It's cold, the snow is lovely. Fresh, light, and lots of it. As always, probably more higher up. Visibility is not great but conditions should be excellent out there. Light to moderate snow forecast through today and maybe tomorrow too, and then from Thursday clearer skies look likely. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Still foggy down to base and today is cold (about -10C at base). Although the snow is light, it is accumulating, albeit not a huge amount, but every centimetre counts. Lower down, there does not seem to be any wind but, reported to be variable higher up. Tomorrow should be clearer as well as on Thursday which is a national holiday in Japan. The long weekend appears to be in for some good weather if anyone is still contemplating coming up (bear in mind that many places may be already full) but there may be a rainy spell on Sunday afternoon (then followed by snow in the evening). Check out the snowfall numbers todays winner of the 'most reported snowfall' award, Cortina: 30-40cm. Other ski areas reporting less, but still some healthy numbers on the mountain. It is a cold morning and the earlier light snowfall has now eased off. It has got a little brighter as well. I wonder if we might see breaks in the cloud and even some sun. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Snow yesterday - along with a break in it during the afternoon - and more overnight. Result: the ski area this morning is reporting up to 40cm of snowfall on the upper areas, so along with the 14cm it reported yesterday afternoon that is 54cm since yesterday morning. Similarly 25-42cm on lower areas. I have measured a solid 45cm myself. (It's actually night and light, not really 'solid'). It is a cold morning, right now Thermometer-kun tells me it is -4C, and the snow clouds should remain over Nozawa for the day though probably just light snow. There are some signs that it might be getting brighter as I write this. By tomorrow we will have clearer skies and possibly a day of sunshine. Madness! (In a good way). Sometimes, the snow that Geto Kogen gets might seem to be a bit ridiculous. I get that some people might question it. But, it really does happen this way. If you love deep powder conditions, this is your places. If that is not your preference and you want lots of sunshine... perhaps not!! If you do love that deep powder though, be prepared and be careful. Things are due to calm down again with a break in the snow around Thursday/Friday. If I didn't have my ruler, a consistent place to do the check, and hadn't actually tried to wade out through today's snowfall, I probably wouldn't have thought we got as much snow as we did. Then again, it was blowing like crazy last night, with snow falling heavily all through the night. It was coming down hard early this morning (and yes, we were up early to clear that snow!), although it's really slowed down now as I file the report. It's going to be super tough to climb today, and I would be really concerned about snow offpiste. Real chances for big sluffs that could carry you into bad places (that snow is really unsettled, heavy as it is). Great snow, so enjoy powder on the uncrowded ski areas this morning! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We start the week with loads of snow with 25-35cm being reported by ski areas this morning and the Avalanche Report is giving us 40cm. (I'm guessing the '3cm' from Niseko Village is just a case of information not being updated!) I have just measured 26cm at my point. It's cold down at -9C. I see Annupuri (almost always the coldest reported number in a morning) is reporting a temperature of -20C at their peak. So snow conditions should be very nice indeed this morning and there's a line of people waiting for first lifts. Right now light snow continues to fall. Visibility is limited in places but there are actually some breaks in clouds away from the mountain nearby. Even if it eases off, the snow shouldn't be far away over the next few days. Those needing some clearer skies and sun might have to wait until late week before we get any of that. Having a bit of a moan about rain (and perhaps wind) seems very reasonable, but I think we should never be negative about precious snow falling from the skies! It's a weekday so the Holiday 1 and Swinging Monkey lifts at Hirafu and the Jumbo Number 3 at Annupuri are not operating this morning. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Pretty much the same as yesterday which only started to clear partially near the end of the afternoon. The fog is right down to base. Visibility is generally ok but some parts of the mountain it is hard to see what you are riding on (look ahead more than usual rather than directly down). Below is photo of a skier on the top of the Kurohime Giant for perspective. Winds are light to moderate in places. The new snow is nice to ride on and, depending where you are, can be thicker due to the wind so search it out if you like powder runs. It is still snowing but very lightly and likely to continue throughout the day. I was out of town yesterday but have come back to some fresh snow on the ground and reports of 20-35cm of fresh snow being reported by the ski areas on upper areas. Sounds great. It is still snowing now here in the village and of course higher up. More snow is likely today and particularly overnight tonight and through into tomorrow morning. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A good old traditional 30cm or so of fresh snow here in Nozawa this morning. (Conveniently allowing me to and perhaps cheekily sweep away the less than fab weather we got in the afternoon yesterday. Naughty). 20-35cm of fresh is being reported by the ski area and my measurement here at base is 28cm. It is -3C now and snowing lightly. Naski has been out for 30 minutes or so and is currently proudly wearing a light dusting 'snow hat'. We are forecast snow through the day today and tomorrow, with the heaviest over that period due tonight. It looks like the Kamoshika course is closed this morning and the Rinkan course is going to be closed for an undetermined time today as they do some checks over there. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Another Monday morning and a further large amount of snowfall. The resort this morning is saying that there has been over 60cm of snow on upper areas, with 40cm at base - a large part of that coming overnight and after some more spots of rain before it turning to snow too. It is not particularly cold (relatively) this morning, -1C, and hopefully will be getting colder again. Snow is due over the next few days with a break in the clouds likely come later week. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine this morning!!! Actually, no. I'm kidding. It's limited visibility and snowing has started falling again this morning. It's coming down really nicely just now too. Nice big flakes, looking all fluffy. Quite cold, not mad cold, and getting colder tomorrow. All lifts across the mountain look set to be moving as planned. Yey. ----- I realised yesterday that I hadn't mentioned the Sapporo Snow Festival this time round. Bonkers period of time that we are currently all living through, as you might expect there's no normal Sapporo Snow Festival happening this season. Instead, this year they are doing some 'online event' thingies. I must admit to not really looking into it myself. We can only hope that come this time near year, there will be something more like normal.
