  • Yuzawa Now: Friday 29th January 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 735cm Posted on Friday 29th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The weather this morning so far has been kind of confusing and rather changeable. There was some snow overnight, but not as much as we were expecting. There is a thin layer by the side of the roads and trees are looking frosted. Only Iwappara are reporting some fresh snow, they say 3-5cm - so we can probably expect perhaps 5cm+ in higher areas. Some strong noisy winds woke me up in the middle of the night. Just a little earlier it was actually quite bright out there. Even some sun particularly just to the north of Yuzawa, where there has been no snow on the ground overnight. And right now (8:40am as I write this), it is getting more grey and cloudy once again. The snow (as well as stronger winds) that we were promised does look like it is on the way.... within the next hour or two, according to local forecasts. Unfortunately the GALA Yuzawa resort is going to be closed for the day due to the forecast strong winds and Yuzawa Kogen are saying that the Ropeway might be put on hold depending on the weather from now. So, hopefully there will be a good amount of fresh snow to report tomorrow morning. Once it gets started it is due to be snowing through tomorrow. ----- GALA Yuzawa Closed today due to wind Official snow depth: 260cm Ishiuchi Maruyama All areas open Official snow depth: Mid: 190cm Iwappara Number 2 pair lift in central area open today Official snow depth: 190cm Joetsu Kokusai 9 courses open in the main Nagamine and Panorama areas Official snow depth: 200cm Kagura Currently closed Kandatsu Snow Resort Open as planned (D lift is rested on weekdays) Official snow depth: 190cm Maiko Snow Resort All courses open Official snow depth: Top: 255cm Base: 140cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Currently closed NASPA Ski Garden All courses apart from C Course are open Official snow depth: 170cm Naeba Currently closed Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway and top area might be closed depending on weather Official snow depth: Top: 220cm Base: 180cm Yuzawa Nakazato Number 1, 2 and 3 lifts operating Official snow depth: 265cm Yuzawa Park Currently closed on weekdays ----- Various changes to operations at various ski areas at the moment: GALA Yuzawa: The Sociable lift will be closed on weekdays for the time being, with slightly earlier closing times. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 30th January 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 58cm Snowfall at base this season 793cm Posted on Saturday 30th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. For a while there yesterday it felt like we might miss out on the heavy snow, but it started snowing mid to late morning and by evening there was just over 30cm of it to clear. And this morning there is an additional 26cm, giving us a total of 58cm since yesterday morning. Nice. Here is the amounts of snow that ski areas are reporting this morning: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 70cm Iwappara: 40-50cm Maiko Snow Resort: 40cm It's a shame that Kagura aren't reporting during their 'closed' period as there might be a very impressive number up there... So we got our thick later of fresh snow which is great news. Wind was an issue yesterday (and probably partly accounts for there being more/less fresh snow in different places) and while it is not too bad this morning some issues remain. GALA Yuzawa is planning on being fully open again this morning. NASPA Ski Garden will have all their lifts operating this morning (they originally planned to have one quad rested). The Gondola and top area at Maiko Snow Resort are on hold at the start of the day due to wind conditions, and the gondola/6-seater lift at Ishiuchi Maruyama will be operating with gondola cabins only (handy feature, that!) Other than that, ski areas are saying that while there might be some slower lifts (due to the wind), they are otherwise going to be opening as planned this morning. The forecast is for snow through the day today, though we have very likely already seen the heaviest snow for this particular snow storm. The snow clouds should remain over the region into tomorrow and then much clearer skies are due on Monday. It would be great if everyone could get to enjoy a good weekend - skiers, snowboarders, playing-in-the-snow'ers, ski areas, hotels, ski schools... and everyone else involved! Take care, stay safe and have a good Saturday. ----- GALA Yuzawa All courses and all lifts plan to open Official snow depth: 270cm Ishiuchi Maruyama All areas plan to be open Official snow depth: Mid: 260cm Iwappara Base to summit areas plan to be open Official snow depth: 240cm Joetsu Kokusai 13 courses open in the main Nagamine and Panorama areas Official snow depth: 250cm Kagura Currently closed Kandatsu Snow Resort All courses and lifts plan to be open Official snow depth: 210cm Maiko Snow Resort Gondola and top area on hold at start of the day Official snow depth: Top: 270cm Base: 180cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Currently closed NASPA Ski Garden All courses and all lifts plan to be open Official snow depth: 170cm Naeba Currently closed Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway and top area might be closed depending on weather Official snow depth: Top: 220cm Base: 180cm Yuzawa Nakazato Number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 lifts operating Official snow depth: 275cm Yuzawa Park Number 1, 7 and 8 lifts operating Official snow depth: 190cm ----- Various announced changes to operations at ski areas: Most of these temporary changes are due to the current 'state of emergency' announced in urban areas. