Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 1012cm Posted on Thursday 18th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Again, perhaps not quite as much snow as we were expecting yesterday - it was a bit on/off during the day - with just a few cm piling up by evening time. That's not a complaint, just an observation. ;) This morning there is another 20cm being measured and here is what ski areas are reporting: Kagura: 10-20cm Iwappara: 15-20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm There seems to have been more snow just to the north in Minamiuonuma (32cm measured at SJHQ) than in Yuzawa this morning. Interesting to see Kagura reporting 10-20cm. Still, there's generally a good 20cm or so layer out there again and hopefully more to add to that through today as it continues to come down. Quite cold too, this morning. The snow is due to ease off by tomorrow morning and perhaps we'll get some sunshine. Still looks like we will enjoy a sunny weekend... along with mild temperatures once again. Decent-heavy snow with mild-warm periods between the snowfalls seems to be one of the headlines of this season in this region. With that in mind, it is good to see more snow due next week. ----- GALA Yuzawa All courses open Official snow depth: 340cm Ishiuchi Maruyama All areas open Official snow depth: Mid: 270cm Iwappara The Number 2 pair lift only is open today Official snow depth: 250cm Joetsu Kokusai 3 lifts and 7 courses in the main Nagamine and Panorama areas open Official snow depth: 290cm Kagura Kagura be open as normal this morning Official snow depth: Top: 330cm Base: 280cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Normal weekday operations (D lift and 2 courses closed) Official snow depth: 270cm Maiko Snow Resort All areas open - Dolphin & Champion courses closed to general public for competition Official snow depth: Top: 330cm Base: 210cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Currently closed NASPA Ski Garden All courses apart from Course C open Official snow depth: 250cm Naeba 6 lifts (including Number 2 Gondola) and 14 courses open Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 150cm Yuzawa Kogen Both base and Kogen areas open Official snow depth: Top: 320cm Base: 240cm Yuzawa Nakazato Number 1, 2, 3 and 5 lifts operating Official snow depth: 235cm Yuzawa Park Closed on weekdays this week ----- Various announced changes to operations at ski areas: Most of these temporary changes are due to the current 'state of emergency' announced in urban areas. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 42cm Snowfall at base this season 1054cm Posted on Friday 19th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Last night at 8pm, 24cm of fresh snowfall was moved off the measuring point; this morning there's another 18cm on there. So that's 42cm since yesterday morning. Here's what ski areas are reporting (sometimes with that kind of vague 'since last night' wording): Kagura: 30cm Iwappara: about 20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm So it's probably safe to say that - at the very least - there's 20cm of fresh, and likely a fair bit more than that in ungroomed areas this morning. Great news. Those snow walls that we all love along the side of the roads remain impressive. Long may it continue! :) It's a fairly cold start, cloudy and grey. Light snow is still falling early morning but it is due to ease off soon. There might even be some sunshine before the end of the day. We are due sunshine from the start of the weekend... along with those warming temperatures once again. ----- If you plan to be here over the weekend: Please do check the information noted below regarding ski area operations. First of all, here's what ski areas are reporting this morning: Kagura: 40cm Iwappara: 15cm overnight, 40cm total since yesterday Ishiuchi Maruyama: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30cm We have measured 29cm since 9am yesterday morning. So there's a very decent layer of new snow out there to freshen things up. A north westerly wind is affecting operations at Kagura and Naeba. At the former, the Tashiro Area the top Number 5 lift will be closed again today. The Kagura Number 1 lift might or might not get moving, depending on conditions. So Kagura is open with access via Mitsumata Ropeway. The top areas of Naeba are also not opening at the start of the day but they might if conditions improve. Other ski areas appear to be opening as planned. There might be some more cm coming in today - currently light-moderate snow as of 8am. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And Nature has presented us with a nice gift for the beginning of the weekend... 5-10cm of fresh snow on the ground. What ski areas are reporting this morning: Kagura: 10cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 5cm Iwappara: 5cm Maiko Snow Resort: 5cm So there's a layer of fresh out there. It feels like it might be a bit windy this morning and early on Kagura are saying that their Number 1 quad and top Number 5 lift might not start the day. Other ski areas not reporting any expected disruption. The snowfall isn't expected to last long and there might be some sun before the end of the day. Ski areas are expecting another lively weekend and some lifts that are currently being rested on weekdays are open again. Over at Muikamachi Hakkaisan, the Ropeway along with the Number 1 and 3 lifts will be operating from today. Looks like the Number 2 lift on the left side won't be opening again this season. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 1109cm Posted on Wednesday 3rd March 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The rain that was forecast (and unfortunately we got) yesterday turned into snow later on and it is nice to see a layer of white this morning. Here's what ski areas are reporting: Kagura: 15-30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 15cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Iwappara: 5-10cm As spring approaches there are going to be more days when there is fresh snow on the mountain and less (or none) down in town. Any reports of snowfall from ski areas will, of course, be reported here. There is some light snow lingering early morning but it's due to clear and we might get sunny skies later on. Even so, it should remain fairly cold today. Tomorrow is due to be sunny and mild. ----- GALA Yuzawa are saying that they will be closed until Sunday 7th March. Hopefully that means they will be able to be back open come Monday. ----- Someone asked about Kandatsu Snow Resort and their lift operations. On their website they say 全コースOPEN ('all courses open'). Below that they make a note to say that weekends and holidays are フルオープン ('Full Open'). Debatable wording aside, here's what the situation is: On weekends and holidays Kandatsu is indeed 'fully open' - that is, all lifts