- Yuzawa Now: Saturday 2nd January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 539cm Posted on Saturday 2nd January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was more snow during the day yesterday and overnight, though not quite as full on as it was and not as much as the forecasts (including the often close to correct Niigata Prefecture snowfall forecast) told us to expect. An additional 10cm was cleared yesterday evening and with just 8cm this morning... so that makes 18cm for the report today. Curiously, Kagura seem to be reporting 'no snow since yesterday'. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10cm. It is still snowing lightly now and that is probably what we can expect for the day today, though it might ease off. This morning parts of Naeba are not open due to risk of avalanche, including the top area and Dragondola. Otherwise ski areas around town appear to have caught up with themselves again and generally opening as normal; though it looks like the top quad at Iwappara is still being rested this morning. Both the top and base areas of Yuzawa Kogen are open and all of the Central and Northern Areas of GALA Yuzawa are now open. ----- GALA Yuzawa Operating lifts: - All lifts in Central and Northern Areas Courses open: - All courses in Central and Northern Areas - Downhill course (Falcon) Official snow depth: - 290cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Lift & course info: - All lifts and all areas open Official snow depth: - Top: 250cm Iwappara Operating lifts: - Number 1 pair parallel - Number 2 pair - Number 3 pair - Central quad Official snow depth: - 250cm Joetsu Kokusai Lifts & course info: 16 courses; Atema closed today Official snow depth: - 240cm Kagura Lifts & course info: - Kagura is now mostly open - Tashiro-Kagura connection now open - 19/23 courses open - 12/21 lifts operating Official snow depth: - Top: 280cm - Base: 230cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Lift & course info: - All lifts operating and all courses open Official snow depth: - 220cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: - 290cm (top) - 210cm (base) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 12 of 14 courses open - 3 of 4 lifts operating Official snow depth: - 220cm (top) - 120cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden Lift & course info: - All lifts and courses open Official snow depth: - 260cm Naeba Lift & course info: - 12 of 22 courses open - 7 of 12 lifts operating Official snow depth: - 120cm (top) - 100cm (base) Yuzawa Kogen Lift & course info: - Both Kogen and base areas open Official snow depth: - 280cm (top) - 220cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Lift & course info: - Mostly open Official snow depth: - 260cm Yuzawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Saturday 2nd January 2021 Total snowfall at base so far 539cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 15 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 96cm (16th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 453cm reported on 13 days January 2021 snowfall 86cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 555cm Posted on Sunday 3rd January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Light snow still falling here and while it has been snowing for large parts of the time since the report yesterday, there's not a huge amount of fresh to report. Here's what resorts are reporting this morning: Kagura: 15cm Maiko: 10cm Ishiuchi: 10cm All in units of 5cm of course ;) Yesterday evening 9cm of snow was moved off our measuring point and this morning there is another 7cm on there. So 16cm to report. Just light snow for the moment but it might ease off during the day today. Some conflicting forecasts for tomorrow - some say snow, some say the chance of some sunshine. I'll let you know! ----- We have been wondering what to do with the below information regarding each ski area. Basically all of the ski areas in the region are now open... and open as 'normal'. For some ski areas, that means that some lifts are being rested on weekdays - and that is and has always been the plan. For some ski areas, lifts are being rested for the whole season. Saying that, for example, 3 of 5 lifts are operating might make it appear that they are not 'fully open', when in fact they are open as they planned to be and all runs are accessible. And of course each ski area has it's own way of doing things. So if there is no individual 'notes' in the list below, presume that are basically open as normal. We'll do what we can to make note of any significant news available in a morning. We'll keep on thinking about how best to present information and will adjust again as we feel appropriate. ----- GALA Yuzawa Central and Northern Areas fully open Official snow depth: 290cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: Mid: 270cm Iwappara Summit quad lift back up and running Official snow depth: 250cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 250cm Kagura Top Kagura Number 5 pair lift opening delayed No confirmed opening date for that lift currently available Official snow depth: Top: 280cm Base: 230cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 220cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Top: 290cm Base: 210cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 280cm Base: 180cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 245cm