The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. The clouds that we had early morning yesterday cleared up leaving us with blue skies all around. A lovely spring day. I have a really great few hours over in the top area of Hakuba 47/Goryu. Kimochi-ii! This morning it's fine again though a bit paler blue tones - early on anyway. A fine and mild day is expected. The big news I suppose is that the Hakuba Cortina resort has now closed for the season. Otsukaresama deshita. Please enjoy a rest, hard-working staff. For the record, their original plan was to be open until 5th April. It is going to be interesting to see how long the season will continue at the remaining resorts... The other big news, I suppose, is the forecast that is still looking really promising for snow starting from sometime tomorrow through around Tuesday. Cautiously optimistic. There's even some 'heavy snow' mentioned on the forecasts for Monday and Tuesday. Honto ni?! Onegai shimasu. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning and this morning I bring you fresh news of even fresher snowfall. Allow me to rewind, as we enjoyed some beautiful blue skies yesterday. Late night it started snowing. (Hurray!) But it turned into rain. (Doh!) Before turning into snow again. (Hurray!) Come on now, make your mind up. (We much prefer snow, by the way). Anyway, the result is I have 5cm of fresh snowfall observed down here, but it is worth pointing out that the Avalanche Report below is reporting up to 20cm; and also that Niseko Grand Hirafu are reporting 25cm and Hanazono are reporting 30cm. Those are impressive numbers and I'd like to check them out for myself... As I have mentioned before, when it comes to late season there will often be larger differences between what falls down at base and what potentially falls higher up on the mountain. But of course my observations come to you (consistently every day through the season) from base. Apart from the fact that I can't do 'top of mountain' observations, it would mess up consistency if I suddenly switched from base to top. Obviously, not going go do that. ----- Wind is affecting top lifts at the start of the day today. All top lifts (apart from the Hanazono one) on hold as of 8:30am. Annupuri Gondola and the Wonderland Chair at Niseko village also. Let's checking! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Base: 0°, 20cm new snow in last 12 hrs, wet snow. Moiwa 800m:NW 309deg 8.5m/s, -1.9°, snowing, poor visibility, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: W 267deg 9.3m/s, -4.4°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: WNW 280deg 3.6m/s, -3.9°. Niseko Village 900m: W 267deg 4.3m/s, -3.0°. Hirafu 1000m :ESE 103deg 0.7m/s, -3.8°. Hanazono 720m: NNW 343deg 4.5m/s, -1.8°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: W11m/s. Kamui Cape SW 18m/s, 1005hPa, wave 2.3m. A cold front passed through after midnight with very strong winds(above 25m/s) above 800m causing rapid cornice and snowdrift development. Winds have started to drop since 5am. From observation and data there has been unstable snow drift deposits up to 60cm on south facing knolls above 800m which are fracturing easily on weak layers. Avalanche risk is high. Gate openings are yet to be decided. Below 700m the snow is reset with wet snowdrifts in the trees, however be careful in steep areas like gully sidewalls where heavy surface avalanches from the 12th Mar layer are easily occurring. Less than 30 deg forested slopes are fun to ride. Avoid riding above or over knolls. The risk of full depth avalanches is rising in Osawa, Kozan no Sawa, Higashi One and Mizuno no Sawa. Until the snow stabilizes best to avoid the valley bottoms. Surface avalanches during spring storms run long distances and have devastating power. On March 13, 1965, an avalanche accident occurred in the Satsunai River in the Hidaka Mountains under similar conditions, where 6 people died. Always be cautious without overconfidence. There's some snow to report to you this morning and the lower slopes are - perhaps only for a short time - are looking freshly white again. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Morning from Naeba. There's a slight dusting of snow down to base this morning, just about 1cm so hopefully a few more than that higher up. And it is quite windy too. There is a lot of cloud about but some blue sky too and the sun breaking through the cloud casting shadows onto the mountain. We can probably expect fairly clearer conditions until tomorrow. Looking ahead it would seem that winter-like conditions should be back over the weekend and perhaps into Monday. Occasionally strong winds with visibility ok lower down but perhaps more limited higher up on the mountain. Note that the quad lift is now closed for the season. The Number 2 gondola is scheduled to be open on weekends and holidays through until 29th March. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There is 2cm of new snow that has landed on the ground overnight. A light to moderate wind is blowing around the base area and the day is partly cloudy. Conditions through the day are expected to remain cloudy with no precipitation. Temperatures are cooler that the last few days and it is currently -2c and the high will go up to around +1c. On slopes there will be a few centimeters of that new powder on top of a firm base. The warm temperatures and rain of the last couple of days have had a large effect on the lower slopes with the ground starting to show through. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow on the surface today, not much but it does make things look nice and white again. Up high the trees are white again, which is always good to see, and there might have been (as often happens) more snow mid-mountain than at the base or the summit. Pretty sunny out there, though, although there are some fluffy, almost summer-like clouds over the mountains to the south and east. Should be sunny and warm again as the freezing level makes another climb tomorrow, but "only" to 1800 meters. Then, could it be a few days of snow ahead? My snow-removal machines are getting rusty waiting for some work here, so they'd be happy. Machines having the Buddha nature and all that (thank you Gary Snyder, our Beat reference for the season). