The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And what a morning it should be. We have a really good new layer of snow from overnight. I have just measured 24cm and, as you can see below, Hirafu is reporting 38cm and Hanazono reporting 32cm on their upper areas. Once again, it's very fine looking snow. Niseko doesn't specialise in some of the truly bonkers snowfall that places in Honshu can sometimes suddenly receive. (Last season, the most I recorded in any one report was 40cm). Niseko specialities definitely include consistency and quality of snow*. And toast, of course. Conditions should be excellent again this morning. It is still snowing lightly but quite bright too. Visibility looks decent and wind shouldn't mess with any plans. * Not that other places don't. (Before anyone gets overly-sensitive!) ** Niseko Village are still stuck on their '0cm' of new snowfall. (Doh!) --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -10C, light wind, 25cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -12.6C, W7.1m/s, 30cm new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -15.4C, WNW6.9m/s, 30cm new snow. Mizuno no Sawa: -14.0C, NNW6.2m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.0C,NW2.2m/s. Hanazono#3: -12.1C, NNW4.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW16m/s, Kamui Cape WSW12m/s, 1002hPa, 1.5m waves. The low pressure system to the south has moved east and we are now in a typical winter high west/east low pressure pattern. The westerly wind is around 10m/s, however with heavy snowfall cornice and snowdrift development continues slowly. Above 800m the wind and snow is expected to pick up as the isobars tighten today. From observation and tests, snowdrifts are stable and the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrols instructions. Do not duck ropes to go out of bounds - use the gates. In strictly off limits areas, the south facing Haru no Taki and SE facing Yu no Sawa, there is the possibility of deep fractures and slab avalanches due to the heavy snowfall and sun . Do not enter. At this time there is always the risk of avalanche at high elevation Kozan no Sawa sidewall, Annupuri Osawa cornice face and HigashiOne cornice face. Do not ride hear without consideration. Traversing under cornices and simultaneous riding can trigger an avalanche at any elevation. Beware. Do not wait in valley bottoms or at the bottom of open slopes. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . More fresh snow last night and the slopes are nice. A bit murky in the usual places (Paradise/Utopia/Hyakumannin) but otherwise just fog restricting long range views. Expect it to snow lightly throughout the day with more coming overnight to usher in Sunday. Wind is less than originally anticipated, however, there are or will be strong winds around. Not sure how this will affect the second stage Zao Ropeway or Kurohime Quad. Personally, I wouldn't bother going up to the summit today - there is plenty elsewhere with better visibility and less people. Those staying here longer than the weekend, make the most of the Ryuzan (far left) and top Yokokura lifts as they only operate on the weekend/public holidays. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good snowfall again overnight and a lot of people lining up eager go get on the gondola at the start of the day. The ski area is reporting 50cm of snow on the upper areas and 35-45cm around base areas. Lots of beautiful fresh snow - conditions should be deep and a lot of fun this morning. Visibility looks limited on the mountain and we are expecting more snow. It remains cold. Good times. Remember, take care out there. (Yesterday, the ski area appeared to update their morning snowfall numbers after they originally posted them. I'm really not sure what was going on there, but will keep my beady eye on it and try to work it out. Naski is probably busy for the weekend and famously doesn't over-read the numbers. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Another cold morning. It is one of those times when there has been a lot more snow in northern areas of the region (Otari village) than the southern sections of Hakuba. So some very different numbers depending on where you are this morning. Hakuba Cortina ski area is reporting a very healthy 50cm of snowfall around base areas, apparently, while Goryu and 47 are reporting more like 10cm. My measurement for the morning at 8:45am is 14cm. More snow is due over the coming days. Perhaps not a whole lot during today, Monday is looking good for some decent numbers again. Visibility is limited this morning but ski areas appear to be opening as planned. ----- Oi!! How come the report/webcam image says 8:30am (for example) but it only appears at 9:00am (for example)?! Something like that would probably be because it actually takes time to put the report together. Incredibly, all the information in these reports does not just instantly 'appear' from nowhere. