  • Myoko Now: Thursday 18th February 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 31cm Snowfall at base this season 1231cm Posted on Thursday 18th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Once again, we didn't get the massive snows that were promised, while the coastal cities got pounded with snow. Not that we didn't get some nice snow, which we needed after the melting of the warm spell. And it is still snowing, thankfully without the high winds that were also a possibility. Things can change, of course.... There is a much higher avalanche risk right now, too. One local forecaster found some pretty unstable conditions on the east face of Mt. Maeyama, so today might be a good day to exercise a little caution, stay on lower-angle slopes and in the denser forests if you do head off from the resorts. • Zao Now: Wednesday 17th February 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this season 350cm Posted on Wednesday 17th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Something for everyone today after yesterday's blizzards and rain the day before. Although from afar the viz looks poor, ground viz is fine although yellow lenses would be beneficial. You can see across the Chuo basin. It is snowing light to moderate - after 30 seconds on the chairlift I was covered in sugar dust. Winds can be light or none at all. There is powder and powdered slopes of various depths where you want to ride again and again and again and again... There are slopes though that still have a light crunch under the powder but nothing to moan about. The exception is the Hahnenkam C course off the Onsen no.4 quad which is mostly sheet ice. Enjoy what is a great day for riding (but not for touring with the camera out). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a windy one. But since then there are some really good fresh snowfall numbers to report to you this morning. Tsugaike reporting 50cm of snowfall; Happo-one reporting 40-46cm and other numbers around 30-40cm on upper areas of the mountains. There's a good 20cm down at base too. Excellent. It's snowing now and more snow due through tomorrow. Yey! Hakuba Iwatake seem to be updating new snowfall numbers from their Mountain Side. I will check those and report on them each morning. (Added to the list below from today). The Hakuba Happo-one Fire Festival is going ahead this year, from Friday through Sunday. There's going to be torchlit skiing and bonfire over on the Nakiyama area as well as fireworks from 8pm on Saturday. The poster says 'Happo Heats Up - 3 Days! Hot! Red! Chilli!'. Personally I'd much prefer if things remain rather cold and chilly through next month, rather than be hot and chilli. ----- Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: - Kurobishi: 40cm - Usagidaira: 46cm - Nakiyama: 20cm Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 330cm - Usagidaira: 275cm - Nakiyama: 100cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall: - Summit: 40cm - Base: 20cm Official snow depth: - Top: 330cm - Base: 130cm Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: - Upper: 35cm - Iimori: 5cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 320cm - Iimori: 115cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: - Summit: 30cm - Base: 25cm Official snow depth: - Top: 287cm - Base: 195cm Tsugaike Kogen Reported snowfall: - Summit: 50cm Official snow depth: - Top: 327cm - Base: 80cm Hakuba Iwatake Reported snowfall: - Mountain Side: 20cm Official snow depth: - Top: 210cm - Base: 60cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: - 200cm Sanosaka Official snow depth: - Top: 160cm - Base: 90cm Hakuba Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Wednesday 17th February 2021 Total snowfall at base so far 385cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 41 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 32cm (17th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 150cm reported on 12 days January 2021 snowfall 165cm reported on 19 days February 2021 snowfall 70cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday felt a bit strange, considering the forecasts and then what we got. I was around base areas in the afternoon and there was some sun though cloud though limited visibility remained up top. But perhaps not the snow we were expecting. There has been about 10cm of fresh overnight down here and the ski area is reporting around on the upper areas since yesterday morning. It is snowing lightly this morning and we hope for more cm through today and tomorrow. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto. Geto doesn't really do half measures. The snow is back in style after some pretty mad conditions starting yesterday. The ski area is reporting a ridiculous 115cm of fresh snowfall on upper areas. 115! Down at base it's 'only' 80+cm, with a large chunk of that coming overnight. And it is snowing now with more due today and tomorrow. Feeling colder too, as you might expect, and not as windy so lifts should be moving. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is really starting to fall now, although the total accumulation up to this report is not that great. Crazy winds yesterday mid-day: suddenly the trees exploded into clouds of blowing snow, and the mountains had big ribbons of flying snow heading up the slopes. Quieted down later in the day as the snow started to fall again. • Zao Now: Tuesday 16th February 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 337cm Posted on Tuesday 16th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . It rained all day yesterday with a break at the afternoon and then started again late night. At some time during the wee hours of the morning it started snowing lightly, but, along with it came gales. As such, it is difficult to really estimate how much snow did fall. It started snowing again at 09:00 but it is blizzard conditions out there. The good news is that the snow should continue falling over the next couple of days but not as heavy as originally forecasted. It is, therefore, really grim out there with the cloud very low and below base. The slush became ice and, with only a small layer currently on top, combined with the strong winds, definitely makes this an onsen day! A lot of lifts are not running as a consequence of the wind. I omitted mentioning yesterday that the Shinkansen is not running between the Nasu area and Fukushima as power lines went down due to the earthquake as well as checks being made on the line. It might be up and running now as Japan is usually pretty fast in this kind of repair work, but, do check if you're coming up or are going back (a local train is running for the halted Shinkansen section, however, it is slooooow). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After that wet kind of day yesterday with some strong winds overnight there is good news this morning... ski areas are reporting snowfall on the mountain. Up to 20cm of it. There's just a little down to base areas, but that is certainly better than rain. And the even better news is that we should be getting some decent snowfall through Thursday, perhaps the most coming in around tomorrow evening.
