But seasons greetings to you all. 10+cm of fresh snow on the ground this morning with 15-20cm being reported from higher up on the mountain. Today should be a mix of light snow and clearer skies at times with perhaps a similar pattern continuing tomorrow. From today the Number 1 Gondola is open again... so all lifts moving. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning to you all and Merry Christmas. Living in Japan for a long time, Christmas has gradually lost some of the meaning it once had for me, but it feels weirder than usual this year. There's usually various events for Christmas with, for example, Santa skiing on the slopes and giving presents to kids and stuff like that, but I don't seem to be able to find that kind of information this year. It might well be happening to some degree, but it's not being shouted about as usual. That's my observation, anyway. We had to put up with some rain yesterday I'm afraid. Booooo. Never welcome once the snow starts and always a worry when the temperatures get milder, but we can't do much about it. The better news is that there is 7cm of fresh snowfall from overnight here at base village level as of 8am, and it definitely feels colder too. Not a thick layer of fresh then on top of what we had yesterday, but it should be building up. It is snowing quite nicely at the moment and we should now be getting back to sustained colder conditions and consistent snowfall. Not much of the mountain can be seen as I write this and it looks like visibility is going to be rather limited this morning. Wherever you are in the world, and whether Christmas means much to you or not so much, best wishes to you all. There is only a little new snow on the 23rd Dec layer, however snowdrifts growth is up to 40cm. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. A weak NW wind is blowing at the Hirafu ridgeline (1200m). Light winds have reset Mikaeri leeward slope. Snow is good. Below 600m bushes are still thick and the creeks are not covered. Beware hidden stumps and creeks off piste. Broken ribs are a season ender. The groomers are in good condition but visibility is bad and its hard to see the contours. Be careful going too fast and hitting something. Only Gate 6 is open at the moment but all gates are expected to open before New Year. Powder will be OK today. Don't over estimate your skills, make cautious decisions . Wear your helmet and beacon. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The snow is back and coming down moderately. There is 5cm accumulation of very light powder at base level and more on the mountain itself. Temperatures were "warm" at -2c yesterday, but today it will spike up to +3c around midday and then there is the possibility of the snow turning to rain later in the afternoon. Kitanomine Zone is open today with all runs accessible. All lifts on the mountain are operating except for the snow escalators on both sides. Night skiing also starts tonight on the Prince Romance lift. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A few cm of snow on the ground this morning from overnight and light snow now falling. Hopefully this will be the start of another run of days where we get a consistent delivery of fresh snow. While it will remain relatively mild today (low positive numbers at base), temperatures are due to drop quite a bit from tomorrow (remaining in minus number territory). Some things from Niseko Annupuri: They are saying that their special night skiing session on 31st December, from 8:00am until 11:00pm, will be free to use. Yey! Their 'Annupuri First Run' special opening will be happening again this season - on 1st-3rd and 9th-11th January. On those dates the Gondola will be operating from 7:20am until 8:20am so you can get some runs on groomed slopes with no tracks. Yours for 1500 yen. I'll try to mention the above type of news if and when I notice it as I check information each morning. Time for some toast. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Cape Benkei: SSW3m/s. Kutchan Town: +1.3℃, E2.2m/s, 1017.5hPa. 10pm last night a low pressure front moved through dropping 2-5cm snow. From observation the 23rd Dec snow surface will become a weak layer in the future snowpack. Village Patrol reports t cracks forming around the Mizuno no Sawa Super Station due to the rapid increase in the amount of snow over the past week. Cracks form on steep slopes from tension in the snowpack releasing. Be aware that these can develop into full depth avalanches. And be careful falling into them because they cant be seen from above. Following the low pressure system cold weather will come bringing savage conditions on the mountain. Large amounts of wind blow snow will accumulate in gullys. In blizzard conditions with winds over 25m/s, snow drifts(slabs) that have rapidly grown are structurally unstable and will easily collapse causing surface avalanches. It is a good idea to stay out of leeward valleys when the snow is drifting, even on the roads down in the valley. Most avalanche accidents happen during bad weather. Pay attention to how the snow is falling. It was basically just a cloudy day yesterday. This morning we are expecting mostly cloudy again perhaps with a few sprinkles of snow but certainly nothing major. It feels relatively mild as well this morning. Snow should be back by tomorrow night though note some forecasts seem to be saying there's a chance of some rain lower down base. Hopefully not. Lots of cloud around early on but there's increasing blue sky up there and it's bright. Should be a good out there this morning. Current temperature is -5c and today will be significantly warmer than it has been recently with the high rising to -2c. It is snowing lightly with a light breeze. The snow is expected to stop and the next significant snow front is Thursday. With clear sky above and plenty of fresh snow it will be a great ski day. All lifts on Furano Zone are operating except the snow escalator. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . So the snow eased off during the day yesterday and we got to actually see some of the mountain! Since yesterday the ski area reports 7-8cm of snow on their upper Yamabiko and Uenotaira areas. This morning there is a lot of cloud around but we might just get some sun today and the clouds might clearing somewhat, with sunshine forecast for tomorrow. (I note that over in Madarao there are blue skies already). It is chilly this morning bit going to be milder as well over the next few days - let's hope not too much. We should be back to snow and colder conditions from Thursday onwards. As we approach Christmas and the New Year holidays, things are quieter than usual... as you might expect, given all the circumstances. It will be interesting to see how the holiday period turns out with increasing requests from authorities for restraint (especially in Tokyo and other populated regions) as the coronavirus numbers stubbornly don't go down. I have been out a few times so far and have been pleased to see many (most?) people wearing face coverings and there are measures to try and promote the social distancing thing. If you are able to be here, let's all do what we can to try and get this thing gone. Someone asked about the 'fresh snowfall recorded by the resort' numbers I list below. The ski resort publishes a number twice a day... usually early morning (for snowfall since the previous afternoon) and mid afternoon (for snowfall since the morning). The number in my list below is those two numbers added together. I try to do that second check each day. Apologies if I miss it some days - in which case I will specifically mention it.