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 808cm Posted on Sunday 31st January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday while it was snowing for a large part towards the end of the day there were some clearer skies. Back to snow overnight though and this this morning Maiko Snow Resort and Iwappara are reporting 10cm and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 5cm ('since yesterday evening'), and we have measured 15cm of snowfall since the report yesterday morning. That brings our observed snowfall for the month of January to 355cm and the total for the season so far up to 808cm. Will take a closer look at those numbers sometime in the next few days. The snow clouds are due to ease off this morning, perhaps around lunchtime. Maybe some breaks in the cloud again this afternoon? • Yuzawa Now: Monday 1st February 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 814cm Posted on Monday 1st February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. February already! We start the month with snow-loaded tree branches, lots of fresh snow everywhere and the sun shining down on us. It's a beautiful morning. There has been no fresh snow from overnight - though snow did continue snowing for longer than expected yesterday during the day time. Looking around town ski areas seemed to be quite busy too. It is very cold this morning too (well under zero) but we're due a real warm-up during the day with a high maybe as high as around 7 or 8C later this afternoon. (!) And it might rain overnight tonight, which seems really cruel of Nature after giving us all this lovely new fresh snow. Anyway, we'll see. This morning should be a great morning to be on the mountains. But... Unfortunately, forecast southerly winds for today means that GALA Yuzawa and the top area of Yuzawa Kogen are going to be closed for the day today. Other ski areas appear to be opening as 'normal', though we're still in this kind of weird 'not normal weekday operations' period of time. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 834cm Posted on Wednesday 3rd February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Happily we can quickly erase the memory of rain yesterday morning because it turned into snow and by evening there was up to around 5cm on the ground. This morning that has increased to 20cm just measured now. It is still snowing and it probably will through the day (though there are hints are brighter skies at times). Might get some more snow tomorrow too. Regular snowfall... all good. Here's how much snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 15cm Iwappara: 10-15cm A quick shout-out to Iwappara, who recently have been reporting how much snow they get in a morning. Some people have sometimes asked why we only seem to mention new snowfall numbers from Maiko, Ishiuchi and Kagura (when they are open!) in these reports... that's because they are the only ones who regularly mention snowfall numbers every morning. We're more than happy to report as much information as is available each morning. ----- You may well have heard but the Japanese government yesterday announced that the 'state of emergency' in Tokyo and some other areas will be extended to 7th March. It was originally planned until 7th February. It remains to be seen how that will affect ski area operations. Will Kagura and Naeba remain closed, or will they re-open? The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we did get continued snowfall during the day, though there was only 5cm of fresh to measure by evening. Perhaps more higher up on the mountainsides. There is no fresh cm of snow to report from overnight. We start this morning with some beautiful clear blue skies and sunshine. It is a cold start and there is a bit of a southerly wind. The clear skies are not due to last though, with snow due to be falling again by lunchtime. It might get quite windy too. With the wind expected later on today, at Ishiuchi Maruyama just the gondola cabins are going to be on the Sunrise Express lift today (no 6-person chairs). There might also be some disruption to normal lift operations at other ski areas too, depending on weather conditions of course. Let's hope not. Snow is due for this afternoon and overnight tonight, perhaps clearing up during the morning tomorrow. Currently it looks like we should be enjoying some sunshine on Saturday. ----- There is no official word yet on what Naeba and Kagura plan to do in the coming weeks. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 48cm Snowfall at base this season 887cm Posted on Friday 5th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Loads of fresh snowfall to report once again! Perhaps even more than we expected. It was really coming down at a fast pace at times last night and this morning we have some impressive fresh snowfall numbers: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 60cm Iwappara: 50-60cm Maiko Snow Resort: more than 40cm 48cm has just been measured at our point. The snow seems to be easing off early morning and we are due for the skies to start clearing. We might get some sunshine and blue skies. And we will almost definitely get sunshine during the day tomorrow. It should be an excellent day today, and tomorrow should be very good too. Hopefully everyone will be able to enjoy a good weekend. ----- Interesting news from Kandatsu Kogen. It might be mid-season, but they are opening a 'new course'. Or perhaps, as they say in places, an 'almost new course' (ほぼ新コース) It is so (almost) new that they have not named it yet! It's basically that area between the Sirius and Pegasus courses. