It was snowing lightly yesterday, a bit more later on and this morning we awake to a lovely new layer. Kind of 'normal' Geto Kogen, as impressive as it is. With more snow due today as well, so it should be a good day (and beyond). Tree run courses are closed but I wouldn't be surprise if there was some movement on that during the day. (That is purely a guess, not based on any confirmed information). Have a good one! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning! We have fresh snow. Yakebitaiyama are reporting 5cm. Kumanoyu are reporting 10cm. (Why do Japanese ski resorts always seem to report snowfall in units of 5cm? I can never get my head round that. What does an actual 7.5cm end up as? 5cm or 10cm? Actually I think I know the answer to that one...!) Anyway it started later in the day yesterday and has been snowing this morning too - though there's also some breaks in the clouds and even some sun shining through in places. No offense, lovely sun, but we'd like you to take a break while the snow continues please! Having said that, there is some moderate snow coming down over at the Okushiga Kogen area right now. So there's varying conditions this morning depending on which part of Shiga Kogen you are in. Heavier snow is due overnight tonight; hopefully across the entire region. Almost all courses and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open with just a few minor exceptions. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow! It started wet, and it's pretty wet and cohesive now, but getting better and even picking up a bit. Dare I say it, it's Myoko-style out there. Not the heaviest, but a nice change from the recent trends. And really needed; Kurohime is running again (even though they're only reporting 10cm, which I think is less than is actually out there. But thanks for not over-reporting!). Niigata's official report has...OK, I won't jinx it, but over 30cm. So things are definitely going in the right direction. And if we look at the forecast, there is good reason for qualified optimism. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's great to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. The resort is reporting 20cm of fresh up on the top Yamabiko and Uenotaira areas, 10cm at Hikage and Nagasaka and 5cm down at Karasawa. I am measuring 11cm which goes on the report. So it should be good up there. These are not huge amounts of snow yet, of course, and we require more - and there should be more to report tomorrow, with heavier snowfall due overnight tonight. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. I am pleased to see 15-20cm or so of snowfall being reported by a few resorts this morning. On the upper areas. Not so much down here at base, so head up higher to find the goodies. I also note that Tsugaike Kogen are reporting up to 30cm of fresh snow and the Number 1 gate plans to open. Cortina also seems to have had a good refresh with all lifts operating and all courses open this morning. Just going on the numbers, it would seem that there has been more snow in the northern areas. It feels quite cold morning. I'm going to wrap up, head up high and have me some fun. We hope to have more snowfall during today and overnight. Early next week is also looking good for a very cold spell with regular snowfall. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning on this last one of January 2020, and it is another windy one. We were hoping for a bit more snow on the ground but it is just a dusting here at base this morning and not enough to pass my highly scientific rules and allow m to post a cm. There is some very light snow falling in places as I put this report together, but it's not significant and I can only just see it! There is also some breaks in the cloud and blue sky in places too. So a bit of a mixed picture early on. It is a little colder than yesterday but not much. Wind is an issue today again and at the start of the day all of top lifts across the mountain are on hold. Only the base Jumbo lift at Niseko Annupuri, the base lift at Hanazono and two base area lifts at Niseko Village are open in those areas. A bit more of Hirafu looks to be opening at the start of the day including the gondola. That situation might of course change depending on the wind conditions during the day. Hopefully wind will not make itself a nuisance over the coming weekend. I am liking the look of the forecast for around late Monday onwards - there's some serious cold and snow lined up there. Hurray! I will do my usual 'season until now' thoughts/recap and post it in the report on Monday. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -0.6℃, slight snowfall. Benkei cape: ENE13m/s, Kamui cape: NE10m/s, 999hPa, 4.4m waves. The recorded wind speed is the average of 15 min intervals. Instant gusts are a lot stronger today. A strong north easterly wind is blowing around the rim of the current “oval” shape low-pressure system. Although the snowfall is scarce, heavy snowdrifts are developing; reaching up to 60cm at some places and are very unstable. SW facing knolls, cornice slopes and open steep terrains above 800m are at high avalanche risk today. It’s better staying inbounds today. Most gates will be kept closed. Many of the accidents occur in poor weather. Highly wind-affected snowfall forms heavy slabs and are likely to cause a slide. Better not push it too far during bad weather conditions. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. It has started to snow this morning and there's some decently sized flakes falling outside my window just now. Earlier on I would have been posting 0cm for today, but I can now add 1cm. Fingers crossed it'll be piling up. Wind though is affecting the operation of some lifts this morning meaning we have limitations this morning... right now the upper section of the Zao Ropeway and Kurohime quad are on hold. Limited visibility on the mountain too. I suspect quite a few people will decided to soak in an onsen this morning and wait for the weather to calm down. Before that though we do have more snow due through the day today and tonight. Perhaps a fair bit - let us see... Wind is blowing snow around and affecting a number of lifts - looks like Okushiga Kogen, Yokoteyama and Shibutoge are closed, with some other lifts affected. Not that cold. And while snow does seem to be coming down - or is it going up?! - I think I can add 1cm to the report, sort of. Wind is making it difficult. It's not the most pleasant of days to be out there (not for me!) but if you are going I would check before heading out. I think those cheeky Snow Monkeys are going to have a lot of visitors today... Better news is due for Thursday/Friday. I like that 'heavy snow' note on the forecasts. Let's have some of that please. And on a day when we hear of snowfall in places where it doesn't usually fall, I am happy to also report some snow in a place where it most definitely should be falling. Here! This morning 10-15cm of snow is being reported around the resorts this morning and I am stoked to be able to add 10cm myself. It's not that cold at all actually, around 0C at base. Wind is causing some issues though with the top lifts at Happo-one on hold and the top section of the Tsugaike Gondola on hold. Operations at Hakuba Cortina also look rather limited this morning. On the other hand, the Cosmo Four lift at Goryu is back up and running this morning.
