- Niseko Now: Sunday 22nd January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 561cm Posted on Sunday 22nd January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, it doesn't feel too windy right now, but we have had some windy conditions since I last spoke with you. The wind perhaps explains why the snowfall numbers reported this morning are quite varied. Hirafu are reporting 25cm, Hanazono are reporting 18-37cm and Annupuri are going with their fave 10cm. (Village, of course, are still holding out on 0cm - I think we can just ignore that). The Avalanche Report is being a bit shy with numbers. And 8cm of snow has been recorded at the Kutchan town JMA station since my report yesterday. At my primary measuring point that I use, I have 12cm to report to you. It is cold this morning and currently -9C outside my place. -18C up at Village?! It is going to be a very cold week, particularly around Tuesday and Wednesday. There is also probably going to be a steady ongoing delivery of fresh snow. I advise being ready with extra layers and appropriate goggles. Possible snorkels too. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -10C, light winds, heavy snowfall at dawn. Moiwa 800m: -12.7C, W9.5m/s, minor snowdrift development from W wind. Annupuri 1100m: -15.7C, WNW9.4m/s, moderate winds, cornice and snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -14.9C, NNW9.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.5C, N7.2m/s. Hanzono#3: -12.7C, N5.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW13m/s, Kamui Cape NW10m/s, 1024hPa, 2.1m wave. The winter pressure pattern to the west is weakening, however cornice and snowdrift development is steadily continuing with moderate winds on the mountain. While snowdrift depth is increasing they are remaining stable. The general avalanche risk is low except on Kozan no Sawa sidewall, Osawa cornice slope and HigashiOne cornice face and other open steep slopes around 1000m. If an avalanche occurs at 1100m it will run long and fast and you won't have a chance to get out of the way. Do not hang around in gullies or in the valley bottoms. The snow is reset again. If snow and wind>15m/s continue, leeward snowdrift accumulations will become unstable and fracture easily. Even within the same storm, the avalanche risk will vary depending on the strength of the wind. Pay attention to wind strength and any change in snowfall. There is no safe place in the cold mountains. Please listen to patrols instructions. Have a good day. --------------- Ski area information for Sunday 22nd January 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The Chuo bowl has a softer thicker layer. Blue patches around and, at the moment, only the summit is in a bit of cloud. It will get cloudier later on with a touch of snow. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's cold this morning! I believe some thermometers have been showing as low as -17C and -18C. Conditions should be good this morning and they will be getting even better if we get our snow in the coming week. Wednesday and Thursday is due to be the peak of the upcoming cold front. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Cold and pretty clear today in Myoko, with thin, high clouds over most of the sky. Really beautiful morning, though, with sparkly facets on the surface of the snow, snow-frosted trees and those beautiful (and increasingly white) mountains out there. Got down to about -10°C last night (the cause of those sparkles on the snow surface), which should make for some good skiing. - Niseko Now: Saturday 21st January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 549cm Posted on Saturday 21st January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Cold, wind and snow. It's a bit wild this morning. Lots of lifts are sitting it out at the start of the day. Basically, it's limited operations and lower mountain only at the start of the day. The snowfall numbers from Hirafu (see list below) are curious this morning. It might be the wind (blowing it about), but more likely just left over numbers that haven't been updated since yesterday. Niseko Village is still stuck on 0cm every morning. I'll be making some further comments on that kind of thing early next week. Weather conditions are not very friendly this morning and dangers are increased. Extra care is required. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report MMountain base -6C, 20cm new snow, blizzard, 80cm snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -9.8C, WNW19.1m, strong wind and snow, major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -12.7C, NW9.8m/s, blizzard, cornice and snowdrift development, grooming difficulties on upper mountain. Mizuno no Sawa: -11.2C, N12.2m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: NNE12.2m/s. Hanzono#3: -9.3C, N8.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW12m/s, Kamui Cape NNE10m/s, 1018hPa, 3.6m wave. The passing low pressure system has brought stormy conditions to the coast and mountains. There is rapid snowdrift development at all elevations due to the strong N wind. The avalanche risk is extreme, all gates will be closed. Please listen to and follow patrol`s instructions. Snowdrifts are deep and heavy and have piled up without any consolidation making grooming difficult as the snow doesn't want to compact. Around 10am the isobars are expected to loosen up and the wind drop. However on steep slopes and around knolls the risk of 100cm avalanches will continue. The surrounding mountains will all have the same avalanche conditions. Be careful of frostbite. The weather will improve temporarily tomorrow. Visibility is poor, be careful on the roads. --------------- Ski area information for Saturday 21st January 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. - Shiga Kogen Now: Saturday 21st January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 238cm Posted on Saturday 21st January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Yes, a nice layer of snow this morning and some cold temperatures. Yakebitaiyama are reporting about 20cm and I reckon there might be up to 30cm in places due to the windy conditions we had overnight which have been blowing it around. The amount varies across the region, and I have measured 12cm. Things have calmed down considerably this morning. It is still quite windy and it is still snowing in places but it is also quite bright. The sun is breaking through the (many) clouds at Okushiga Kogen, for example.
