I had a bit of powder fever this morning, meaning the snow clearing got done, and then again, and then work came in and I stared out the window at the excellent snow coming down and thought that I should get out there... and neglected my reporting duties. But can you blame me, after a morning of rain and pretty wet snow all afternoon yesterday. Excellent snow out there today. Enough volume to be a little careful going off-piste, especially with that warm weather and rain yesterday and sun earlier. There was some wind overnight as well (lots of snow dunes around the house this morning) so it's a good idea to be thoughtful in backcountry endeavors. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's another of those mornings where it's quite bright with some blue sky in places, and light snow lazily falling in others (Village). Even over there in Village, though, it is quite bright and some blue sky opening up too. It always looks so pretty when it snows and the sun is shining too. A fine early morning, I would say, and for the moment it feels like there is going to be increasingly blue sky. There has been just a little snowfall since yesterday though I see that Hirafu and Hanazono are both reporting 10cm. Hopefully we will be getting larger amounts tomorrow and the day after. It should be a bit colder too. All of the ski areas are opening as normal this morning. Anyway, that's all I have. Coastal data: Benkei Cape SW2.0m/s, Kamui Cape E3m/s, 1017hPa, 1.0m waves. An inflow of cold air has caused radiative cooling overnight and a thin surface frost has formed on the surface. This combined with the low pressure snowfall on the 11th is expected to become a weak layer in the future snowpack. From observation, tests and data the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Below 800m the mountain is still tracked out from yesterday, but above 800m, yesterday afternoon's snowfall and a bit of wind has reset the surface in places. However, watch out for hard tracks under the fresh snow. Conditions on the groomers are good. Never duck ropes to enter strictly off limits areas. Visibility is good today, so you will be easy to spot. In Niseko there are “Niseko Rules” and it is strictly forbidden to duck ropes. The days are getting longer and it feels like spring. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It feels a bit milder this morning (the ski areas are only reporting around -7C up top and it's about -2cm here at base. I am happy to be able to report fresh snow too. I have just measured 12cm. And it is snowing at the moment too, with more on the way over the coming days, along with colder temperatures. There, that feels more like normal. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -1C, 15cm new snow, low pressure snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -4.2C, S2.8m/s, 15cm new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -6.6C, WSW5.7m/s. Mizuno no Sawa top: -5.5C, WSW5.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -6.4C, WSW8.3m/s, 10cm new snow. Hanazono#3: -4.6C, SSW3.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape light wind, Kamui Cape WNW10m/s, 1019hPa, 1.0m waves. 10-15cm of low pressure snow falling overnight with the passing of a low pressure system. There has been only minor snowdrift and cornice development and tests showed no breakage. The general avalanche risk below 1000m is low and peak gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrols advice. Because the isobars are spaced widely and there is little wind the groomers are in good condition and a relaxing ride. Beware that below 800m cracks are hidden by the new snow. Cracks form as tension in the slope is released, at the moment there is little chance of an avalanche. However the cracks are deep and cannot be seen from above. Beware on steep slopes towards the valleys, sometimes you can lose visibility. A W wind is expected to intensify, watch for a weather change. There is no safety in this sport. Only caution prevents accidents. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Those who persevered through the snow (and in some areas wind) yesterday are rewarded by a very good covering last night. Hopefully this has now done away with the crunchy areas! There are bright spots appearing through the clouds and we should be in for the sunny day forecasted. Tomorrow is also forecasted to be a sunny day. This does mean though that there will be queues at the bottom of the Zao Ropeway so try to get on at the second stage.
