The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning. Ah, fresh snow overnight! Don't you just love it. This morning resorts are reporting around 5cm in base areas and some rather varying amounts from upper areas, the most being reported by Happo-one (25cm at Kurobishi). The Tsugaike guys are reporting 30-40cm in wind-blown areas; icy in others. So yes, wind is an issue this morning. Unfortunately it is stopping the gondola and top areas of Happo-one to be open - so early morning at least we can't get up to that fresh snow. Other resorts appear to be opening as normal though there may be some slower-than-usual lift speeds. I have measured 7cm in my place and backed that up with a few other measurements around base here. Great to see fresh snow. Some may find conditions rather challenging today, but tomorrow clearer skies and sunshine is forecast so should be a good day. It's a holiday for many too. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a wild morning. Quickly moving on from the rain last night, this morning we have blizzard like conditions. Strong westerly winds, visibility limited or just really poor, and lift operations affected. The webcam images below taken around 8am show the situation really. I am recording 7cm of snow, but the wind is really a factor this morning so there's going to be varying amounts. I imagine there will be fair bit more than that in places. And there should be more through the day. Official websites are having connection issues - probably too many people checking them out at the same time and giving the server a headache. As such I can't give you a clear picture of lift operations early on, but it will be limited operations... if at all. I admire (though don't totally understand!) folk who want to venture out on a day like today. It's not for me though, even if the lifts are moving and I'm sure many will be the same. The Avalanche Report below declares today as an onsen day. I'd say it is more like a toast day, but heck... we can be completely wild and gnarly and do both! Kutchan Weather Station: WSW 8.9m/s, -1.4°. 5cm new snow in last 3 hrs. The wind started to pick up last night at 9pm, at 4am it increased significantly, over 30m/s on the coast. Rapid snow drift development was observed over 700m this morning. Snow drifts(heavy soft slabs) are fracturing easily on Feb 22nd warm layer. Today, tomorrow avalanche risk is very high. Once the blizzard calms down and wind speed drops below 10m/s the snow will start to stabilize. Don't push your luck during bad weather. The surrounding mountains are in the same condition. Today is an onsen day, but take care driving. Due to mechanical repairs the avalanche report will be different format from tomorrow. Don't over estimate your equipment, knowledge, experience or skills. Remember knowledge is not experience. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . A burst of snow late afternoon yesterday has resulted in 4cm of new snow at the base of the resort. The slopes are in very nice condition with the snow over the last couple of days. This morning is clear and sunny. Clouds are expected to move in later with some snow in the afternoon. There is a lot of cloud around at the moment but some blue sky as well and the sun has been making itself seen too at times this morning. All lifts are scheduled to be operating as planned this morning. Tomorrow is still looking likely to be rather mild but it should not last too long with snow due again for Sunday. Kutchan Weather Station:-2.2°, 5cm new snow in last 24hrs. We are on the edge of a high pressure system, moderately strong westerly winds that have caused snowdrift development above 800m. With little snow overnight, yesterday's tracks are still visible. From data and observation snowdrifts have stabilized and general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Off-piste snow extremely variable. Be careful falling into cracks or hitting trees. Today's snow is shallow but good and winds have dropped from yesterday. Moiwa Gate 6, the upper Moiwa Bowl area is starting to crack from ground heat, take care. When going out the gates carry a beacon, shovel, probe, short rope and some emergency food. Next winter a beacon and helmet will be compulsory to use the Niseko gates system. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is snowing lightly and there is 5cm of new snow at base, with the resort official report quoting 13cm of new snow at the top of the mountain. The snowfall is forecast to stop in the morning and restart late afternoon. It is calm around the village with no wind. Visibility is a bit restricted at the moment with cloud rolling down the ski resort but this may improve later on. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I was not alone in enjoying a few really good few hours on the mountain yesterday. Found some good amounts of fresh snow up there with snow falling quite consistently too. Clearly more than there is/was down at base; as if often the case of course. I note that Niseko Grand Hirafu have actually bumped up their upper snow depth official number by 25cm since yesterday. Niseko and Annupuri aren't budging theirs just now. In general, I'd always take those official snow depth numbers with a bit of salt. Take a step back, compare with previous season; that's the kind of thing they are useful for. This morning I can report an additional 11cm on the ground by base and it feels a little colder this morning. We are due some milder conditions on Saturday, hopefully to be followed by more of what we like as we approach Monday (winds aside, not keen on them). Anyway, conditions should be a lot of fun once again this morning. I think I might just enjoy a few more hours myself... A weak winter type pressure pattern continues, 40cm of snow drift development on leeward slopes above 800m, peak development at midnight. Below 800m tracks are still visible, above 900m buried. From review of data and input from the patrol and groomers, snowdrifts are expected to stabilize by 8am. The general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. It is recommended to carry a beacon, probe, shovel and a short rope. Wear a helmet. Be careful and avoid having an accident. Some more snow since my report yesterday during the daytime but this morning we have clearer skies and it is calmer, though it didn't get really windy yesterday (or not as much as we were warned it might). But hold on a sec, it's snowing over at Okushiga Kogen. So yes mixed conditions early on but likely to be on the clearer side with the snow easing off. Whatever, wrapped up, it should be a really good morning out there. All areas and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open (with just a few minor exceptions). A bit more fresh - actually, exactly the same as I measured yesterday - has covered all the trees up the hill, so everything is nice and white and wintery looking. The sun is out, which is nice for the views, but there's instant melt on the roads and parking lots. Looks like another warm cycle ahead and then maybe some more snow. No multi-day, heavy falls ahead, though.