Naeba Top area closed, but the Number 2 gondola and Takenokodaira pair lift are operating Official snow depth: Top: 120cm Base: 100cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 280cm Base: 220cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 265cm Yuzawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Sunday 3rd January 2021 Total snowfall at base so far 555cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 16 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 96cm (16th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 453cm reported on 13 days January 2021 snowfall 102cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 559cm Posted on Monday 4th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was some snow during the day yesterday though it cleared up with some blue sky and sunshine in the afternoon. Just 4cm of snow measured since the report yesterday. Kagura are reporting 2-3cm and Maiko reporting just a dusting overnight. The 'Yuzawa Snow Link' lift and course connections are now open. That means that the Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen with GALA Yuzawa and the pair lift connecting GALA Yuzawa with Ishiuchi Maruyama are now operating. That also means that part of the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is also now open, though not fully (Batman and Eliza are open in that area). It has been snowing lightly this morning but as of 8:45am it seems like it is easing off and it is getting brighter. There are blue skies appearing just to the north of Yuzawa. It feels like it might be clearing up and this report will be out of date soon after it appears! And we can probably expect at least some sunshine tomorrow. Would be perfect if the sun doesn't warm things up too much. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's a lovely morning. A dusting+ of snow overnight though no specific numbers being reported by ski areas. Back to the chance of heavy snow from tomorrow night. ----- The top Kagura Number 5 Romance lift will be open from today. It was due to open on New Years Day but good to see they have sorted that out quickly. Information is a little unclear, but it looks like the West Area (Forest Zone) of Joetsu Kokusai only has two pair lifts operating at the moment and therefore is not connected with the rest of the resort - and only accsssible via the car park over on the Tokamachi side. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 8th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 58cm Snowfall at base this season 619cm Posted on Friday 8th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday there were blue skies and calm conditions in the morning and into the afternoon too. Clouds moved in during the afternoon with snow falling, then a lull, and then it coming in full on during the evening along with some stronger winds. Though the wind never seemed to get really rough, or not enough to be woken up by! This morning Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 60cm of fresh snowfall and that is the only number I can find from ski areas. I have just measured 58cm as of 9am... and counting. It is still coming down. Limited visibility this morning and cold conditions. Some lifts may be delayed as ski areas cope with this fresh dumpage of snow. In other news... ----- Wish this did not need to be reported but here goes. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed again today and unfortunately it appears that it will be remaining closed for the time being, with no indication of when it might re-open. Kagura is open via Mitsumata Ropeway up to the Kagura Number 1 quad lift. The reasons for this being given is: Yesterday Tokyo and the surrounding three prefectures declared a 'state of emergency' regarding the coronavirus situation, running through 7th February. Japan can't legally do full on lockdowns like some other countries, and like last spring this is more like a strong request along with shortening hours etc. Niigata Prefecture (and surrounding prefectures) remain unaffected directly by this, and apart from the Tashiro news above, it is important to note that ski areas remain open. But of course many people visiting this region are normally coming from Tokyo and that area, so this will undoubtedly affect the number of people out on the slopes. If you are in one of those regions affected by these new measures, we recommend checking up on the official guidelines and going along with them. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 9th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 38cm Snowfall at base this season 657cm Posted on Saturday 9th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 10:30am update: Well, those clear blue skies didn't last for long! It has clouded over and the snow is moving back in... (though that might also not last!) Original report: Good morning from Yuzawa. We got more snow during the day yesterday with it easing off later on. 18cm was moved as of 6am. And this morning there's another 20cm of snow there. So that's yet another 38cm to report since yesterday. Maiko reporting 20cm overnight. And what's more, the snow stopped early morning and we are now enjoying some clear blue skies and sunshine as you can see on the photos below. It is a beautiful peaceful morning. Whether that will last long or not, don't know... these clear blue skies were not forecast (cloud with light snow was). ----- OK, so