  • Yuzawa Now: Friday 7th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 29cm Snowfall at base this season 227cm Posted on Friday 7th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow continued falling into the evening yesterday, longer than we were perhaps expecting according to the forecasts. Not complaining! By 4pm I had wiped 15cm off the measuring point and this morning there's an additional 14cm on there. So that's a total of 29cm since my report yesterday morning. It was coming down very nicely. It was cold. Large icicles forming. Trees laden with snow. Brilliant. And this morning the sun is out and we are treated to blue skies and sunshine. It is a beautiful morning. Nice and cold. I am in awe! Kagura eventually reported over 50cm yesterday and this morning they are reporting another 15cm. Maiko are only reporting 10cm of snow, but that is from 'last night'. (I often wonder why some ski resorts seemingly just ignore snow that falls in a daytime and only report 'overnight'...) With snow now piled up on the side of the roads, at last it now looks and feels like mid-winter. Conditions this morning should be excellent. The individual ski resort information below has all been checked and updated. More lifts and courses are opening up now and probably more still for the weekend. Places need a bit of time to get things prepared ready - including calling on lift staff who will be very happy to get those calls. Might I soon be able to just say 'all open'? Hope so. OK, so we have sun today but more snow is due over the weekend and we might get another decent amount too. Another few days of good snow would really get things running smoothly. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 9th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 43cm Snowfall at base this season 276cm Posted on Sunday 9th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And it's another good one! Yesterday evening I cleared 8cm of snow from 'the point' and this morning there is another 35cm on there... making the total since the report yesterday as 43cm. Nice. Remember, this is down at town level and it's good to see snow walls now a feature along the side of Route 17. Kagura are reporting 60cm of fresh snow. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 40cm. Very nice. So we can expect a good 40+cm of snow across the mountains this morning. (Compacted if groomed of course). Snow is forecast for the day but it is just light snow at the moment and there are even some signs of possible clearer conditions... --- This first part of February - and especially the last three days - really has transformed things. And as you can see below, most resorts are close closing in on 'fully open' status. I might even just take that text off the report to celebrate. Things really can change very quickly! Like I mentioned yesterday, there's some rather warmer conditions coming from the middle of the coming week - recommend you plan accordingly if you have a choice. Conditions should be best over the next few days. Hopefully we'll see things getting colder beyond that upcoming warmer spell. --- The Kagura to Tashiro connecting course is not open this morning due to avalanche risk and it looks like the top Number 5 lift at Kagura is closed too. Plenty of fresh powder to enjoy up there though. --- GALA Yuzawa - All courses (apart from $2,600,000) are now open, including the downhill Falcon course - All lifts operating - The Ropeway connecting GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is operating - Official snow depth: 210cm Ishiuchi Maruyama - All courses and lifts are open - Official snow depth: 230cm (upper); 150cm (mid) Iwappara - All courses and lifts are open - Official snow depth: 120cm Joetsu Kokusai - All areas are now open - Official snow depth: 150cm Kagura - All areas of Kagura are normally open - 19 of 23 courses open - The Dragondola connecting with Naeba is operating - Official snow depth: 250cm Kandatsu Snow Resort - All courses and lifts are open - Official snow depth: 175cm Maiko Snow Resort - All areas are now open - Official snow depth: 190cm (upper); 90cm (base) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - All lifts are operating - 13 of 14 courses open - Official snow depth: 220cm Naeba - 21 of 22 courses open - Official snow depth: 100cm - Details on Naeba Now report here NASPA Ski Garden - All courses and lifts are open - Official snow depth: 160cm Yuzawa Kogen - All courses and lifts are open - The Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is operating - Official snow depth: 150cm (Kogen); 50cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato - All courses and lifts are open - Official snow depth: 120cm Yuzawa Park - All courses and lifts are open - Official snow depth: 130cm Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Sunday 9th February 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 276cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 25 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 48cm (6th February) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 88cm reported on 10 days February 2020 snowfall 149cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 10th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 291cm Posted on Monday 10th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing on and off through the day