The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Loads of fresh snowfall to report once again! Perhaps even more than we expected. It was really coming down at a fast pace at times last night and this morning we have some impressive fresh snowfall numbers: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 60cm Iwappara: 50-60cm Maiko Snow Resort: more than 40cm 48cm has just been measured at our point. The snow seems to be easing off early morning and we are due for the skies to start clearing. We might get some sunshine and blue skies. And we will almost definitely get sunshine during the day tomorrow. It should be an excellent day today, and tomorrow should be very good too. Hopefully everyone will be able to enjoy a good weekend. ----- Interesting news from Kandatsu Kogen. It might be mid-season, but they are opening a 'new course'. Or perhaps, as they say in places, an 'almost new course' (ほぼ新コース) It is so (almost) new that they have not named it yet! It's basically that area between the Sirius and Pegasus courses. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. By late morning yesterday the skies were overcast and unfortunately we did then get rained on. It was trying to snow the higher you got and by night time it had turned into snow down in town. Happy to report that there's a decent layer of fresh snow from overnight this morning. Here's what ski areas are reporting: Kagura: 50cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Iwappara: 10-15cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm 17cm has just been measured for the report. With that large number coming from Kagura, perhaps it is one of those days when there is clearly more fresh snow the higher you go. It feels a bit windy outside and is definitely colder. We are forecast snowfall today and through tomorrow as well. ----- It is good to see Kagura and Naeba back in the mix from today. At the time of writing neither had posted any kind of map showing what will be open today. The Kagura official information this morning says that 18 of 23 courses will be open and are noting that Tashiro to Kagura connecting course will be open. The Naeba official information shows 6 lifts planned to be operating including the Number 2 Gondola and Takenokodaira pair lift. As mentioned previously, the Dragondola connecting Naeba and Tashiro will not be opening for the rest of this season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So it was snowing for a lot of yesterday but in the afternoon there was actually a period of some clearer skies. Back to snow after that though. This morning it is a cold start and there is a good layer of fresh snow on the ground. 30cm of snowfall measured at 8am this morning. On top of the snow that fell during the day yesterday since the last report, that's another 42cm for the report today. Here is how much fresh snowfall the ski areas are reporting this morning: Kagura: 60-70cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 40cm Iwappara: 30-40cm Maiko Snow Resort: at least 30-40cm Yuzawa Kogen: 40cm Excellent news. Apparently it is a bit windy over at Naeba and Kagura this morning and that might affect some lifts, though all ski areas appear to be opening this morning. Snow is due through today. Kagura are reporting -15C Currently the forecast for tomorrow is sunshine. ----- Where are we today... 9th February. We have impressive snow walls all around town, and have done for much of the season since that first heavy snowfall in mid December. We're in a good place in terms of the snow situation. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. By night time yesterday there was 7cm of snowfall (since the morning report) and there is an additional 14cm to add to that this morning. So, 21cm since yesterdays report. Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Iwappara: 5cm (from last night) Kagura: 5cm (from last night) Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm (from last night) Interesting bunch of numbers. The 'from last night' kind of wording that some ski areas use is always...curious. Is that actually meant to include snow during the day yesterday? The wording suggests not. But it would be great to include that too so we can keep a track of it. Just to be clear, the concept behind the numbers on our reports is 'since the last report' - a full days worth. Anyway, back to the weather. There is a lot of cloud still around and but some surrounding areas are seeing a bit of sunshine already, and there are some hints of it in places here too; so wouldn't be surprised if we also got clearer skies today. [Update at 9:15am: The sun is out!] There might be some more snowfall overnight tonight but tomorrow the forecast is for cloud once again. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was... wet. Though higher up Kagura are reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall. Unfortunately they are also reporting that the Tashiro Area of the resort will be closed today, along with the top Kagura Number 5 pair lift - due to forecast strong winds. Other ski areas appear to be opening as planned this morning and it doesn't feel particularly windy outside at the moment. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5cm of fresh snow this morning, Ishiuchi reporting 0cm and Iwappara is reporting 'just a little bit'. A few cm or so of snow on the ground around town areas and light snow is falling at the moment (though there are some hints of blue sky over Naeba at the time of writing). If forecasts are correct we can expect light snow on/off today, with heavier snow tomorrow and Thursday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I think we were expecting more snow than we got yesterday - it didn't really happen during the daytime. There was even some blue skies and sun; at times, in places. Snow started later in the evening and this morning there's just over 20cm measured on the ground. Ski areas are reporting similar numbers: Kagura: 30cm Iwappara: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm That probably gives you a good idea of how much fresh snow there is out there this morning. It is snowing (lightly) now and should be through today and tomorrow. Heavier snowfall due tonight. So there should be a