Kagura have been confusing us quite a bit with their information over the last few days. It was looking like the Tashiro Area would be closed. But this morning it looks like Tashiro will actually be open this weekend. There will be a special 'Tashiro Area Ticket' that is valid just on the three lifts (and Ropeway) over in the Tashiro Area. There is also a 'Kagura Area Ticket' which is valid for Mitsumata and Kagura... and also at the Tashiro Area. But note that the lift and course connections between Tashiro and Kagura are not open, so people would need to get between Mitsumata Ropeway and Tashiro Ropeway bases by car or bus. The Tashiro Area ticket is 3500 yen. The Kagura Area ticket is 4000 yen. It is currently unclear how long this particular set up will last. The Dragondola connecting Naeba with Tashiro is also not operating at the moment (and apparently that plans to be closed until 7th February). Other ski areas in the region appear to be opening as planned. ----- Individual ski area information: Saturday 9th January 2021 Information on a selection of the larger ski areas in the region, listed in alphabetical order. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 674cm Posted on Sunday 10th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. You might have seen the update mid-morning yesterday as those early morning clear blue skies quickly made way for more snow. There were changeable conditions through the day with some periods of clearer skies mixed in with further snow. Not much in terms of cm yesterday and overnight another 13cm has being measured. It is still snowing and a cold morning. The snow should be easing off by tomorrow and maybe from around Tuesday we might get to enjoy some clearer skies with sunshine. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is part open today, with the Batman and Eliza courses open and the Waggonette pair lift operating. The Ropeway connecting GALA with Yuzawa Kogen is not operating, some kind of maintenance going on there. The top quad lift at Iwappara is also back up and running this morning. Other than that things seem to be opening as they have been. Should be excellent snow conditions all round, and very large amounts of it. It looks like areas of Niigata (and other prefectures) nearer the Japan Sea coast got some uncharacteristically heavy snow this last few days. They are of course not quite as used to heavy snow as we are, so it quickly starts to cause all sorts of problems. ----- GALA Yuzawa Central & Northern Areas are fully open; Southern Area part open Official snow depth: 330cm Ishiuchi Maruyama The top link with GALA Yuzawa is now open Official snow depth: Mid: 290cm Base: 200cm Iwappara Top area has re-opened Official snow depth: 260cm Joetsu Kokusai 11 lifts and 16 courses open; Atema area access via Tokamachi side Official snow depth: 290cm Kagura Tashiro and Kagura connection closed; individual Tashiro Area ticket now available (see yesterdays report) Official snow depth: Top: 290cm Base: 240cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 235cm Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: Top: 310cm Base: 260cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 310cm Base: 230cm NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 265cm Naeba Prince Gondola 2 operating and three base lifts; Dragondola closed until 7th February Top: 140cm Base: 120cm Yuzawa Kogen The link with GALA Yuzawa is now open Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 240cm Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 290cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 220cm ----- Floodlit night skiing at ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma Below are the general plans for night skiing during the 2020-2021 season - this information will be checked periodically for any major changes. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 19th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 715cm Posted on Tuesday 19th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The mountains looked spectacular yesterday morning. We enjoyed clear blue skies and sunshine for the morning. Beautiful. Around lunchtime some clouds started to form and it was more of a generally cloudy picture before the end of the day. Overnight have had fresh snow and here is what is being reported by ski areas: Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm Iwappara: 15-25cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Just measured 19cm, so that is what goes on the report this morning. It is snowing still and it is windy... not crazy wind just now down in town, but enough to affect some lift operations and also visibility. In extreme contrast to yesterday morning, this morning it's hard to see much at all. The current conditions mean that the GALA Yuzawa resort is closed for the day today due. The upper areas of Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort are also closed, and there may well be some other lift disruption this morning. Things should be calmer by tomorrow and we're expecting more sun. ----- GALA Yuzawa Closed today due to weather conditions Official snow depth: 290cm Ishiuchi Maruyama The top link with GALA Yuzawa is now open Official snow depth: Mid: 260cm Base: 180cm Iwappara Mid to summit areas open Official snow depth: 235cm Joetsu Kokusai 7 courses open in the main Nagamine area Official snow depth: 260cm Kagura Currently closed Kandatsu Snow Resort Open as normal Official snow depth: 215cm Maiko Snow Resort Upper Okusoeji area closed today due to weather conditions Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 200cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Currently closed NASPA Ski Garden All courses apart from C Course open Official snow depth: 210cm Naeba Currently closed Yuzawa Kogen Top area and Ropeway closed today due to weather conditions Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Yuzawa Nakazato Number 1, 2 and 3 lifts operating Official snow depth: 295cm Yuzawa Park Currently closed on weekdays ----- Various changes to operations at various ski areas at the moment: GALA Yuzawa: The Sociable lift will be closed on weekdays for the time being, with slightly earlier closing times. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 20th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 732cm Posted on Wednesday 20th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So yesterday snow was falling and it was quite windy, causing some ski areas and lifts to be closed for the day. It means that the snow was piling up in ways it hasn't for lots of this season, which has seen a curiously low amount of strong winds so far. Those places are back open this morning as it is a calmer picture. Still some light snow lingering in places early on, but less wind and visibility is improved. This is how much snow is being reported by ski areas: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Iwappara: 25cm Maiko Snow Resort: 0cm (though their official snow depth numbers have increased by 10cm) After clearing away 12cm yesterday evening, there's another 5cm at the measuring point this morning. So there should be a nice new layer of snow out there on the slopes. We are forecast a cloudy morning with the chance of clearer skies later in the day; it should remain cold through the day. Tomorrow will be somewhat warmer and sunshine is forecast for the day. ----- GALA Yuzawa All courses are open Official snow depth: 300cm Ishiuchi Maruyama The top link with GALA Yuzawa is open Official snow depth: Mid: 270cm Iwappara Mid to summit areas open Official snow depth: 255cm Joetsu Kokusai 7 courses open in the main Nagamine area Official snow depth: 270cm Kagura Currently closed Kandatsu Snow Resort Open as normal Official snow depth: 230cm Maiko Snow Resort All open as normal Official snow depth: Top: 310cm Base: 210cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Currently closed NASPA Ski Garden All courses open apart from C Course Official snow depth: 245cm Naeba Currently closed Yuzawa Kogen Opening as planned this morning Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Yuzawa Nakazato Number 1, 2 and 3 lifts operating Official snow depth: 305cm Yuzawa Park Currently closed on weekdays ----- Various changes to operations at various ski areas at the moment: GALA Yuzawa: The Sociable lift will be closed on weekdays for the time being, with slightly earlier closing times. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 23rd January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 732cm Posted on Saturday 23rd January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Well, we weren't able to avoid some rain for a time yesterday but it was clearer skies by evening. This morning it is an all round grey and cloudy start to the day with something of a damp feel with spots of rain in places. A cloudy day is what forecasts are saying the day. Perhaps some snow overnight if we are lucky (some more rain particularly in lower areas if we are not). So here we are at a weekend once again. Yuzawa Park is back up and running for the weekend, Iwappara is open from base to top, and some other ski lifts that were rested during this last week will be operating again. It will be interesting to see how many people are around this weekend. With Kagura, Naeba and Muikamachi Hakkaisan still closed and other ski areas scaled down in this last week, it looked like the ski areas that remained fully open were benefiting from that. Obviously with less choice available skiers were going to check them out and we had a few really great days of weather. Obviously we would so much prefer for everywhere to be fully open every day, as normal, and are really looking forward to hopefully being able to say that again soon. Hope you have a good weekend. ----- GALA Yuzawa All courses are open Official snow depth: 300cm Ishiuchi Maruyama All areas open Official snow depth: Mid: 260cm Iwappara Base to summit areas open Official snow depth: 220cm Joetsu Kokusai 13 courses open in the main Nagamine and Panorama areas Official snow depth: 250cm Kagura Currently closed Kandatsu Snow Resort All areas open Official snow depth: 200cm Maiko Snow Resort All courses open Official snow depth: Top: 275cm Base: 180cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan Currently closed NASPA Ski Garden All courses open Official snow depth: 225cm Naeba Currently closed Yuzawa Kogen All areas open Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Yuzawa Nakazato Number 1, 2, 3 and 5 lifts operating Official snow depth: 300cm Yuzawa Park Number 1, 7 and 8 lifts operating Official snow depth: 160cm ----- Various changes to operations at various ski areas at the moment: GALA Yuzawa: The Sociable lift will be closed on weekdays for the time being, with slightly earlier closing times.
