There's not much of a wind and ski areas should be opening as planned this morning. Unfortunately, if the forecasts are correct we are going to get rain on tomorrow and Sunday. Higher elevations may well get some snow, but lower areas are unlikely to escape rain. Always best to avoid rain, but timing could be better.. weekend, and all. Ski areas have been expecting another busy weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Lots of sunshine yesterday and we are forecast more sun today. Early on there is a lot of cloud around again. A mix of grey cloud, white cloud and some sunshine at 8:30am. It will very probably be clearing up during the morning again. High temp of around 8C in town this afternoon. Tomorrow is currently forecast to start off fine and be a mix of cloud and clearer weather during the day, maybe more cloud than today. Sunday is still forecast to bring us... rain. (Not much of that please). Ski areas opening as planned this morning. Yuzawa Park is open today. And there's just three days left in the season for Muikamachi Hakkaisan. ----- The official 'state of emergency' that Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama and Kanagawa have been under since January is going to be lifted at the end of Sunday (21st March). It was never a lockdown, as such, and in recent weeks you might be forgiven for thinking that it had already been called off with more people out and about. Lots of cars from those regions have been spotted at ski areas here. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The rain only started in the afternoon yesterday but it did rain quite heavily in the evening. It was windy during the day and temperatures rose to over 17C in town (according to Japan Meteorological Agency). Due to all that lot, snow levels have predictably decreased by a fair bit. An unscientific measure of the snow in my garden shows 30-40cm, perhaps more, disappeared over the weekend. OK so on to more positive sounding news! Snow cover is still good and as you can see on the Ishiuchi Maruyama webcam, the fields in the Minamiuonuma valley are still all white. This morning feels a bit damp still but it's not raining. Those strong winds are gone and while it is mostly cloudy, there is also some blue sky and it is quite bright. The forecasts mostly just tell us to expect a cloudy day and much cooler temperatures than yesterday. (Kagura does seem to be reporting winds higher up and the Number 1 quad and top Number 5 lifts might be affected). There's a few operation changes from today as we approach the end of March - some lifts and courses now getting closed. We have tried to add as much available information as possible in the list below and will continue to check info each morning. In terms of more significant changes, over at GALA Yuzawa the Southern Area is now closed but the Central and Northern Areas remain open (until 5th May). Ishiuchi Maruyama is open via the Main (Chuo) Entrance and the Sunrise Express lift. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have clear skies above Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma again this morning and the sun is out. We might have more cloud later on but generally sunny and warm conditions forecast through the end of tomorrow. High temperatures around 15C, maybe rising above that tomorrow. Sunday looks set to be more cloudy, bringing with it the chance of some rain later in the day. Let's hope we can avoid that. This weekend is the last weekend of the season for Yuzawa Nakazato, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Maiko Snow Resort - and also the smaller Ipponsugi and Nakazato Snow Wood. From Monday our choice for skiing and snowboarding will be down to Kagura, Naeba, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu. ----- Lots of farmers are busy now with diggers breaking up the snow as they want to get to their fields. There is still some rain around this morning but it is due to ease off hopefully quickly and we might end the day with some sun. Early morning there's what looks like cloud/fog at higher elevations with limited visibility. It definitely feels much cooler than it has been over the last few days and currently it is about 6C and not forecast to rise much beyond that today. Tomorrow is due to be sunny and a little warmer than today. With yesterday being the last day of the season for some ski areas, from today we are down to just four: Kagura, Naeba, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu. At Naeba, just the Takenokodaira and Daishamen courses in the upper area of the mountain remain open - you need to get the gondola back down as all base areas are now closed. GALA Yuzawa has now closed their downhill Falcon course so you need to get the gondola back down there too. The planned closing dates of those ski areas are noted in the list below. It will be interesting to see if Kagura in particular will be able to remain open until 23rd May. We'll keep an eye out for any adjustments. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is also closed. At the start of the day only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura is planning on opening. Kandatsu will probably be opening as planned with two lifts operating. Almost definitely rain is coming tomorrow and it might still be windy too... The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Rain varied yesterday - easing off at times during the day time - and then got heavier in the evening. This morning we have cloudy skies and it looks like the sun might be trying to break through (it already is to the north). There's some fog in some higher places though as you can see on the webcam images below; that will likely clear soon. Tomorrow is currently looking mixed and unpredictable again, but there's a chance of rain again... and again more later on in the day. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It was good to see some sunshine yesterday. It was bright and kind of hazy. This morning is very mild, generally cloudy and there's a southerly wind. Unfortunately, that wind is preventing GALA Yuzawa and the Tashiro Area of Kagura from opening today. Today was of course supposed to be the last day of the season for both of those areas, so that presumably means that they effectively finished up for 20-21 at the end of yesterday. Disappointing, but a bit otsukaresama deshita to everyone involved. The top lift at Kagura is also on hold this morning and there is a chance that more might be affected. Kagura plans to remain open until Sunday 23rd May. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have some blue skies and sun this morning. The forecast shows a run of days of mostly clearer and drier weather now - perhaps we might get some Golden Week-like weather (...now that Golden Week has just ended!) Today a high temperature of around 22C is forecast for town. The Kagura resort remains open, via Mitsumata Ropeway. Here's what remains open: - Kagura main course - Technical course - Panorama course - Giant course - Gondola course - Family Course (Mitsumata) - Gondola Line course (Mitsumata) The Mitsumata courses are basically just a way back to the Ropeway and are now just narrow strips of snow. GALA Yuzawa is now officially closed. They will re-open on 22nd July for the summer season, complete with an artificial slope. ----- Kagura is part open 7 courses available 6 lifts operating The Kagura Area (via Mitsumata) plans to be open until Sunday 23rd May Official snow depth: Top: 150cm Base: 20cm ----- All other ski areas in the region are now closed for the season.
