The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After the report yesterday morning, there has been another 15cm of snowfall around town areas. Most of that coming in the morning yesterday. Beyond that it was snowing lightly at times, but not heavily. This morning there is a lot of cloud about and light snow is still falling in places. Again, it's not the kind that is going to be adding more cm. It is currently 0C in town. Over the next few days we might get to enjoy some breaks in the cloud and (especially tomorrow) some sunshine. Fingers crossed it doesn't get too mild. We should be getting more snow around Thursday. It was really great to see the snow yesterday morning and exciting to get out in a good layer of fresh snow. That snowfall really helped the ski areas open up and for things to look (and feel) more normal once again. There's still less of it about than usual, of course, so hopefully we will be on the receiving end of some good snow deliveries over the next few weeks. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good news too, this morning. Kagura, Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort are all reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall. And I have just measured 28cm - and it's snowing quite handily at the moment too. We do have light snow forecast for the day. Would be great if it continued like this for a while. This overnight haul will have helped add some depth and conditions should be good. The top Takenokoyama pair lift at Naeba is now open. And the downhill run at GALA Yuzawa is now open. In fact, we are getting to that point in the season where most ski areas are either fully open or nearly there. As such we'll make a few adjustments to the information presented in the report from tomorrow. (Sometimes too much detail can confuse!) The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It has been snowing on and off since yesterday, though there's not that much to report in terms of new cm. Maiko is reporting up to 15cm with Kagura (-9C temp reported) and Ishiuchi both reporting 5cm, and that's what we have measured at our point in town. It is snowing lightly this morning in a similar fashion and about 0C. The 'heavy snow' being forecast for late tomorrow into the next day looks like it would be a good way to start the new year! On this last day of the year, there's night skiing until 2am at Kandatsu and no doubt various celebrations going on, including fireworks. Things will probably be more lively than they have been the previous few years. The increase in overseas visitors has definitely been noticeable, that is surely to be expected due to the changes this year. Just how many overseas visitors will be around for the season remains to be seen. But, hello and welcome all! :) The ski area list (below) has been simplified to reflect that most ski areas are now mostly or fully open. We have had some light (kind of wet) snowfall early morning, just 1-2cm in places, and light snow is falling now. It is supposed to get heavier later on/tonight and into tomorrow. Some more lifts and runs are opening up as the ski areas do their best to be as open as possible for the busy New Year holidays. It was inevitable as there is hardly any snow on the main Kagura run. Not to worry. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The day is starting with cloud and rain but we are still expecting clear skies and sunshine. Today it might not get warmer than 14C in town. At 7am Kagura were reporting a cold sounding -4C... and 3cm of fresh snow too! From tomorrow, sunshine and a return to warm is very likely as temperatures once again rise to low to mid 20s. That sounds more like Golden Week! One thing we hadn't noticed... GALA Yuzawa have recently installed a rope tow lift next to one of their park areas in the Northern Area. Interesting to see that appear. Three more days for GALA Yuzawa and the Tashiro Area of Kagura. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It is another sunny morning and we are due another warm and pleasant day with temperatures in the mid 20s. With GALA Yuzawa and the Tashiro Area of Kagura enjoying their last day yesterday, only Kagura now remains part open. Looking towards the weekend, tomorrow should also be nice during the daytime and there is a chance of some rain going into Sunday. ----- Kagura is part open. Access via the Mitsumata Ropeway. Mitsumata Ropeway opens at 8:00am on weekdays and at 7:30am on weekends and holidays, and closes at 4:30pm. The Tashiro Ropeway and Tashiro Area are now closed for the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We are now into the last week at Kagura and some changes from this morning. The Mitsumata Area is now closed so at the end of the day you need to get the Mitsumata quad back down to the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway as well as do some walking. Here's how it works: - From the base of the Kagura Gondola take the Mitsumata Number 2 pair lift as normal - From the top of that lift, walk over to the top of the Mitsumata quad lift (about 170m) - Take the Mitsumata quad lift down - Walk over to the top station of the Mitsumata Ropeway (about 230m) - Get the Mitsumata Ropeway back down to base (The ski area can help with their 'carry service' where they take your gear from the Kagura gondola over to the Mitsumata area). Hope that explains it clearly enough! As for the weather, this morning it is cloudy. Hopefully we will get some decent weather this week, and warmer too... it's not particularly warm at the moment! ---------- Kagura is part open with access is via the Mitsumata Ropeway. On the way back from Kagura to Mitsumata you need to take a lift and do some walking as the Mitsumata slope is now closed. Mitsumata Ropeway opens at 8:00am on weekdays and at 7:30am on weekends and holidays, and closes at 4:30pm. Kagura plans to be open for skiing until Sunday 22nd May. The Tashiro Ropeway and Tashiro Area are now closed for the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's 22nd May and the last day of the season for the Kagura ski area. That's two months after the first ski area closed for the season! There is still fairly good snow cover on the main Kagura run, as you can see in the photo below. The weather hasn't been great this last weekend. At 7am this morning Kagura reported rain and a temperature of just +5C. Down in town it probably won't reach 20C today, though the rain has eased off with just a few spots left in places. The day should generally just be cloudy. Hopefully, we will get some nice weather before the rainy season kicks in. Then it's the hot summer. The Fuji Rock Festival will be held at Naeba (29th-31st July). There's some summer skiing in Yuzawa as follows: Kagura (the Mitsumata slope): weekends and holidays between 23rd July and 2nd October (and also 12th and 15th August) GALA Yuzawa: on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays between 22nd July and 28th August And then the beautiful autumn. After that, the countdown to winter. There are now signs that the Japanese government is planning to be easing up on the international border restrictions in the coming weeks and months. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's April and I have some fresh snow to report from higher areas! Kagura is reporting 2cm of snowfall (it's also reporting a strong northerly wind which means that some lift operation changes up there, at least at the start of the day. Both Ropeways appear to be opening though). Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 4-5cm, presumably up at the top of the gondola. There's no cm of snow to report from base and town areas, but thankfully after a day of rain (more than we expected), it's not raining this morning. Roads are damp and it's cloudy early on, but some sun is on the forecast for the day. Currently 2C in town. Sunday is the last day of the season for quite a few ski areas in the region. Beyond that, we will post most specific details about what remains open. Currently the forecast for the weekend is a clear and sunny start tomorrow and maybe on Sunday too (though forecasts disagree on what to expect on Sunday).
