The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Happy New Year, everyone. I've had my traditional hatsu-toast (first toast of the year) and am ready to get going! Just over 8cm overnight and light snow has been falling (in places) early morning, though it is generally quite bright and I can see hints of blue sky too. No clear views of Mt Yotei for the new year, though, at least at the start of the day. It feels cold this morning and the snow looks good. Snowfall should be continuing at varying rates over the next several days. Annupuri are opening their Panorama and Marchen runs from this morning. So gates aside, pretty much everywhere is open now... weather permitting. At the start of the day today the Niseko Annupuri gondola and top lift is on hold due to wind, though other lifts appear to be opening as planned. I am in the middle of preparing my thoughts on the season so far, and they should be ready to post tomorrow. The site now presents the numbers that I traditionally look at, in some ways making my review redundant. Still, I enjoy thinking about the season and comparing it with previous seasons once a month. I feel it helps keep things in perspective. (By the way, I had kept the 'Large and Dynamic courses are closed' note on the list below after they had opened. My mistake, sorry about that. I am going to go back and edit so that the information is correct. I have also taken out the 'number of lifts operating' info that I had recently added - with some lifts generally not opening, that could be seen as misleading). --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -2C, 8cm new snow, mild blizzard. Moiwa 800m: -5.8℃, WSW8.8m/s, snowdrifts developing. Annupuri 1100m: -8.4C, W7.3m/s, snowdrifts developing. Mizuno no Sawa 1000m: -6.9C, NNW3.4m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -6.9C, SSE0.8m/s, 10cm new snow. Mountain Peak: -10C, light winds, good visibility, 10cm new snow. Coastal Data Cape Benkei: NW16m/s. Cape Kamui: WSW12m/s, pressure 1013hPa, waves 2.0m, Strong winds and snow on the sea and mountains following a weak front. The pressure gradient is expected to increase this morning along with increased snowdrift development at all elevations. After 10am expect the avalanche risk to sharply increase on 40deg slopes and around knolls due to slab formation in the strong winds. Best to not go off course today even if the lifts can run. Avalanches can happen anywhere if the conditions are right. One condition where surface avalanches occur is when a snow slab forms on a slope. The main cause of this is wind, however the sun can also cause surface slab formation. The 1998 Spring Falls avalanche occurred under these conditions. Heavy snowfall can also cause avalanches. So many accidents occur during periods of heavy snow and wind, where large amounts of snow rapidly accumulate on leeward slopes. The 31/12 layer is expected to be a future weak layer, the danger varying depending on elevation. Best to stay off SE facing sidewalls above 1000m. From observations some deeper layers like the 12/23 layer are stable, but be vigilant. All gates are closed. Please follow the patrols instructions. Many people are ducking ropes, this careless behavior causes out of bounds accidents. The temperature is a warm -3c and the high will nudge only a little higher at -2c. A light wind is present. With all the snow coming down visibly is limited but that will improve if the snow stops. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It was snowing on and off yesterday and even quite heavily in some moments, certainly over in Hanazono, where I spent a few hours. It was busy, too. In the end, I have another 11cm to add to the report today. That takes my total observed snowfall for the season so far - at base - to 353cm. I will look at the snowfall numbers and reflect on the season in an upcoming report. There is certainly a lot to reflect on this year, and I have some thoughts I would like to share. Some of the gates aside, most of the mountain (and connections between areas) is open on this last day of the year. Niseko Annupuri still has their Panorama, Marchen and Fukayukirinkan (Deep Snow Forest) courses closed. But as a very nice present from them, they are offering free night skiing from 7:30pm until 11:00pm tonight. (I'm not hearing of other ski areas being similarly generous). We can expect various fireworks and other celebrations, of course. That's it for me this year. Wherever you are in the world, I hope you have a safe New Year's Eve. I'll see you in 2023. Looks like the first week of the new year is going to be snowy... just how like it! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, 5cm new snow, light winds, good visibility, calm. Cape Kamui: SW12m/s, pressure 1019hPa, waves 1.1m, Isobars are spread moderately apart and there has only been minor snowfall and snowdrift development on the mountain. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. As the snow depth is increasing, slope preparation off the top lifts is progressing. Groomer condition is absolutely gorgeous. Only a little snow fell overnight, slopes are not reset but it's easy riding. Watch your speed and hitting a tree. Be careful. Don't duck ropes looking for fresh snow. One set of tracks can cause lots of other people to follow, increasing the chance of an accident. Gates 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are not open yet, the lack of snow makes rescue operations difficult. Gates 6 and 10 have limited openings, but there is insufficient snow to ride out the bottom. Cut out early, don't descend too deeply. Niseko respects the freedom to ride out of bounds, but is always concerned about your safety. It should remain like this for most of the day with wind (where it occurs higher up and not that strong today) coming down. There is a chance if very light snow later in the day. