It is snowing very lightly, the snow is expected to ease mid morning leaving cloudy conditions. At the moment the lower half of the mountain is clear, and the upper half has low cloud sitting on it. No wind is present at base. Today's new snow number of 25cm is for today (16cm) and yesterday which wasn't reported (9cm). The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Fortunately, the rain yesterday was followed by snow so at least a covering (slightly more higher up). Lovely and soft if you're going straight but ice underneath as soon as you turn. Concentration is required today to not catch an edge. It should snow throughout today with a more meaningful amount overnight. There is wind about and the ropeway to the top is not running yet because if this. The wind should lessen during the day. It is, however, not that bad elsewhere. It is foggy from mid-levels up but you can see in front of you in most places. Anywhere you go will be icy so really a choice between total viz versus a bit murky and wind. Give the Hyakumannin slope a miss over at Kurohime however, as, due to wind, it is mostly ice and I think I need a re-wax! The extra layer overnight combined with the piste-bashers will hopefully improve conditions tomorrow. Ona final note, the trees are back to being frosty and the snowy trees higher up have been fairly resilient albeit not looking like the poster snow monsters which disappeared quite some time ago now. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . One nasty day of rain, and now we're back to the white stuff. It's snowing pretty hard, with some wind behind it as well. It's hard to see out there, but that's always better than the wetter form of water. I wanted to write about what I saw two nights ago, which looked like police emergency lights way up on the mountain. It in fact turned out to be a helicopter trying to do a rescue right on the edge of its operational hours. Sure enough, it flew off to the north and Niigata City just as it really got close to darkness. Apparently another skier got stuck in the valley just above and slightly to the south of Akakan - and this certainly wasn't the first time someone got lost/stuck/made a bad decision (and it was a guided tour, too). There's a reason it's called Takizawa - waterfall valley - as there are a series of rocky drops in there. But it's not just here; the terrain in Myoko is lots of valleys and ridges that head off in unpredictable ways. Why people would be in a valley in the first place is hard to understand, a tiny sluff could quickly become a big problem in you're at the bottom of a valley. Yet we see tracks going into the worst possible places. Real backcountry skiing is a lot of fun, the risks can be controlled, but you can't just take off and expect to get safely off the mountain. A lot of people need less fancy gear and more knowledge (their own, and local experience). Well, they need the good gear, too, but there are a lot of people out there now with thousands of dollars in gear and just a few cents' worth of sense. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another 10-15cm of snow since yesterday and as the ski areas open for the morning we have generally cloudy skies but with a hint of the sun trying to break through. As I feel I have said quite a lot recently, the snow clouds will probably not be far away. We are also host to some pesky wind on the mountains this morning. As of 8:30am, all of the top lifts are on hold, as are the gondola lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri. That shiny new(er) gondola at Hanazono says boo to the wind and is open (though perhaps at a slower speed). ----- Following a comment I made last week about our fab snowfall consistency, a few people have asked if I have ever been skiing or snowboarding in other regions of Japan. Unfortunately, the answer is that while I have a fair bit of experience around Hokkaido over the years, I have only limited skiing experience in Honshu. And it was many years ago. But I would love to experience all the places I have heard about for so many years. SnowJapan makes it quite clear that they recommend not directly comparing the reports on the site. That is one reason why the (new site) system is not set up as some sort of 'competition' and each section is self contained. If you want to compare, the data is all there - in abundance and easily accessibly. I totally agree with that stance - it's not a competition. So many factors make up the ski experience, and snowfall is just one of those (though, of course, a very important one!) Some places get more snow than others. Some get less snow down to base. More snow doesn't necessarily mean better snow. Some regions have much steeper terrain than others. Etc, etc. And people like different stuff. I would like to spend some time in places like Hakuba, Myoko and Shiga Kogen, amongst others. There are just so many. I have heard lots of good things about those places, and it sounds like they offer a somewhat different experience to what I am used to here in Niseko. And that sounds good to me. Unfortunately, I'm pretty busy every morning throughout the winter doing something that requires me to be here in Niseko. And that makes a long winter trip to Honshu rather tricky. Maybe one day! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5C, 15cm wind affected snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -8.0C, 20cm snowfall with snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -10.9C, WNW9.5m/s, stormy, bad visibility and snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -9.4℃, NNW6.8C. Hirafu Hanazono: -10.8C, NNW3.8ms/, snowdrift development. Hanazono#3: -7.8C, NNW6.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape N20m/s, Kamui cape NNE14m/s, 1003hPa, 3.1m waves. The wind picked up during the night and the new snowdrifts in leeward slopes above 800m elevation are likely to slide from yesterday’s (Feb 19th) low-pressure snowfall layer. The wind died down before dawn, however picked up again around 7am making snowdrifts and cornices develop further. The avalanche risk is high in open steep slopes above the treeline and 800m elevation. Gates #2, 3 & 4 will be shut for the sake of all resort users. Other gates opening is not determined at this stage, please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. Do not cross boundary ropes. Many of the avalanche accidents are triggered by people skiing unstable slabs of snow. The reason why most accidents in Niseko occur during storms is because people ski wind-affected snow slabs during their unstable, structurally weak, development stage, and not necessarily because of prominent weak layer slides that are mostly seen under sunny weather. Pay attention to how the snow has been accumulating in the past. Most of the avalanches during winter occur in leeward slopes with heavy loads of snowdrift under high wind weather. This information is based on objective and mechanical facts and is issued for minimizing accidents in and around the Niseko area. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have another 7cm of snow to report to you this morning after a day of cloud, light snow and some blue sky too. I also have some blue skies and sunshine to report early this morning. I haven't been able to do much of that this season so far. Relatively mild temps too - right now around Hirafu base it is slightly under 0C and the sun might push that a few more above zero during the day. Temps should be dropping again from later tomorrow. Cold air is still around above 1000m causing thick fog where it hits the lower level warm air. Visibility is good below 800m though. From observations and data the snow has stabilised and the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Also from observations and snowfall data expect Feb 18 layer to be significant in the future snowpack. There are many dangers in the mountains in winter, but if you are careful accidents can be avoided. Avalanches are a natural occurrence and only become accidents when people are involved. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It feels milder this morning, though it is still -3C. I have measured another 9cm of snowfall since yesterday morning and, guess what, it is snowing. Lightly for the moment. Hirafu and Hanazono are both reporting up to 20cm on the mountain. I was just looking at our snowfall numbers for the season, as well as those for other regions of Japan (on the other Now reports). The one thing that stood out to me is just how consistent the snowfall here in Niseko is. Just look at the graph lower down this page! I have said it before, but while we might not get the sometimes-bonkers massive snowfall numbers that some regions get on some days, we get that real consistency. I would like to experience the madness one day, but I think I'll take the consistency. Especially with the quality of snow that we usually get here. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -5C, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -5.7C, WSW2.8m/s, 10cm new snow, calm. Annupuri 1100m: -8.2C, W7.4m/s, 15cm new snow, strong winds, snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -7.1C, WNW5.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -8.3C, SE0.8m/s, 10cm new snow. Hanazono#3: -4.9C, ENE2.8m/s, 10cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW10m/s, Kamui Cape: WSW11m/s, 1021hPa, 1.2m waves. Although the isobars are widely spaced, there is strong winds at sea and above 1100m. About 15cm of light snow has accumulated in the trees, not enough for a full reset though. From the morning's observation and data, the general avalanche is low. Peak gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare before going out of bounds. The winter mountains are always dangerous, when outside the ski area always consider your decisions carefully. To avoid avalanches, cross open steep slopes and valleys one at a time, dont traverse steep cornice slopes and don't stop or wait in gullies. You can expect poor visibility at times so always know your location. Ride carefully because cracks and holes are opening up and are hard to see from above. Accidents can be prevented with care.
