The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The ski area is reporting up to 27cm of snow since yesterday morning on upper areas, it has been more like 10-15cm in lower areas. There has been light snow falling this morning but down at base it has eased off and there's even a bit of sun. As you can see from the images below, early on this morning it looks like there's limited viz up top... but the sun is shining on Naski (who is looking particularly happy this morning) over there at Hikage base. Perhaps lots of this cloud will clear up today? Let's see. Tomorrow should be starting with some sunshine, and then we might get some snow overnight into Sunday. Sounds good. After that fresh snowfall I got to report yesterday, there's a bit of a dusting (the 1cm in my report is a bit of a stretch), but no cm of snow being reported by ski areas this morning. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. After a windy day yesterday and some lift disruption, today should be somewhat calmer (though not calm - might still be windy up there). There is another layer of snow to report. I measured 14cm and both Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting up to 25cm on the mountain. I need to post my report before opening time this morning, but I imagine lifts will be opening as scheduled. Visibility currently looks rather limited out there... ----- A look back at the season so far: until the end of January 2023 As always, I will begin with my observed snowfall numbers. Remember, these numbers are observed by me, observed close to the base of Hirafu. This season so far, up to and including 31st January 2023, I have observed snowfall on 59 days: 5 days in November 2022 27 days in December 2022 27 days in January 2023 Since 1st December 2022, there have only been 8 days when I was not able to report any cm of fresh snowfall around base areas. And 4 of those days came together that wonky stretch around mid-January. I remember around that time, Japan was getting properly toasty all round. Pretty impressive. So far, the most snowfall on any day was 24cm on the 27th and 28th of January. In general, the numbers have been pretty consistent all the way through, often in the 10-20cm range. This data, updated daily with each report, can be found on the Season archive page here: 2022-2023 season (data from this season) This is how much snowfall I have measured during January over the last eleven seasons: January 2023: 332cm January 2022: 325cm January 2021: 387cm January 2020: 224cm January 2019: 285cm January 2018: 305cm January 2017: 152cm January 2016: 303cm January 2015: 257cm January 2014: 461cm January 2013: 443cm So in pure numbers, January 2023 was very similar to January 2022. 332cm is also just over the average (316cm) over the last 11 seasons. Here's how much snowfall I have observed up until the end of January in each of the seasons: 2022/2023 season up to the end of January 2023: 685cm 2021/2022 season up to the end of January 2022: 717cm 2020/2021 season up to the end of January 2021: 797cm 2019/2020 season up to the end of January 2020: 516cm 2018/2019 season up to the end of January 2019: 702cm 2017/2018 season up to the end of January 2018: 899cm 2016/2017 season up to the end of January 2017: 443cm 2015/2016 season up to the end of January 2016: 608cm 2014/2015 season up to the end of January 2015: 806cm 2013/2014 season up to the end of January 2014: 859cm 2012/2013 season up to the end of January 2013: 979cm The average of those 11 years is about 728cm. So we are actually a little behind on that number. Numbers alone, of course, don't say anything about quality. But the wonky bit aside, the season continues to be consistent and very pleasing indeed! Most visitors will surely have been pleased with the snow, hopefully living up to the lofty expectations. Here is how much of the total snowfall for the whole season we have already had fallen on us by the end of January in previous seasons: By the end of January 2022, as a % of the season total: about 63% By the end of January 2021, as a % of the season total: about 66% By the end of January 2020, as a % of the season total: about 71% By the end of January 2019, as a % of the season total: about 74% By the end of January 2018, as a % of the season total: about 71% By the end of January 2017, as a % of the season total: about 65% By the end of January 2016, as a % of the season total: about 61% By the end of January 2015, as a % of the season total: about 70% By the end of January 2014, as a % of the season total: about 74% By the end of January 2013, as a % of the season total: about 66% Looking at previous seasons, we expect to have received 60-70% of the total season snowfall by the end of January. Moiwa 800m: -12.4C, W10.8m/s, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -15.4C, cornice and snowdrift development, difficult grooming conditions. Mizuno no Sawa: -13.9C, NNW4.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.2C, SSW2.7m/s. Hanazono#3: -12.3C, N7.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW12m/s, Kamui Cape W9m/s, 1018hPa, 2.5m waves. The wind is starting to drop, however above 800m a strong W wind and snowdrift development continues. Cornices and snowdrifts are fracturing deeply at 1.5m. From observation, data and snowfall transition the Niseko mountains general avalanche risk is starting to drop, however above 1000m Annupuri Osawa cornice slope, Kozan no Sawa sidewall and on the HigashiOne cornice slope a high avalanche risk remains. There has been heavy snow deposits over the relatively weak Feb1 layer, plus this heavy accumulation of wind blown snow is slow to stabilize. Gates 2, 3 and 4 will be closed. Other gates yet to be decided. Please respect the Patrol's decisions. Even at low altitudes avoid the valley bottom, creeks or stopping below steep slopes in Kozan no Sawa, Osawa and HigashiOne. An avalanche can easily raze a valley. Snow in the trees is heavy but not too bad. