The latest Niseko Now report can be found here My mind just wouldn't settle down last night and the noisy winds outside didn't help me get a good nights sleep. (Nothing some good toast won't fix). It is another cold morning, currently -9C, and I have another 10cm of snow to report. Niseko Village are reporting a temp of -16C up top (and 5cm of fresh snow). Hanazono are reporting up to 20cm snowfall this morning. Wind doesn't seem to be a particular nuisance at the moment so ski areas and gates should be opening as planned. Tomorrow and Saturday probably will be milder, hopefully not by too much. But, without wanting to sound boring, the snow clouds probably won't ever be far away. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -8C, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -11.2℃, 15cm new snow, small snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -13.9C, WNW6.8m/s, small snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -11.2C, NNW2.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -13.8C, NNE1.1m/s, average 10cm light crystal snow. Hanazono#3: -10.6C, N5.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW13m/s, Kamui Cape WSW8m/s, 1025hPa, 1.4m waves. Mountains are calm under the weak wintery pressure distribution. Slops are reset with light crystal snow. From the observation, test, and weather data, general avalanche risk is low. Wind crusts have developed on the HigashiOne and Kozan no Sawa sidewall due to the NE wind from the day before, beware of shallow surface avalanches on the slopes over 40 degrees, expect to slide a long way at high speed which can be triggered by falling or rider stimulation. New snow is thin and you will still hit the bottom, but some pockets of good snow can be found in the trees. Do not stimulate the knolls and steep open slopes. Remember there are people riding underneath you. Do not stay in the gullies. Avalanche risk always exists but most of the accidents can be prevented if we are careful. All the peak gates will be open. Always use gates to go outbounds. Beware of sudden weather change. Have you switched your beacon on? We had some roads below Akakan close yesterday because of deep snow and people trying to make the ascent to the resort in non-4WD vehicles. There is a point where no amount of chains or other supplements will make up for the lack of all-wheel power.... Really white trees and mountains and blue skies. No sign of that just yet and some early morning limited visibility on the top of the mountain. The ski area has reported over 50cm snowfall since yesterday and there has been a lot down to base too. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A bit hard to read how today will turn out. It just stopped snowing, however, it is supposed to be due back during the day. It is also supposed to be overcast, however, there are blue patches appearing and then disappearing around the base and beyond. Although there is fog higher up, this, at the moment, is only affecting long range visibility. Wind is likely to pick up later. So, there you have it - a bit of everything! Just get out and enjoy the new covering as there won't be any more until Sunday morning when quite a bit is expected. The entry to my house was filled with snow that blew through a tiny crack; the cars each had a big wave of snow off to the lee side.... It should be great on the slopes today (if you like deep, light snow); the backcountry might be, well, not so safe after all that wind. Expect at least a lot of sluffing on steep slopes, something that could take you into some bad terrain (think deep valleys) if you're not careful. Give it some time; let the snow settle! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Phew. I have been out moving snow early this morning. Good exercise. Yes, we have a lot of fresh snowfall. Nozawa-like, might I add. The ski area reported snowfall numbers this morning range from 30-65cm. That doesn't include snow that we got during the day yesterday (I was confused by the ski area reporting yesterday, so will leave that out). There's a lot of fresh out there today and we can expect 'more than' the numbers below. As you can see from the Hikage image below (featuring Naski), we are currently having a bit of a break from snow and there is even a bit of sunshine. That isn't due to last as we will probably have snow showers through the day. Tomorrow and Friday there is a good chance of snow. I expect the next few days should be pretty great out there. Yey! Hakuba Cortina this morning are boasting of 23cm of snowfall at base areas overnight, which is more than others can claim. (They are also reporting windy conditions and limited visibility). Some light snow falling yesterday and outside of Cortina ski areas (that report numbers) are reporting 5-10cm in upper areas. It's a cold morning, so I would expect the snow should be good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just a short while ago it was snowing heavily outside my place, though that has eased off considerably now. Webcams are all showing snow falling around the mountain and variable visibility this morning, and even a hint of sun again in places. I'd say generally we have variable weather conditions again this morning. Even if we get clearer skies at times, snow showers probably won't be far away over the coming days. (And at the same time really heavy snow not expected). Oh yes... another 10cm of snowfall since yesterday. It is a cold morning and right now my thermometer outside reads -9C. (As I am about to post this report, I have got some sun shining through my window again). --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -10C, light wind, major snowdrift development, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -13.2C, NW7.4m/s, major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -16.3C, NNW6.6m/s, light wind, major snow drift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -14.9C, NNE10.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -16.1C, NNE10.7m/s. Hanazono#3: -13.4C, NNE4.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NE7m/s, Kamui Cape E3m/s, 1019hPa, 1.9m waves. A strong NE wind and snow yesterday afternoon and into the night caused heavy snowdrift development at all elevations. Above 700m the slopes are heavily affected by the wind with slopes re-shaped and inter mixed wind crust and snowdrifts. The snow drifted into the valleys is heavy and likely to catch an edge. From observation and tests the avalanche risk above 1000m is high. Gates 2 and 3 will be closed, other gates yet to be decided. Do not duck ropes to go out of bounds.