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have just measured a lovely 24cm of fresh snowfall to report to you this morning. And less wind too. Fabulous. There's some cloud and some blue sky, though more snow is due so this clearer spell might not (probably won't) last. I expect lifts should be opening as planned this morning. Conditions should be unbearably fine this morning. And that has absolutely nothing to do with my abnormally early report. Honest! Annupuri 1100m: -14.3C, WSW4.8m/s, 30cm new snow, cornice and significant snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -13.1C, NW2.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -14.3C, N1.1m/s. Hanazono#3: -11.2C, NNW1.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW6m/s, Kamui Cape SW8m/s, 1011hPa, 1.9m waves. The storm has passed, the isobars are spreading out and snowdrift development has slowed. Based on this morning's observation and data analysis the overall avalanche risk is starting to drop. Slab stability is delayed on NE facing slopes like Mikaeri Bowl sidewall where the strong winds have formed a crust. Be careful on steep slopes where the surface is wind rippled, large areas could let go suddenly. SE facing snowdrifts have started to stabilize, however on Kozan no Sawa sidewall above 1000m, upper Osawa and HigashiOne cornice slope, a significant avalanche risk remains. Mid slope traversing and multiple riders is not recommended in these areas. Valley bottoms become avalanche paths and should always be avoided. When crossing valleys is unavoidable or when going down steep slopes , keep a sufficient distance and go one at a time. Gates are scheduled to open but will be delayed. Please follow the patrols instructions. There is no safety in this sport. Guides and leaders always have a big responsibility. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . More snow again last night. There should be a bit more coming later in the day. The morning started promisingly with the summit clear, however, cloud it is now in cloud. Elsewhere it is overcast but there might be a few sunny spells during the morning. Make the most of the tops today as strong wind is expected tomorrow so there could also be a few lift closures. The snow monsters near the top are growing back valiantly. Whether the forthcoming snow and wind will help remains to be seen. In the meantime, enjoy the fresh layer! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday, I did indeed go and check the snow. And fine it was too. All in the name of duty of course. The things I have to do for you all! This morning the ski area is reporting another 10cm in lower areas and 17cm at Yamabiko. There was 3cm reported by Yamabiko at 3pm yesterday, making it 20cm up there since yesterday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have another tidy 10+cm of fresh snow to report this morning, delivered on and off since my last report and mostly after dark. Strong winds kept me awake for a time late last night. It's better to have the wind overnight than during the day, I suppose. Hopefully the wind won't be quite as strong today, but it is still affecting a few lifts early on (Annupuri gondola and top lifts). It remains very cold, down below -10C outside my place now. Regular snowfall is expected across the coming week. Conditions should be super! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -12C, 20cm snowfall, windblown snow. Moiwa 800m: -14.7C, WSW11.3m/s, significant snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -17.7C, WNW13.3m/s, significant snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -16.1C, NNW7.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -17.4C, SSE3.0m/s. Hanazono#3: -14.5C, NNW8.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW19m/s, Kamui cape WNW13m/s, 1010hPa, 3.6m waves. Wave heights have dropped from 6m to 3m and the isobar is beginning to spread out. According to the observation at 5am, westerly wind is still blowing strong over 800m elevation. Based on the observation, tests, and snowfall transition, avalanche risk is high on ridgeline leeward slopes over 800m elevation where snowdrifts have developed rapidly. The winds will come down at 10:00am and top lifts will open, but the gates opening is yet to be decided. Please follow the patrol's instructions. Do not stimulate knolls. Do not traverse steep slopes under cornices. When traversing gullies and under the sidewalls, keep the distance and traverse one person at a time. Beware of crashing into trees. Avalanche risk remains high all day on Kozan no sawa, westridge at 1000m elevation, Annupuri Osawa cornice slopes, and East ridge. Better to be cautious even if the weather recovers. The conditions are the same in the surrounding mountains. Guides and leaders have a great responsibility. Plan your tours wisely. Tree-runs have been reset with new snow. Beware of falling, crashing into trees and choking.