few more days of decent numbers in these reports. Clearer skies are due again over the weekend; perhaps on Friday too. Good news from Joetsu Kokusai - they will be opening their Active Zone (Osawa) area on Saturday and Sunday. Again, perhaps not quite as much snow as we were expecting yesterday - it was a bit on/off during the day - with just a few cm piling up by evening time. That's not a complaint, just an observation. ;) This morning there is another 20cm being measured and here is what ski areas are reporting: Kagura: 10-20cm Iwappara: 15-20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm There seems to have been more snow just to the north in Minamiuonuma (32cm measured at SJHQ) than in Yuzawa this morning. Interesting to see Kagura reporting 10-20cm. Still, there's generally a good 20cm or so layer out there again and hopefully more to add to that through today as it continues to come down. Quite cold too, this morning. The snow is due to ease off by tomorrow morning and perhaps we'll get some sunshine. Still looks like we will enjoy a sunny weekend... along with mild temperatures once again. Decent-heavy snow with mild-warm periods between the snowfalls seems to be one of the headlines of this season in this region. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Last night at 8pm, 24cm of fresh snowfall was moved off the measuring point; this morning there's another 18cm on there. So that's 42cm since yesterday morning. Here's what ski areas are reporting (sometimes with that kind of vague 'since last night' wording): Kagura: 30cm Iwappara: about 20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm So it's probably safe to say that - at the very least - there's 20cm of fresh, and likely a fair bit more than that in ungroomed areas this morning. Light snow is still falling early morning but it is due to ease off soon. There might even be some sunshine before the end of the day. First of all, here's what ski areas are reporting this morning: Kagura: 40cm Iwappara: 15cm overnight, 40cm total since yesterday Ishiuchi Maruyama: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30cm We have measured 29cm since 9am yesterday morning. So there's a very decent layer of new snow out there to freshen things up. A north westerly wind is affecting operations at Kagura and Naeba. At the former, the Tashiro Area the top Number 5 lift will be closed again today. The Kagura Number 1 lift might or might not get moving, depending on conditions. So Kagura is open with access via Mitsumata Ropeway. The top areas of Naeba are also not opening at the start of the day but they might if conditions improve. Other ski areas appear to be opening as planned. There might be some more cm coming in today - currently light-moderate snow as of 8am. Sunny skies are due tomorrow but unlike the weekend, it probably won't be warming up too much. Then we might get some more snow again on Friday, though it will probably only be a modest amount. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And Nature has presented us with a nice gift for the beginning of the weekend... 5-10cm of fresh snow on the ground. What ski areas are reporting this morning: Kagura: 10cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 5cm Iwappara: 5cm Maiko Snow Resort: 5cm So there's a layer of fresh out there. It feels like it might be a bit windy this morning and early on Kagura are saying that their Number 1 quad and top Number 5 lift might not start the day. Other ski areas not reporting any expected disruption. The snowfall isn't expected to last long and there might be some sun before the end of the day. Ski areas are expecting another lively weekend and some lifts that are currently being rested on weekdays are open again. Over at Muikamachi Hakkaisan, the Ropeway along with the Number 1 and 3 lifts will be operating from today. Looks like the Number 2 lift on the left side won't be opening again this season. Here's what ski areas are reporting: Kagura: 15-30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 15cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Iwappara: 5-10cm As spring approaches there are going to be more days when there is fresh snow on the mountain and less (or none) down in town. Any reports of snowfall from ski areas will, of course, be reported here. There is some light snow lingering early morning but it's due to clear and we might get sunny skies later on. Even so, it should remain fairly cold today. Tomorrow is due to be sunny and mild. ----- GALA Yuzawa are saying that they will be closed until Sunday 7th March. Hopefully that means they will be able to be back open come Monday. ----- Someone asked about Kandatsu Snow Resort and their lift operations. On their website they say 全コースOPEN ('all courses open'). Below that they make a note to say that weekends and holidays are フルオープン ('Full Open'). Debatable wording aside, here's what the situation is: On weekends and holidays Kandatsu is indeed 'fully open' - that is, all lifts and all courses are open. However, on weekdays the D quad lift is rested and the Milky Way and Super Antares courses are effectively... closed (because you need to take the D quad lift to get to them). This is actually not a special 2020-2021 season thing - they have operated like that for a number of seasons now. Most of these temporary changes are due to the current 'state of emergency' announced in urban areas. GALA Yuzawa: All courses are scheduled to be open every day. On weekdays the Sociable lift will be closed for the time being. Ishiuchi Maruyama: On weekdays, the Green Lift and Chuo triple lifts are closed for the time being. Iwappara: On most weekdays, only the Number 2 pair lift in the central area of Iwappara is open. This change is planned until the 'state of emergency' ends. Base to summit areas are open on weekends. Joetsu Kokusai: On weekdays the main area in front of the hotel and (at least part of) Panorama area are open. The Osawa area will be open on 27th-28th February. Otherwise, the Atema and Osawa areas are closed for the time being. NASPA Ski Garden: All lifts and courses are open on weekends. The Number 2 and 3 lifts are rested on weekdays, when all courses but C will be open. This change is planned until 7th March.