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 6cm of fresh snowfall! Hurray! It feels colder this morning, and indeed it is colder. I note also that Hanazono appear to be reporting up to 20cm on the upper areas there and there's up to 15cm being reported in the Avalanche Report too. That all surely sounds good and worth investigating. And, more snow is possible at times over the next few days. As this report goes live just before 8:30am, there is lots of blue sky and the sun is out. Some cloud around and the top of Mt Yotei is clouded over. ----- People continue to send in specific questions to SnowJapan regarding things like hotel, transport and other general Niseko tourism specifics. I truly sympathise with all the questions but please understand that I am here to post weather reports. So once again may I suggest that you direct questions to the people who put your holiday together and/or the place that you are staying at. Dealing with guests and all related issues is what those people do, and what you pay them for, so they will surely be able to help you with such details. Official information sources are probably a good idea to keep an eye on too. Many businesses are mentioning various precautionary measures such as staff wearing masks, being extra vigilant with cleaning guest areas, etc. I would recommended checking with individual businesses for information on how they are dealing with the situation. Things here are very quiet, but the ski resorts do remain open and the lifts are moving. We surely are living in some strange times. Annupuri 1100m: W 280°8.7m/s, -7.8℃. Yu no sawa 1000m: NNW 343°3.2m/s, -7.2℃. Village 900m: WNW 289°2.6m/s, -6.1℃. Hirafu 1000m: no wind data, -7.4℃. Hanazono720m: NW 319°5.3m/s, -4.4℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NNW9m/s, Kamui cape: WNW8m/s, 1012hPa, 2.7m waves. A moderate north to north-westerly wind is blowing above 800m elevation and making snowdrifts and cornices develop in leeward slopes. 10-15cm new snow has blanketed the slopes in the trees under 700m. Looking at test results, shallow surface slab avalanches are likely to occur in steep leeward slopes due to the uneven wind and temperature transition. All gates are scheduled to open. Ask the ski patrol’s advice and be prepared/equipped for the backcountry. The snow conditions looks pretty good today. Gate11 will be closed from today as climax avalanches have started to occur in Mizuno no sawa. Do not duck ropes to enter the area. Avalanche control operations will still carry on. Patches of 50cm thick snowdrifts are present in south facing slopes above 1000m elevation and human triggered surface slab slides are very likely to occur in slopes steeper than 30°. Backcountry tourists should consider the hazards and plan their hiking/riding routes carefully. Guides are responsible for the party’s safety. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have ever so slightly over 4cm of fresh snowfall to report to you this morning. Hurray! Hopefully that translates into a bit more higher up on the slopes to play in this morning. Some of that really light snow falling as I have been writing this report but not enough for me to feel comfortable awarding a 'light snow' icon this morning. All lifts should be moving as planned this morning. Japan is going to really get into full-on 'spring-mode' tomorrow and Tuesday with some very mild conditions lined up, but the good news is that it will be cooling down again beyond that with the chance of some more snow. Though I wouldn't be holding out for big numbers! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Base: -1°, 5cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: SE 140deg 2.2m/s, -2.8°, cloudy. Annupuri 1100m: SE 153deg 2.4m/s, -5.2°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: SW 229deg 2.7m/s, -4.8°. Niseko Village 900m: SSE 167deg 3.1m/s, -4.2°. Hirafu 1000m :S 188deg 6.3m/s, -4.9°. Hanazono 720m: SSW 196deg 6.1m/s, -2.9°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: S 8m/s. Kamui Cape SSW 13m/s, 1020hPa, wave 0.8m. We are currently under a high pressure system and the weather is calm. Light snow is falling above 700m and visibility is poor. A strong south west wind is blowing at higher levels. There is no obvious avalanche risk and all gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before leaving the ski resort through the gates. Don't forget your obento. Expect the temperatures to rise during the day and the snow to get heavy. The snow should be good on and off-piste in the morning though. It is a cold start but it will get to be milder during the day and with the fresh snow we got yesterday (the number reported today is since my morning report yesterday), conditions should be good. Cloudier skies forecast for later today and tomorrow before more sunshine on Monday. All areas and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open (with just a few minor exceptions). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning from Hirafu base. This morning we have light (to moderate just before, eased off again right now) snow and moderate wind, though less than yesterday. I am measuring 9cm of fresh snow down at base and I note that both Hirafu and Hanazono appear to be reporting 15cm on upper slopes. As of 8:30am the top lifts at Hanazono, Village and Annupuri are on hold but all other lifts are scheduled to be running as planned. That may well change of course. We are due a period of warm-up from Sunday through perhaps Tuesday; forecasts appear to show rain on Tuesday before a drop in temperatures again from around Wednesday... and hopefully some snowfall. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -2℃, 10cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: N 4°2.2m/s, -5.6℃. Annupuri 1100m: NNW 334°4.8m/s. Yu no sawa: NE 46°4m/s, -7.9℃. Village 900m: N 6° 3.4m/s, -7.1℃. Hirafu 1000m: N 7°, 11m/s, -8℃. Hanazono 720m: N 1°7.3m/s, -5.9℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NE12m/s, Kamui cape: ESE3m/s, 1012hPa, 3.2m waves. The storm has passed and the weather is calming down. The wind’s peak was around 2am, blowing over 20m/s at 1000m and higher elevation. According to observations, testing and reports, the snowpack is starting to stabilize. Gates are scheduled to open, but will be delayed. Snowdrifts over 1m thickness have developed in leeward spots above 500m elevation. The avalanche risk is high in open steep slopes, leeward knolls and cornice slopes. 50+cm thick slides are likely to occur, better stay away from those aspects. Please be prudent and make conservative decisions. Ride one by one and do not stay put in gullies. Have you switched your beacon on? Ask the ski patrol some advice and don’t push it too far today. We strongly hope there are no accidents happening today. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. Fresh snow to report to you this morning. The official numbers (not all and) just increasing by a bit but I have measured 12cm. I would expect more on the mountain and a friend of mine is mentioning more than 20cm - which would be very good. After today, it looks like we are going to have our fair share of sunshine. Possibly more than our fair share with things warming up Japan-wide particularly around Tuesday. Don't expect any snowfall before Wednesday at the earliest, but hopefully we are not done for the season yet in terms of fresh... So sunny over the weekend.