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The ski area is reporting 10-11cm of fresh snow on upper areas since yesterday, with just a few cm of that coming in overnight. Just a bit of new snow down at lower levels. It's cloudy this morning with somewhat limited visibility on the top of the mountain, though some blue sky visible in some areas. So it's New Year's Eve and so special night skiing and New Years Countdown tonight. Night skiing is until 11:30pm with the countdown event and fireworks from midnight. I'm guessing that Naski will be turning up to celebrate. Look out for that always-friendly and smiley bright green vegetable! (You can see Naski on the third photo this morning; usually turns up for work there just after 8am). There's some heavy snow on the forecasts over the first few days of 2023. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's a beautiful morning here in Hakuba. Hakubatastic, even. Just look at those mountains. Stunning. Cold too. A fine afternoon yesterday as the early morning clouds parted to some degree. We still had a fair amount of clouds around, but some blue sky too. No snowfall is being reported by ski areas overnight. And here we are on this last day of the year with mostly clear blue skies. There will be various celebrations going on tonight. I bet a few of you might even have a drink or two. Take care on the slopes and in the bars, and be ready for more fresh snow in the new year. As promised I have made some changes to the list this morning. I'm starting up the reporting of the 'total snowfall accumulation' numbers that Hakuba Valley put out. (Please take them for what they are; step back, look at the big picture rather than the minute detail. I say this because at times they don't seem to change and also it is unclear when exactly they started. And how can the total snowfall be less than the current snow depth at Happo-one?!, etc. Hmmm). As you probably know, Hakuba Sanosaka ski area has re-opened this season with two lifts operating. They are calling themselves White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka this season. Yesterday was windy with snow being blown about all over the place, but I am happy to report that it is much calmer this morning. It is cloudy with some signs of clear sky too, so it should be a good morning especially with the fresh snow to enjoy. The clearer weather probably won't last long. All lifts up and running and night skiing until January 3rd. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a cold start to the day with -9c. The temperature will rise to a warmish -2c as the day progresses. There is low cloud enveloping the top half of the resort but looks like it will lift - visibility is good on the lower mountain and fair at elevation. There is some light snow falling and wind conditions are calm. All lift are operating except for the magic carpets. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. We have had another steady on-off delivery of snow since yesterday and I have just measured 19cm since my last report. At the moment there is still a lot of clouds around, but there is also some blue sky and it is quite bright in places. Then again, it is also snowing lightly in places. Generally some very fine conditions to be out there, I'd say. There might not be much more in terms of new cm during the day today and tomorrow, with more due to be falling as we get into the New Year. This morning the top lifts at Hirafu (King 4) and Village (Wonderland) and Annupuri (Jumbo Number 4) are all scheduled to be open. Hurray! (Though we might have to wait longer for gates...) ----- This is not Niseko-related, but have you ever heard of a ski area called Windsor Snow Village? It's a small ski area about 50km south of here, near Lake Toya and part of the posh hotel resort that hosted the G8 Summit in 2008. They don't seem to publicise themselves (as a ski area), but apparently, anyone can use it, so you don't need to be a guest at the hotel. I wasn't aware that their two ski lifts were once part of a larger ski area called Snow Park Toya. If you are interested in that story, there's more here. While we're on that subject, I do recommend looking through the individual ski area pages in the cunningly named Ski Areas section of this site. I believe all introductions have been rewritten over the last six months, and a lot of new information has been added in 2022. There are certainly some interesting stories to discover. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5℃, light winds, 20cm new snow in last 12hrs, calm. Moiwa 800m: -7.6℃, WSW10.0m/s, 20cm new snow, slow snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -9.3℃, SSW4.6m/s, 30cm new snow, snowdrift development. Hanazono Hirafu 1000m: -10.5℃, W1.5m/s, 10cm new snow. Niseko Village 1000m: -9.9℃, NNW4.5m/s. The isobar spacing is getting wider and the wind is starting to drop. Seas are still high though. From observations and tests, the avalanche risk is decreasing, however cornices above 800m will still easily collapse. Snow in the trees is good. Above 1000m, snow drift consolidation is delayed on the upper part of the steep open slopes and around knolls. The avalanche risk will continue in these areas. Stay out of Back Bowl and off Osawa side wall this morning. Top lifts are expected to operate, however gates above 1000m are not open yet. Do not duck ropes to ride outside the resort areas. Today is much better than yesterday. Watch your speed and hitting a tree. Still not one of the massive loads that we often get here, with the ski area itself reporting 10cm. I measured a bit more than that. As I write this visibility is fairly decent with light snow falling and that is pretty much what is forecast for the day. It looks like tomorrow and the first day of 2023 will be calm with perhaps some sun, before more snow coming our way as we head into Monday.