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A significant dump last night albeit with the slight rise in temperature, a bit heavy. Fog on the mountain but mostly clear to see in front of you. Wind is up today so there may be some closures. I'd suggest enjoying lower down first. Although not snowing now, it should snow lightly during the day. There may also be patches of clarity - the mountains on the other end of the distant valley are in bright light. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A late start today; the trusty turbo snowthrower decided to throw one of his treads last night as I dug out the roof of my house. OK, I helped by getting him partly buried when the roof released, but it's a big job ahead with some heavy machines involved to get him back into running order. As the snow keeps piling up... A nice fall of fairly dense snow overnight has the trees covered in white.. .well, everything is white this morning (including my snowthrower). No complaints, though; should be a great day for skiing. Take a little care if you're going off the resort, because the now could sluff pretty easily, which would not be fun if you're in the wrong place (like in a gully, or about to slide into one). Get all your gear on, go with a team and take it a little easy. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. I did not venture out yesterday evening and so I will have missed any rain*, and I am very happy to report that we had some good snowfall overnight. The ski area reports a uniform 25-30cm across the mountain. Great stuff. Wind affected at least the Nagasaka Gondola, Skyline pair and Uenotaira quad at times yesterday and wind is also forecast for today. Lifts seem to be moving as planned at the start of the day. Fingers crossed it will stay that way. Currently it is -3C and it will keep colder than it was yesterday. The snow clouds are still above us with light snow falling in places, but it's not due to last. Expect a mostly cloudy day and perhaps more of that tomorrow with the chance of light snow at times. Let's headlines! - Hakuba Cortina: 47cm at base - Hakuba Goryu: 45cm (upper) - Hakuba 47: 20-35cm - Hakuba Happo-one: 25-30cm (upper), 12cm (Nakiyama) Nice. :) After that fine start yesterday, and some relatively mild conditions during the day, it gradually clouded over and snow started coming down in the afternoon. It was quite heavy at times evening onwards, with a bit more overnight. At the start of the day today we still have cloud around, but also blue sky and the sun breaking through the clouds in places. It should be an excellent morning. Just one downer to mention: sounds like it is quite windy out there. And, we have another impressive amount of snowfall on the ground. 50cm or so, with the ski area reporting 67cm on upper areas. We are expecting more during the day. Hopefully, wind will not be an issue. From tomorrow some generally clearer and calm weather looks due, though knowing Geto Kogen, light snow probably will never be that far away. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I do have some more fine snow to report to you this morning but, alas, wind is going to be a major topic today. The windy conditions we are experiencing at the moment are going to be affecting what is open today. Here's lifts affected and not moving at the start of the day: - Hanazono lifts closed (but the Gondola is open) - Niseko Village gondola - Niseko Annupuri gondola and top lifts - All top lifts closed The lift situation may change, of course, but wind is forecast for the day. All the gates will be closed as well. It is one of those days when we can expect stashes of snow courtesy of the wind and some varying snowfall numbers. (Perhaps that's why Niseko Village are reporting 0cm today. Oh, I am being naughty! I jest with affection). There will be much fun to be had if you want to brave the conditions this morning, but take extra care out there and take note of the avalanche report. Further snowfall is forecast on and off through into next week. Monthly review/recap thingy coming tomorrow. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Max 25-30m/s gusts were recorded at various observation points and a large amount of new snow has fallen. Snowdrift development is significant in both mountain base and on the slopes. The snow is heavy and wind affected, and can instantly collapse with deep fracture by stimulation. Avalanche risk is extremely high on the slopes above 700m elevation, knolls and cornice slopes that drop into the tree lines. The isobars have moved slightly further apart and the wind on the seas has dropped, but the wind and snow continues on the mountain until the afternoon. All the peak gates will be closed. Do not duck ropes to go into gullies even if the chair lifts are open. The condition is the same in the surrounding mountains. There’s an avalanche risk even in the tree runs below 800m elevation considering the snowfall transition. Better be cautious riding there today. This information is issued for all resort users to prevent accidents in Niseko area. It’s better to take it easy today. Fine weather this morning, but we are expecting it to be snowing from early afternoon and we might get a decent amount as well. All sounds good to me. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -8C, trace new snow, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -10.5C, NNE2.0m/s, trace new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -13.3C, W2.8m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -12.0C, WSW1.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -13.0C, WSW5.4m/s. Hanazono#3: -9.0C, WSW6.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape S2m/s, Kamui CapeSW8m/s, 1012hPa, 1.3m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow and the seas and mountains are calm. From observation, data, patrol and groomer reports the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before going out the gates. Beacons are not mandatory but are recommended, they can save your life or someone else's. Do not enter strictly off limits areas Haru noTaki or Yu no Sawa.
