I'm dragging myself away from the news from around the world this morning, trying to forget it and just think about nice things. Like fluffy snow. And nature. And cute animals. And toast. But anyway, I'll get to my duties... There is just a dusting of snow overnight (though I note the ski areas appear to be reporting a uniform 10cm) and it feels quite calm at the moment, but things are going to get revved up by the end of today with some potentially heavy snow along with some strong winds are forecast. It is another cold morning and due to get colder still. All lifts appear to be starting their day as planned this morning. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Cape Benkei:E6m/s. Cape Kamui: NNE3m/s, 1009hPa, wave 0.7m. Hanazono 1000m: -13.2℃, N3.3m/s. Hanazono 720: -10.7℃, NNW3.0m/s. Yu no Sawa 1100m: -13.14, N3.0m/s. Mizuno no Sawa 900m: -10.6℃, NNE3.03m/s. Moiwa 800m: -10.6℃, NNE3.0m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -13.5℃, WSW speed n/a. Kutchan Town: -14℃, NE1.3m/s, snow depth 131cm, 1010.2hPa. Moiwa base: -12, 1cm snowfall in last 12hrs, calm, good visibility. No new snowfall preceding the low pressure front moving into the area, the seas and mountains are both calm. A NE wind will pick up on the mountain today followed by a strong north westerly change bringing snow. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please respect the patrol's decisions. The mountain got all tracked up yesterday, be careful today getting caught up in old tracks. Be careful falling, hitting trees, The snow is good on and off piste today. Snow conditions change everyday, just because it was good yesterday don't mean it will be good today. Always be cautious. From the snowfall transition and observation expect a Jan 7th layer in the snowpack. Yesterday over 500 people went out of bounds with no accidents reported. Everyone - thank you. Only about 50% of people are wearing helmets and beacons. Those people not wearing them please start, they can save your life. Be careful of a sudden change in weather. Add in some light snow earlier in the morning. Usually on a morning like this we end up with generally clearer skies. I predict a day of fine weather. And then snow from later tomorrow. Heavy in some places, but some forecasts show us not getting the bulk of that. But we shall see. There are some stronger winds forecast for tomorrow as well. There is still quite a lot of cloud around but it feels like today might clear up. It should be a fine day to be out on the mountain. Heavy snow is due once again probably starting from later in the day or tonight tomorrow. Things might get windy too. Interestingly we don't seem to have had as much windy conditions going on this season so far, even when it was snowing heavily. That might change for the upcoming delivery! Just 10cm or so this morning as we have enjoyed some less extreme conditions since yesterday, with about 5cm of that overnight. This morning as you can see from the photo below, a lovely sunrise and clear skies. Beautiful morning. Clouds are due to move in later on and we're expecting more snow tomorrow. Official snow depth numbers have changed quite a bit today. Not sure why. But they don't really matter. It's the fresh snow that matters now. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning Annupuri is reporting 10cm of fresh snow while Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting around 25cm. I am measuring 12cm to add to my report and the snow continues. As I speak light snow though it has been heavier at times. We can expect more of the same... snow, limited visibility. I am pleased to be reporting not much wind again. In some seasons pesky wind has been one of the most annoying part of a Niseko season, but we're not seeing much of that this time round. Well, so far! I like it. The forecast for the coming week still shows consistent snowfall lined up each day. All gates should be open. There is very little atmospheric pressure gradient, the sea and mountains are calm. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before going out of bounds. Do not spend time in the valley bottom. Avalanches come from above with surface avalanches travelling at more than 100km/hr. There is no time to escape. Be careful accidentally triggering an avalanche by stimulating a cornice or traversing under one. Ride one by one. Is your beacon turned on? Got your probe and shovel? Helmet on? Looks like a powder paradise out there today. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a nice calm morning with a high cloud layer that is blocking most of the sun from getting through. Overnight there has been a good dump of snow, and this measure 15cm at base level. It has stopped snowing for now but it is likely it will restart later in the morning. We are starting the day with -13c and the high will go up to -9c. All lifts are scheduled to operate except Kitanomine Snow Escalator. Night skiing is until 7:30pm on both Furano and Kitanomine Zones. It is a cloudy morning with light snow falling higher up early on and it seems we are due a few days of calm conditions. Decent snowfall is forecast once again from Thursday and there's a good chance of some large numbers too.
