in. Then it's the hot summer. The Fuji Rock Festival will be held at Naeba (29th-31st July). There's some summer skiing in Yuzawa as follows: Kagura (the Mitsumata slope): weekends and holidays between 23rd July and 2nd October (and also 12th and 15th August) GALA Yuzawa: on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays between 22nd July and 28th August And then the beautiful autumn. After that, the countdown to winter. There are now signs that the Japanese government is planning to be easing up on the international border restrictions in the coming weeks and months. Fingers crossed for good news! We will post major news updates here. That's it from the Yuzawa Now reports this season. Reports will resume in November. Thanks for reading. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1338cm Posted on Friday 1st April 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's April and I have some fresh snow to report from higher areas! Kagura is reporting 2cm of snowfall (it's also reporting a strong northerly wind which means that some lift operation changes up there, at least at the start of the day. Both Ropeways appear to be opening though). Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 4-5cm, presumably up at the top of the gondola. There's no cm of snow to report from base and town areas, but thankfully after a day of rain (more than we expected), it's not raining this morning. Roads are damp and it's cloudy early on, but some sun is on the forecast for the day. Currently 2C in town. Sunday is the last day of the season for quite a few ski areas in the region. Beyond that, we will post most specific details about what remains open. Currently the forecast for the weekend is a clear and sunny start tomorrow and maybe on Sunday too (though forecasts disagree on what to expect on Sunday). Saturday seems like the best bet for good weather. ----- Ski area information: Friday 1st April 2022 GALA Yuzawa GALA Yuzawa plans to be open until Thursday 5th May Official snow depth: 280cm Ipponsugi Ipponsugi plans to be open until Sunday 3rd April Official snow depth: 155cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Ishiuchi Maruyama plans to be open until Sunday 3rd April Official snow depth: 200cm Joetsu Kokusai Joetsu Kokusai plans to be open until Sunday 3rd April Official snow depth: 180cm Kagura Kagura (Mitsumata) plans to be open until Sunday 22nd May Kagura (Tashiro) plans to be open until Thursday 5th May Official snow depth: Top: 360cm Base: 260cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Kandatsu plans to be open until Sunday 24th April Official snow depth: 245cm Maiko Snow Resort Maiko plans to be open until Sunday 3rd April Official snow depth: 250cm (top) 85cm (lower) Naeba Naeba plans to be open until Sunday 10th April Official snow depth: 180cm (top) 100cm (base) Nakazato Snow Wood Official snow depth: 185cm NASPA Ski Garden NASPA Ski Garden plans to be open until Sunday 3rd April Official snow depth: 190cm Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 180cm ----- The 2021-2022 season has ended for these ski areas: Iwappara Muikamachi Hakkaisan Yuzawa Kogen Yuzawa Park All ski areas in the region not mentioned in this report are currently closed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Excellent news this morning with snow coming down in true Yuzawa style. It didn't feel quite so excellent yesterday evening. After some fine weather during the day, we got rained on, but it thankfully quite quickly turned into snow and apparently has been snowing all night. Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 60cm - Naeba: 40cm - Yuzawa Kogen: 40cm - Maiko: 50cm - Ishiuchi: 40cm At our measuring point there is 41cm, with just under 25cm to the south in the Shiozawa area of Minamiuonuma. Now this feels more like normal! And with more due over the next few days, conditions are set to get a significant boost. Brilliant. Let's see how long it can continue. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 3rd January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this seas 204cm Posted on Tuesday 3rd January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It has been snowing since the report yesterday, heavily at times. :) Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 20cm - Naeba: 15-20cm - Maiko: 40cm Those numbers for Kagura and Naeba seem surprisingly low, Maiko is more like what we are seeing. By 6pm last night we measured 11cm of fresh snow at our measuring point in town. This morning as of 8:30am there is another 29cm on there, so a total of 40cm since yesterday. This is good! There's a curious lack of the huge icicles you sometimes get on house roofs and stormy winds (in town at least), but these last few days Yuzawa seems more like itself. With a few more days of snow on the forecasts, it looks set to continue building up very nicely. The snow depth numbers that the ski areas are reporting also look more normal now! Sudden heavy snow of course brings dangers and there is increased avalanche risk out there now with Kagura closing a few runs including the Kagura-Tashiro connecting run. The top Number 5 lift will be closed again. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 4th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 41cm Snowfall at base this seas 245cm Posted on Wednesday 4th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was a short period early afternoon yesterday when we saw some blue sky and even a bit of sunshine, but apart from that it has been snowing for most of the time since yesterday and apparently quite heavily overnight. Last night at 6pm we had 8cm at our measuring point and as of 8am this morning there is another 33cm on there. So that's 41cm since yesterday. That's over 120cm over the last three reports. Nice. Here's what ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 50cm - Yuzawa Kogen: 30cm - Maiko: 50cm A few ski areas around the area are again this morning mentioning avalanche and snow slide risk. The top area at Iwappara is closed this morning for that reason. It's natural to be very excited about all this sudden snow, but important to remember the inherent dangers out there while having the fun. There is going to be more snow too... it is snowing now and set to continue through tomorrow. --------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 240cm The Central Area, Northern Area and downhill course are open Ishiuchi Maruyama Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): ?cm Official snow depth: 220cm Night skiing until 8:00pm Iwappara Official snow depth: 140cm Night skiing until 7:00pm Joetsu Kokusai Night skiing until 9:00pm Official snow depth: 210cm (top) Kagura Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 50cm Official snow depth: 250cm (top), 180cm (base) Top lift at Kagura closed as they deal with snow Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 215cm The D lift normally only operates on weekends and holidays Maiko Snow Resort Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 50cm Official snow depth: 250cm (top), 150cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 120cm (base) The top pair lift normally only operates on weekdays and holidays Naeba Official snow depth: 160cm (top), 90cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 220cm Yuzawa Kogen Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: 190cm (top); 110cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 195cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 170cm Yuzawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Wednesday 4th January 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 245cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 17 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 41cm (2nd and 4th January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 123cm reported on 14 days January 2023 snowfall 122cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 5th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 51cm Snowfall at base this seas 296cm Posted on Thursday 5th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. For a while during the day yesterday it was snowing as heavily as it has been this season so far. Really coming down at a fast rate. By the evening, there was 26cm on our measuring point and there's a further 25cm on there this morning. Total of 51cm snowfall. That's more than what ski areas are reporting this morning but... it is what it is! Perhaps it is one of those times when they like to underplay the snowfall. Don't want to scare folks! It is still snowing this morning and will probably continue through the day today, but it's due to start easing off. We might get some clearer skies tomorrow and the day after. The biggest wish is that it remains cold so we can keep the quality of all this beautiful snow. In ski area news, the Tashiro Area and top lift at Kagura are closed today due to wind and weather conditions. They are reporting a temperature of -12C up top there. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway (and the top section of that ski area) is also closed at the start of the day, but may open if conditions allow. The Yuzawa Snow Link connections between Yuzawa Kogen and GALA Yuzawa (Ropeway) and GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama (lift) will not be opening as planned on Saturday (7th January). The reason being given is staffing issues (ie. not enough people). It looks like it is being officially 'delayed', so not clear how that will play out. Buses will be available between the three ski areas. --------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 270cm The Central Area, Northern Area and downhill course are open Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 270cm Night skiing until 8:00pm Iwappara Official snow depth: 160cm Night skiing until 7:00pm Top area currently closed due to avalanche risk Joetsu Kokusai Night skiing until 9:00pm Official snow depth: 250cm (top) Kagura Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: 280cm (top), 200cm (base) Tashiro Area and top lift at Kagura closed due to wind and weather conditions Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 225cm The D lift normally only operates on weekends and holidays Maiko Snow Resort Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 40cm Official snow depth: 270cm (top), 180cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 220cm (top), 160cm (base) The top pair lift normally only operates on weekdays and holidays Naeba Official snow depth: 180cm (top), 100cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm Limited operations due to weather conditions, top area closed NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 250cm Yuzawa Kogen Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: 200cm (top); 120cm (base) Top Kogen area closed at the start of the day due to strong winds Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 225cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Thursday 5th January 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 296cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 18 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 51cm (5th January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 123cm reported on 14 days January 2023 snowfall 173cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 6th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 33cm Snowfall at base this seas 329cm Posted on Friday 6th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just like how sometimes when it doesn't snow, it doesn't seem to want to snow; sometimes, when it starts snowing, it doesn't seem to want to quit! We've measured another 33cm since the report yesterday (10cm by 6pm and a further 23cm overnight). That takes us to over 2m of observed snowfall - at town level - over the last five Yuzawa Now reports. Normal service seems to have resumed! Maiko are reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday; other ski areas 20-30cm. While we thought it might have stopped by now, it is still snowing. It is due to ease off sometime during the day today and there might well be some sunshine tomorrow morning. (Though we might get more snow overnight into Sunday). It looks like Kagura, Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen are all opening as planned this morning after some disruption due to weather yesterday. The top area at Iwappara is still closed due to avalanche risk. There's a lot of snow out there now. --------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 270cm The Central Area, Northern Area and downhill course are open Ishiuchi Maruyama Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: 290cm Night skiing until 8:00pm Iwappara Official snow depth: 180cm Night skiing until 7:00pm Top area currently closed due to avalanche risk Joetsu Kokusai Night skiing until 9:00pm Official snow depth: 270cm (top) Kagura Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 20cm Official snow depth: 280cm (top), 200cm (base) Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 235cm The D lift normally only operates on weekends and holidays Maiko Snow Resort Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 50cm Official snow depth: 290cm (top), 200cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 240cm (top), 160cm (base) The top pair lift normally only operates on weekdays and holidays Naeba Official snow depth: 180cm (top), 100cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 260cm Yuzawa Kogen Fresh snowfall (reported by the ski area): 20cm Official snow depth: 220cm (top); 130cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 235cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 210cm Yuzawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Friday 6th January 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 329cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 19 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 51cm (5th January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 123cm reported on 14 days January 2023 snowfall 206cm reported on 5 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
