Bit of a southerly wind going on as well but it does not seem to be affecting lifts, at least at the start of the day. After some possible snow later on today (possibly even from this morning) and overnight tonight, the weekend is still looking likely to be generally fine and calm - and a bit mild, especially on Sunday. The great news is that there's decent looking snowfall lined up from the early next week, starting Monday. When I got up this morning it was just cloudy but snow has started falling and it's coming down quite nicely as I prepare this report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Bit windy this morning, with the top lifts on hold at the start of the day. The Niseko Gondola (at Niseko Village) and the Annupuri Gondola are also not opening on time. All other lifts appear to be moving as planned. It is quite cold this morning and snowing - lightly in places and coming down harder in others. As I write this, heavily at Niseko Village; not so much over at Hanazono. That means that visibility is also rather varied, though generally quite poor higher up on the mountain. The forecasts seem to be saying tomorrow should just be cloudy, and while we might not get heavy snow across the coming days the snow clouds probably won't be far away. They like Niseko. Wind and visibility are the main thing early on. Take care out there. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -7C, 15cm new snow, stormy. Moiwa800m: -11.5C, WNW13.6m/s, stormy, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -14.7C, NNW8.4m/s, stormy, poor visibility, snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -13.1C, N8.8.m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -14.1C, NNE12.6m/s. Hanazono#3: -11.6C, NNE6.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape N17m/s, Kamui cape N13m/s, 1022hPa, 2.7m waves. Waves are high at the sea with the strong northerly winds as the atmospheric pressure gradient steepend. It is very stormy in the mountains. Snowdrifts are rapidly growing on the slopes over 800m elevation. Avalanche risk increases on the leeward side slopes over the 800m elevation as the wind comes down in the afternoon. Gates opening is yet to be decided. Please follow patrols instructions. Better not to ride the steep leeward slopes where wind-blown snow has accumulated today. There is an avalanche risk on Annupuri Osawa cornice slopes and Higashi one cornice slopes even at the lower elevation. Do not traverse across these slopes. Snow in the tree run at the lower elevation is good today. Beware of crashing into trees. With the increase in the number of resort users, the number of people ducking ropes is increasing. If one person ducks a rope, many will follow. As a result, avalanche accidents risk increases. Niseko recorded the highest avalanche fatalities in Japan 30 years ago when there was no Niseko Rules. The rules were created out of necessity. These rules were not created to promote tourism. Please respect and understand the rules. This area will be in a high-pressure system tomorrow and the wind will come down. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There has been 10cm of fresh snow overnight and the mountain is looking very inviting this morning. The sun is out and it is mostly blue sky weather. There is a moderate wind at the base of the mountain and this will be stronger at higher elevations. Visibility is good and the quality of the overnight snow is excellent. It continues to snow lightly this morning but should cease later in the day with a chance of some sun. Mid-levels up is foggy with some areas forcing a slow pace to see adequately. A bit of wind is about too and with temperatures back down again, the wind chill is making it quite cold so wrap up. With the 3cm reported at Yamabiko yesterday early evening, the ski area has said there is 5-10cm around base areas and 22-26cm on upper areas since yesterday. That layer up top sounds nice and should give us a decent reset. We might get a bit more today and tomorrow - though not massive amounts expected. It should be keeping colder than the last few days. Currently around -1.5C at base. Clearer skies and mild temps are forecast for the weekend and then a return to snow and cold early week. It was snowing in the afternoon yesterday - some nice big flakes actually - when I was up at 47, and we do have some fresh snow down to base this morning. As I write this, the sun is breaking through some clouds and there is some blue sky away from the mountains, but it is also snowing. (It's really cool when that happens). Visibility up on the mountains looks quite limited in places and it is likely snowing more up there. Ski areas themselves are reporting modest amounts of snowfall, the most coming in from Hakuba Cortina who report up to 20cm of fresh. Right now it is just under -3C and feels colder. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is snowing as I write this, and some lovely big flakes at times too. Visibility seems fairly ok from what I can see on the cams. Mostly light snow is due today and into tomorrow. With just a light wind, all lifts are opening as planned. The only other thing of note to mention this morning is that Niseko Village are reporting 10cm of fresh snow up top this morning! (Regular readers will know the significance of this). --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -8C, good visibility, light snowfall. Moiwa800m: -8.7C, WSW4.7m/s, light snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -12.4C, WNW5.8m/s. Mizuno no Sawa top: NNW3.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -12.2C, WNW1.6m/s. Hanazono#3: -8.9C, WSW1.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW6m/s, Kamui cape WNW8m/s, 1019hPa, 0.8m waves. Light wind and snowfall on the sea and the mountains. Cold air inflow is persisting. The overall avalanche risk is low and the gates will open from the morning. Be prepared for the backcountry when going out of bounds. Do not enter strictly off-limits areas to find fresh tracks. Those south facing steep slopes could slide at any time. Also beware of traversing gullies in the NW facing slopes off of the peak. These slopes are covered in sasa-bamboo and 300cm thick massive glide avalanches reaching down to the road occurred in the past. Make sure to traverse across gullies one by one, keeping a safe distance between each other. Traversing steep sections is dangerous. It is much safer to head westward from around Chinpoko-Rock located around 1050m elevation. Following random tracks could leave you astray, be conscious of your current location. There are no buses back from Goshiki Onsen. This report is issued for accident prevention of Niseko resorts visitors. Have you switched your beacon on? It is a cold morning at -17c, but there will be a dramatic warming up during the day to -4c. There is no wind and snow conditions on and off trail are excellent. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . We've started off mostly sunny (where it left off yesterday) although there is a misty patch over the summit and extending down to Kurohime. The West facing slopes (ie looking towards the base) are gradually getting the sun, however, there are darker clouds in the opposite direction in the other side. As it should start to snow lightly later on, these could be drifting over. We had a light dusting last night which is extremely light like talc which can be blown away by mouth. Not enough for anything exciting but still nice under foot. A bit more tonight but nothing significant. The roadside snow walls are all softened out and kind of slushy looking (technical term). There was a minuscule dusting of new snow this morning; I heard it melting and dripping off the roof and feared for a moment that it might be rain, but luckily it wasn't. It's just kind of gray and quiet right now; it feels like something should be happening, but not sure what that will be.