and all courses are open. However, on weekdays the D quad lift is rested and the Milky Way and Super Antares courses are effectively... closed (because you need to take the D quad lift to get to them). This is actually not a special 2020-2021 season thing - they have operated like that for a number of seasons now. Interesting fact: There used to be another operating 1300m quad lift at Kandatsu, going up from close to the D lift to the top of the Milky Way course... that lift disappeared from course maps around 2000 (but remains in place). ----- GALA Yuzawa Closed until Sunday 7th March Official snow depth: 360cm Ishiuchi Maruyama All areas open Official snow depth: Mid: 260cm Iwappara Number 2 pair lift open today Official snow depth: 210cm Joetsu Kokusai 3 lifts and 9 courses in the Nagamine and Panorama areas Official snow depth: 270cm Kagura Kagura Number 1 quad and Number 5 pair might not open today Official snow depth: Top: 340cm Base: 290cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Normal weekday operations (D lift and 2 courses closed) Official snow depth: 245cm Maiko Snow Resort Gondola closed today due to wind; top Okusoeji area may also be affected Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 160cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Should be open as planned Official snow depth: Top: 350cm Base: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden All courses apart from Course C open, 3 lifts operating Official snow depth: 230cm Naeba 6 lifts (including Number 2 Gondola) and 14 courses scheduled to open Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 150cm Yuzawa Kogen Top Kogen area might be closed due to wind - depending on conditions Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Yuzawa Nakazato Number 1, 2, 3 and 5 lifts operating Official snow depth: 190cm Yuzawa Park Closed today ----- Various announced changes to operations at ski areas. There's not much of a wind and ski areas should be opening as planned this morning. Unfortunately, if the forecasts are correct we are going to get rain on tomorrow and Sunday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1109cm Posted on Friday 19th March 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Lots of sunshine yesterday and we are forecast more sun today. Early on there is a lot of cloud around again. A mix of grey cloud, white cloud and some sunshine at 8:30am. It will very probably be clearing up during the morning again. High temp of around 8C in town this afternoon. Tomorrow is currently forecast to start off fine and be a mix of cloud and clearer weather during the day, maybe more cloud than today. Sunday is still forecast to bring us... rain. (Not much of that please). Ski areas opening as planned this morning. Yuzawa Park is open today. And there's just three days left in the season for Muikamachi Hakkaisan. ----- The official 'state of emergency' that Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama and Kanagawa have been under since January is going to be lifted at the end of Sunday (21st March). It was never a lockdown, as such, and in recent weeks you might be forgiven for thinking that it had already been called off with more people out and about. Lots of cars from those regions have been spotted at ski areas here. This lifting is a little late to make much of a difference for the ski areas that are closing in the next week or so, but for the ones open into April and beyond it will be interesting to see if and how this will change anything. ----- Individual ski area information: Friday 19th March 2021 Information on a selection of the larger ski areas in the region, listed in alphabetical order. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 22nd March 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1109cm Posted on Monday 22nd March 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The rain only started in the afternoon yesterday but it did rain quite heavily in the evening. It was windy during the day and temperatures rose to over 17C in town (according to Japan Meteorological Agency). Due to all that lot, snow levels have predictably decreased by a fair bit. An unscientific measure of the snow in my garden shows 30-40cm, perhaps more, disappeared over the weekend. OK so on to more positive sounding news! Snow cover is still good and as you can see on the Ishiuchi Maruyama webcam, the fields in the Minamiuonuma valley are still all white. This morning feels a bit damp still but it's not raining. Those strong winds are gone and while it is mostly cloudy, there is also some blue sky and it is quite bright. The forecasts mostly just tell us to expect a cloudy day and much cooler temperatures than yesterday. (Kagura does seem to be reporting winds higher up and the Number 1 quad and top Number 5 lifts might be affected). There's a few operation changes from today as we approach the end of March - some lifts and courses now getting closed. We have tried to add as much available information as possible in the list below and will continue to check info each morning. In terms of more significant changes, over at GALA Yuzawa the Southern Area is now closed but the Central and Northern Areas remain open (until 5th May). Ishiuchi Maruyama is open via the Main (Chuo) Entrance and the Sunrise Express lift. The Muikamachi Hakkaisan ski area is now closed for the season. ----- Individual ski area information: Monday 22nd March 2021 Information on a selection of the larger ski areas in the region, listed in alphabetical order. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1109cm Posted on Monday 5th April 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get some rain in the afternoon yesterday but perhaps we should be happy that it held off until later on. There is still some rain around this morning but it is due to ease off hopefully quickly and we might end the day with some sun. Early morning there's what looks like cloud/fog at higher elevations with limited visibility. It definitely feels much cooler than it has been over the last few days and currently it is about 6C and not forecast to rise much beyond that today. Tomorrow is due to be sunny and a little warmer than today. With yesterday being the last day of the season for some ski areas, from today we are down to just four: Kagura, Naeba, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu. At Naeba, just the Takenokodaira and Daishamen courses in the upper area of the mountain remain open - you need to get the gondola back down as all base areas are now closed. GALA Yuzawa has now closed their downhill Falcon course so you need to get the gondola back down there too. The planned closing dates of those ski areas are noted in the list below. It will be interesting to see if Kagura in particular will be able to remain open until 23rd May. We'll keep an eye out for any adjustments.