yesterday; a few periods of clearer weather and even sunshine in places. It was still snowing later in the evening when I went out to shovel some snow**. The popular ski resorts were very busy too - there were a lot of people out enjoying the fresh snow. I have observed another 16cm of snowfall to report since my report yesterday morning. This morning both Kagura and Maiko - the resorts that report such numbers - are both reporting 10cm. That seem quite low considering what I have observed, but it is what it is! (Maiko always flag their number as 'snowfall since last night', so perhaps that explains it). There has been a lot of cloud around this morning but increasingly blue sky too over the last hour or so and it is bright and some sunshine too. It's a chilly start to the morning with temperatures due to rise to the other side of zero, and we have more snowfall due from afternoon through into tomorrow morning so hopefully I'll be bringing further snowfall numbers in my next report. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan (National Foundation Day) so it will be busier than usual for a Tuesday. Indeed, today may be busier than usual for a Monday with some people taking the day off. If you did that --- very good timing, I say!! Beyond tomorrow, we are still forecast some milder/warmer conditions in the second part of the week. (** After the lack of shovelling work required through December and January, you won't find me moaning about shovelling snow any time in the near future. I love it. The more shovelling the better...) --- GALA Yuzawa - All courses (apart from $2,600,000 and Bronco) are now open, including the downhill Falcon course - All lifts operating - The Ropeway connecting GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is operating - Official snow depth: 250cm Ishiuchi Maruyama - All courses and lifts are open - Official snow depth: 250cm (upper); 160cm (mid) Iwappara - All courses and lifts (apart from Number 1 pair) are open - Official snow depth: 120cm Joetsu Kokusai - All areas are now open - Official snow depth: 160cm Kagura - All areas of Kagura are normally open - 20 of 23 courses open - The Dragondola connecting with Naeba is operating - Official snow depth: 270cm Kandatsu Snow Resort - All scheduled courses and lifts are open (D lift and associated courses closed on weekdays) - Official snow depth: 180cm Maiko Snow Resort - All areas are now open - Official snow depth: 190cm (upper); 90cm (base) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Ropeway, Number 1 and 3 lifts are operating - 12 of 14 courses open - Official snow depth: 220cm Naeba - 21 of 22 courses open - Official snow depth: 110cm - Details on Naeba Now report here NASPA Ski Garden - All main courses and lifts are open - Official snow depth: 160cm Yuzawa Kogen - All courses and lifts are open - The Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is operating - Official snow depth: 150cm (Kogen); 50cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato - Number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 lifts are operating - Official snow depth: 125cm Yuzawa Park - Number 1, 7 and 8 lifts are operating; most courses open - Official snow depth: 130cm Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Monday 10th February 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 291cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 26 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 48cm (6th February) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 88cm reported on 10 days February 2020 snowfall 164cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There's more snow to report this morning after it started in the afternoon yesterday. The Kagura resort are this morning reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall and I am hearing similar from over at Naeba too. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm. Other resorts are reporting... actually, we wish they did! On our trusted measuring spot and nearby I can report around 20cm. It is snowing still as this report is about to be posted, but due to ease off later on by this afternoon. It might well be another busy day today -- today is National Foundation Day and a holiday in Japan. We are still forecast warmer conditions tomorrow through Friday (with some rain in the mix too unfortunately), but the good news on that front is that there seems to be a return to colder conditions and more snow lined up next week. --- The Number 5 top lift at Kagura is closed today due to avalanche risk. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 15th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 311cm Posted on Saturday 15th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. There has been a few spots of rain early morning but we are due a day of cloudy skies and temperatures just a little lower than yesterday - still mild. (I so don't want to say this, but) tomorrow is going to be warmer still - rising to perhaps a few above 10C. We are still scheduled to enjoy a return to colder conditions during Monday and in particular Tuesday when we can hope to get a fresh layer of snow. In the meantime it's probably going to be a spring-like feel for the weekend - both in temperatures and snow conditions. At times like this in particular you'll get better snow the higher you go. --- The Tokamachi Snow Festival is taking place today and tomorrow. It is the largest snow festival in the region and has been taking place since 1950. Unfortunately, unusually low levels of snow has been causing big problems this season. Organisers have been trucking in snow from nearby mountains and changing plans to cope with the situation - they were determined not to cancel. The snow sculptures that appear around town are usually really impressive - those guys really do a great job. There aren't going to be as many sculptures this year and some events have been scaled down, but I'm sure it will still be fun. I am feeling the need to get over there and show my support. Tokamachi is about 45 minutes from Yuzawa by car and you can also get a train (Hokuhoku line) from Echigo Yuzawa Station. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 18th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 330cm Posted on Tuesday 18th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And good news this morning. After some wet conditions later on in the day, it was snowing by evening and overnight we have a fresh layer on the ground. 19cm measured here (and just as an extra note, 24cm just to the north of Ishiuchi Maruyama). Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30cm of snowfall on their upper area. Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 20cm. And the Kagura resort is reporting 15cm as of 7:30am. So it sounds like there should be a decent amount across the mountains this morning. A very welcome refresh. It is still snowing too, though only lightly at the moment. We can expect more cm to build up during the day with it forecast for the day and tonight. Great to feel the colder temperatures as well after that period of warmer conditions. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 19th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 345cm Posted on Wednesday 19th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday was one of those pleasing winter days with quite cold conditions, snow falling for most of the day - and quite heavily at times. I have an additional 15cm to add this morning. I wasn't even annoyed when I got woken up by the sound of snow clearing machines in the middle of the night. This morning Maiko Snow Resort and Yuzawa Kogen are both reporting 20cm of fresh snow; interestingly Kagura reporting only 5-10cm. It sounds like the southern area of Yuzawa (Kagura and Naeba) didn't get as much as the town area and Minamiuonuma just to the north. That sometimes happens. So we have had a very welcome refresh and fresh snow conditions to enjoy this morning. Hopefully enough to cover patchy lower areas and certainly a big improvement. It should be a good day. Ishiuchi Maruyama are back to being almost all open and the base 'play in the snow' area at Yuzawa Kogen is open again. It is still cloudy with light snow lingering in some places, visibility looks generally good and there might even get to be some sunshine later on in the day. The next delivery of fresh snow is due around Sunday. (Can we just keep the temperatures quite cold and not have any rain over the coming days this time, please?!!) --- Yesterday I was looking at the report data from this season and noticed something interesting. Including the snowfall number from today, the total observed snowfall for the month of February 2020 so far is 218cm. That is actually more than was observed for the whole month of February 2019, February 2018, February 2016 and February 2014. The most that we have observed in these Yuzawa Now reports in the month of February was in 2017 (267cm). So we are actually doing pretty good for February. The big difference this season, of course, is the lack of big snowfalls in the early season and very low snowfall numbers for December and January. I clearly remember December 2014 and January 2015. That period was totally awesome. Lots of shovelling. People were complaining about there being too much snow. (I didn't. That's just silly). That season truly got off to an incredible start... You can see all of these numbers in the data table towards the bottom of this report. You can also see that data and more on the 'Snowfall Analysis' page (link at the top of this report). The graphs on the page may appear a bit 'busy' initially, but that's only because of the depth of the data we have collated through the years! You can easily toggle the data on/off; compare different seasons against each other; and generally get lost in numbers. If you haven't already checked that out I highly recommend you taking a look. Seeing the data on the graphs really shows it in a different light... (Just one onegai - we always welcome links in to our website and there's no need to ask. But if you decide to take a screenshot of our work to share with someone, please do credit us for it. Thank you). --- GALA Yuzawa - All lifts are operating - All courses in Central and Northern Area are open - In the Southern Area, the Batman and Eliza courses are open - The Ropeway connecting GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is operating - Official snow depth: 180cm Ishiuchi Maruyama - Most courses open today - Official snow depth: 160cm (upper); 110cm (mid) Iwappara - All lifts (apart from Number 1 pair) and most of mid to upper area open - Official snow depth: 120cm Joetsu Kokusai - All areas are now open, some courses unavailable - Official snow depth: 160cm Kagura - All areas of Kagura are open - The downhill course will not be open this season (autumn typhoon damage) - The Dragondola connecting with Naeba is operating - Official snow depth: 250cm Kandatsu Snow Resort - A, B and C lifts are operating; most courses open - Official snow depth: 145cm Maiko Snow Resort - All the main areas are now open; some course restrictions - Official snow depth: 160cm (upper); 55cm (base) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 11 of 14 courses open; 3 of 4 lifts operating - Official snow depth: 180cm Naeba - 19 of 22 courses open - Some course restrictions due to upcoming event - Official snow depth: 90cm - Details on Naeba Now report here NASPA Ski Garden - All main courses apart from D are open; all lifts operating - Official snow depth: 100cm Yuzawa Kogen - The top area via Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway is fully open - The base areas are open - The Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is operating - Official snow depth: 150cm (Kogen); 30cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato - Number 1, 2, 3 and 5 lifts are operating - Official snow depth: 90cm Yuzawa Park - All lifts are operating - Official snow depth: 100cm Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Wednesday 19th February 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 345cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 29 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 48cm (6th February) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 88cm reported on 10 days February 2020 snowfall 218cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 24th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 346cm Posted on Monday 24th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We're really not catching many breaks with the weather this season, are we. So yesterday it was kind-of snowing in Yuzawa and kind-of raining just to the north in Minamiuonuma. It certainly wasn't the day of nice snow that we thought we might have had... well, not in town anyway. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall and Kagura are reporting 5-10cm, so it sounds like upper mountain areas got a layer of fresh. (I am recording 1cm this morning from the dusting+ we got down in town). Things look brighter - and are calmer - this morning. The sun is out and there is lots of blue sky over Yuzawa, lots more cloud to the north. There is some more fresh snow on the forecast for this week. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I am happy to report fresh snowfall again this morning with a nice new layer of fresh snow on the ground. It was snowing for lots of yesterday but it didn't really add any cm, but it got heavier from the evening and overnight I have an additional 15cm to report. Kagura are reporting 20-30cm. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm. Ishiuchi are back to being 'all open'. This is all good to hear; and another relief for lower areas in particular. It is still snowing lightly now but due to ease off this morning. Sunshine is forecast for tomorrow and so it should be a good weekend for the resorts. --- With the headline news about the coronavirus situation and related hotel and travel cancellations, ski resorts might not be as busy as usual this weekend. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 6th March 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 387cm Posted on Friday 6th March 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is really good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Took a while to get going yesterday, and perhaps not as much as we were told to expect and hoping for, but all snow is precious. Kagura are reporting... actually, they're not reporting any snowfall number at the time of me putting this report together. But they are saying that the Tashiro Area is closed due to wind. But Maiko Snow Resort seem to be reporting 40cm from their upper slopes! That seems a lot. I can report 12cm on the ground. If there is as much as 40cm higher up, perhaps it's one of those cases where it has actually snowed quite a lot more at higher elevations than down at base. (That often happens in early and late seasons). There is a lot of cloud around and light snow is still falling in places but the sun is managing to come out in places as well. Tomorrow we are expecting sunshine so it should be a fine day to be out on the mountains. --- The Iwappara resort have announced that they will be open until Sunday (8th March). They originally planned to be open until 29th March, so that's 3 weeks earlier than planned. I expect a good chance of similar news in the coming days from other lower areas... important to note that higher areas still have good snow cover. --- Today was to be the main Yuzawa Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival). It has been largely downsized but it appears that there will be fireworks at 8:50pm and perhaps a few smaller things going on by the base of the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway from 7pm, though curiously it is rather difficult to find detailed information. Something called 'Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Fuyu (Winter) Illumination 6 Week' is ongoing from 4pm-9pm, with some lighting along the road between the station and Yuzawa Kogen.
