Running a little later than usual today, because I skied the best powder I can remember in years yesterday, got off the mountain rather late and then spent an evening clearing out all the snow that fell through the day yesterday. So I'm tired, slightly dehydrated and very happy on this bluebird day. Should still be great snow out on the mountain for a while until that sun warms things up. And, of course, always good on the resorts. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It's snowing still and this morning Hanazono and Hirafu are reporting 20-30cm of fresh snowfall, with 10cm being reported at the other two areas. New snow is good, of course!, but I'm afraid wind is still an issue this morning on the mountain. The top lifts at Hirafu and Annupuri are on hold and the Niseko Annupuri gondola has yet to get going. Other than that all other lifts appear to be starting the day. Forecasts seem to be showing the snow (and hopefully wind too) easing later in the day. Tomorrow looks set to be a short mild spell - even bringing us some rain (booo) - though happily that does not long lasting with colder temperatures coming back inform Tuesday... and regular snow. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report 6:25am Benkei cape: NNW17m/s, Kamui cape: W15m/s, 1015hPa, 2.0m waves. Hanazono1000m: -13.9℃, ESE5.7m/s. Hanazono720m: -11.2℃, NNW５.2m/s. Moiwa800m: -11.8°C, NNE15.1m/s. Annupuri1100m: -14.6℃, WNW8.5m/s, Yu no Sawa 1100m: -14.0℃, NNW5.7m/s, Mizuno no Sawa top: -13.2℃, NW6.2m/s. Kutchan town: -6.3℃, W5.0m/s, 157cm snow depth, 1016.9hPa. A strong north westerly wind is still blowing at the edge of the high pressure system. 25m/s gusts were recorded at Moiwa 800m at 6am. 50cm wind-affected but soft snowpack have formed mainly around 600-700m elevation. Evaluating from this morning’s observations and weather transition, the avalanche risk in areas under tree-line (<800m) is lowering, however it will remain high in leeward (SE) aspect slopes in alpine areas (>800m) during the morning. Better not rush off-piste even if the chair-lifts start running. Gates opening is yet to be determined. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. The snow is moderately dense enough not to touch the bottom. The snow in the tree-runs is good. Do not drop into knolls and open steep slopes at once, ride one by one and do not clusterat the bottom of the gullies. Today is a good day but caution is required. Have you switched on your beacon? This morning it is snowing again but it's probably going to do something similar with the snow forecast to not last much beyond around lunchtime. Yakebitaiyama are reporting 10-15cm of fresh snowfall; Kumanoyu less at 5cm. Tomorrow will probably start sunny and it is going to be a fair bit milder before we get back to more cold - and more snow around Tuesday. More snow falling now. It was pretty windy earlier in the morning, with some blowing snow, but that seems to have tapered off a bit, although there still is a breeze coming in, now from the north. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday the Niseko Village gondola did get moving but the top lifts and the other two gondolas remained closed (well, as far as I can tell). Pesky winds! I was kind of expecting to be able to report more snow than I am able to this morning. Perhaps there has been more snow but the wind has been blowing it around. Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting 5-10cm so perhaps there is a layer to be enjoyed, though it might be uneven. Actually this morning it didn't feel too windy down here at base when I was out a while ago - but the top lifts are the dreaded purple colour on the resort map... meaning they're suspended/on hold. The Annupuri Gondola is not opening up as planned at the start of the day but the Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village is operating (at a reduced speed) and the Hirafu Gondola is up and running. We are expecting snow through the day. Perhaps less so tomorrow but consistent snowfall still on the forecast for the coming week. Just one more report for January 2021! Evaluating from the past 12h weather transition and observations, the snowdrifts formed by the southerly wind are now stable and the general avalanche risk during the morning is low. However, the hazard level will rise as new snowdrifts start to develop through the afternoon. Snow that piled up under calm weather is less likely to slide than the snow that’s been affected by strong wind. If everybody acknowledges this fact as a common sense and becomes prudent towards storms, accidents will be less likely to occur. Avalanches are not the only hazard in winter mountains. There are many inherent risks involved in winter activities and there will never be a 100% safe condition. Gates opening are undetermined, please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. We strongly recommend wearing a helmet and carrying avalanche equipment (beacon, shovel, probe). The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Well it really hit last night with snow storms being experienced across the western side of Japan. It was very windy last night so snow drifts make it seem like more has fallen. It is still chucking it down, however, the forecast has changed from heavy to light tonight so we must be getting it earlier than expected during the day. Higher up it is very windy and, with wind chill, reportedly around -25C. The Zao Ropeway lower section has now opened but the second stage is shut. We (and the other resorts) really needed this snow and it should be enough to cover those awful hard areas which had built up during the end of last week leading into the early part of the week paving the way for a really good day tomorrow when the sun is expected to be out. Here's what the ski areas are reporting: Kumanoyu: 20cm Yakebitaiyama 30cm It's a really cold morning. Still a lot of cloud with snow falling in places and quite windy conditions too... enough to affect some lifts, though most areas look to be open. Tomorrow should be less windy and then on Monday we're due some sun. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello from Hakuba on this cold Saturday morning. Some rather different and odd looking snowfall numbers being reported (or should that be 'not reported'?) from around the ski areas this morning... I am guessing that wind might well be a factor there, but up to 40cm is being reported from upper areas. I sure like the sound of that. And you can of course see the numbers below. Since I started putting the report together there are more breaks in the cloud and it is actually sunny in places. If we do get continued snow during the day, we can probably expect the light snow that is lingering in higher areas this morning. Wind seems to be affecting upper lifts at Happo-one at the start of the day and the upper section of the Tsugaike Gondola is on hold. There were some wind related issues at 47 too but that has cleared. Forecasts show the wind getting less as the day goes on so hopefully they will be opening up.
