A little bit of unexpected snow overnight, just enough to add a little more to the snowpack and keep things soft on top. It was foggy earlier, but it's brightened up a bit now, so the snow is sliding off the roofs and falling off the power lines. Not so romantic an image, I guess, but one that helps us out in clearing up homes and shops. The temperature is still below zero, though, so the snow condition should remain good. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The ski area is reporting up to 27cm of snow since yesterday morning on upper areas, it has been more like 10-15cm in lower areas. There has been light snow falling this morning but down at base it has eased off and there's even a bit of sun. As you can see from the images below, early on this morning it looks like there's limited viz up top... but the sun is shining on Naski (who is looking particularly happy this morning) over there at Hikage base. Perhaps lots of this cloud will clear up today? Let's see. Tomorrow should be starting with some sunshine, and then we might get some snow overnight into Sunday. Sounds good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I do have some more fine snow to report to you this morning but, alas, wind is going to be a major topic today. The windy conditions we are experiencing at the moment are going to be affecting what is open today. Here's lifts affected and not moving at the start of the day: - Hanazono lifts closed (but the Gondola is open) - Niseko Village gondola - Niseko Annupuri gondola and top lifts - All top lifts closed The lift situation may change, of course, but wind is forecast for the day. All the gates will be closed as well. It is one of those days when we can expect stashes of snow courtesy of the wind and some varying snowfall numbers. (Perhaps that's why Niseko Village are reporting 0cm today. Oh, I am being naughty! I jest with affection). There will be much fun to be had if you want to brave the conditions this morning, but take extra care out there and take note of the avalanche report. Further snowfall is forecast on and off through into next week. Monthly review/recap thingy coming tomorrow. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Max 25-30m/s gusts were recorded at various observation points and a large amount of new snow has fallen. Snowdrift development is significant in both mountain base and on the slopes. The snow is heavy and wind affected, and can instantly collapse with deep fracture by stimulation. Avalanche risk is extremely high on the slopes above 700m elevation, knolls and cornice slopes that drop into the tree lines. The isobars have moved slightly further apart and the wind on the seas has dropped, but the wind and snow continues on the mountain until the afternoon. All the peak gates will be closed. Do not duck ropes to go into gullies even if the chair lifts are open. The condition is the same in the surrounding mountains. There’s an avalanche risk even in the tree runs below 800m elevation considering the snowfall transition. Better be cautious riding there today. This information is issued for all resort users to prevent accidents in Niseko area. It’s better to take it easy today. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A significant dump last night albeit with the slight rise in temperature, a bit heavy. Fog on the mountain but mostly clear to see in front of you. Wind is up today so there may be some closures. I'd suggest enjoying lower down first. Although not snowing now, it should snow lightly during the day. There may also be patches of clarity - the mountains on the other end of the distant valley are in bright light. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A late start today; the trusty turbo snowthrower decided to throw one of his treads last night as I dug out the roof of my house. OK, I helped by getting him partly buried when the roof released, but it's a big job ahead with some heavy machines involved to get him back into running order. As the snow keeps piling up... A nice fall of fairly dense snow overnight has the trees covered in white.. .well, everything is white this morning (including my snowthrower). No complaints, though; should be a great day for skiing. Take a little care if you're going off the resort, because the now could sluff pretty easily, which would not be fun if you're in the wrong place (like in a gully, or about to slide into one). Get all your gear on, go with a team and take it a little easy. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. I did not venture out yesterday evening and so I will have missed any rain*, and I am very happy to report that we had some good snowfall overnight. The ski area reports a uniform 25-30cm across the mountain. Great stuff. Wind affected at least the Nagasaka Gondola, Skyline pair and Uenotaira quad at times yesterday and wind is also forecast for today. Lifts seem to be moving as planned at the start of the day. Fingers crossed it will stay that way. Currently it is -3C and it will keep colder than it was yesterday. The snow clouds are still above us with light snow falling in places, but it's not due to last. Expect a mostly cloudy day and perhaps more of that tomorrow with the chance of light snow at times. It was quite heavy at times evening onwards, with a bit more overnight. At the start of the day today we still have cloud around, but also blue sky and the sun breaking through the clouds in places. It should be an excellent morning. Just one downer to mention: sounds like it is quite windy out there. The gondola and upper lifts at Happo-one are not opening as planned due to windy conditions on mountain. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's another cold morning with 5+cm of snow to report since yesterday. Fine weather this morning, but we are expecting it to be snowing from early afternoon and we might get a decent amount as well. All sounds good to me. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -8C, trace new snow, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -10.5C, NNE2.0m/s, trace new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -13.3C, W2.8m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -12.0C, WSW1.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -13.0C, WSW5.4m/s. Hanazono#3: -9.0C, WSW6.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape S2m/s, Kamui CapeSW8m/s, 1012hPa, 1.3m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow and the seas and mountains are calm. From observation, data, patrol and groomer reports the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before going out the gates. Beacons are not mandatory but are recommended, they can save your life or someone else's. Do not enter strictly off limits areas Haru noTaki or Yu no Sawa. Do not duck ropes to ride the Eesawa lift line in the Annupuri Gate 7 area, this is an off limits area. One set of tracks leads others to follow. This is within the ski area and rules must be followed. The snow is good. Watch for a sudden change in the weather this afternoon.
