Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata

New snowfall at base 1cm
Snowfall at base this season 376cm

Posted on Thursday 25th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here.

And the best slope today goes to Sunrise.

Although it snowed during yesterday, it felt more for ambience than anything else. However, it has made a difference to the slopes overall, but there is still a lot of ice around.

The Kurohime Giant is closed as being mainly a steep ice field and a fall at the top would take you to the bottom. Most others areas have large swathes of ice, but, if you stick to where the piste basher has been, that combined with the 1-2cm of snow makes them mostly ok. Off that, you can encounter nasty wavy glass ice. Half of the Ohira course is still sheet ice. Sunrise is the only fully clear decent slope.

The trees are beautiful so make the most of those Kodak moments as they will disappear by the weekend I reckon.

The slopes are naturally running very fast so make sure your edges are keen and allow for braking distance.

The clouds are racing just above the top of Chuo No. 2 but no real wind on the slopes. The sun has been in and out so a varied day in terms of blue skies. Otherwise it is bright and clear.