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 8th February 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 904cm Posted on Monday 8th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. By late morning yesterday the skies were overcast and unfortunately we did then get rained on. It was trying to snow the higher you got and by night time it had turned into snow down in town. Happy to report that there's a decent layer of fresh snow from overnight this morning. Here's what ski areas are reporting: Kagura: 50cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Iwappara: 10-15cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm 17cm has just been measured for the report. With that large number coming from Kagura, perhaps it is one of those days when there is clearly more fresh snow the higher you go. It feels a bit windy outside and is definitely colder. We are forecast snowfall today and through tomorrow as well. ----- It is good to see Kagura and Naeba back in the mix from today. At the time of writing neither had posted any kind of map showing what will be open today. The Kagura official information this morning says that 18 of 23 courses will be open and are noting that Tashiro to Kagura connecting course will be open. The Naeba official information shows 6 lifts planned to be operating including the Number 2 Gondola and Takenokodaira pair lift. As mentioned previously, the Dragondola connecting Naeba and Tashiro will not be opening for the rest of this season. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 9th February 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 42cm Snowfall at base this season 946cm Posted on Tuesday 9th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So it was snowing for a lot of yesterday but in the afternoon there was actually a period of some clearer skies. Back to snow after that though. This morning it is a cold start and there is a good layer of fresh snow on the ground. 30cm of snowfall measured at 8am this morning. On top of the snow that fell during the day yesterday since the last report, that's another 42cm for the report today. Here is how much fresh snowfall the ski areas are reporting this morning: Kagura: 60-70cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 40cm Iwappara: 30-40cm Maiko Snow Resort: at least 30-40cm Yuzawa Kogen: 40cm Excellent news. Apparently it is a bit windy over at Naeba and Kagura this morning and that might affect some lifts, though all ski areas appear to be opening this morning. Snow is due through today. Kagura are reporting -15C Currently the forecast for tomorrow is sunshine. ----- Where are we today... 9th February. We have impressive snow walls all around town, and have done for much of the season since that first heavy snowfall in mid December. We're in a good place in terms of the snow situation. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 10th February 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 21cm Snowfall at base this season 967cm Posted on Wednesday 10th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. By night time yesterday there was 7cm of snowfall (since the morning report) and there is an additional 14cm to add to that this morning. So, 21cm since yesterdays report. Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Iwappara: 5cm (from last night) Kagura: 5cm (from last night) Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm (from last night) Interesting bunch of numbers. The 'from last night' kind of wording that some ski areas use is always...curious. Is that actually meant to include snow during the day yesterday? The wording suggests not. But it would be great to include that too so we can keep a track of it. Just to be clear, the concept behind the numbers on our reports is 'since the last report' - a full days worth. Anyway, back to the weather. There is a lot of cloud still around and but some surrounding areas are seeing a bit of sunshine already, and there are some hints of it in places here too; so wouldn't be surprised if we also got clearer skies today. [Update at 9:15am: The sun is out!] There might be some more snowfall overnight tonight but tomorrow the forecast is for cloud once again. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was... wet. Though higher up Kagura are reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall. Unfortunately they are also reporting that the Tashiro Area of the resort will be closed today, along with the top Kagura Number 5 pair lift - due to forecast strong winds. Other ski areas appear to be opening as planned this morning and it doesn't feel particularly windy outside at the moment. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5cm of fresh snow this morning, Ishiuchi reporting 0cm and Iwappara is reporting 'just a little bit'. A few cm or so of snow on the ground around town areas and light snow is falling at the moment (though there are some hints of blue sky over Naeba at the time of writing). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I think we were expecting more snow than we got yesterday - it didn't really happen during the daytime. There was even some blue skies and sun; at times, in places. Snow started later in the evening and this morning there's just over 20cm measured on the ground. Ski areas are reporting similar numbers: Kagura: 30cm Iwappara: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm That probably gives you a good idea of how much fresh snow there is out there this morning. It is snowing (lightly) now and should be through today and tomorrow. Heavier snowfall due tonight. So there should be a few more days of decent numbers in these reports. Clearer skies are due again over the weekend; perhaps on Friday too. Good news from Joetsu Kokusai - they will be opening their Active Zone (Osawa) area on Saturday and Sunday.
