The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And good news this morning. After some wet conditions later on in the day, it was snowing by evening and overnight we have a fresh layer on the ground. 19cm measured here (and just as an extra note, 24cm just to the north of Ishiuchi Maruyama). Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30cm of snowfall on their upper area. Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 20cm. And the Kagura resort is reporting 15cm as of 7:30am. So it sounds like there should be a decent amount across the mountains this morning. A very welcome refresh. It is still snowing too, though only lightly at the moment. We can expect more cm to build up during the day with it forecast for the day and tonight. Great to feel the colder temperatures as well after that period of warmer conditions. It's not crazy cold, more like just under zero for the moment, but Kagura are reporting a temperature of -10C on the mountain. The snow doesn't look likely to continue beyond early tomorrow morning so we want to get as much as possible today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday was one of those pleasing winter days with quite cold conditions, snow falling for most of the day - and quite heavily at times. I have an additional 15cm to add this morning. I wasn't even annoyed when I got woken up by the sound of snow clearing machines in the middle of the night. This morning Maiko Snow Resort and Yuzawa Kogen are both reporting 20cm of fresh snow; interestingly Kagura reporting only 5-10cm. It sounds like the southern area of Yuzawa (Kagura and Naeba) didn't get as much as the town area and Minamiuonuma just to the north. That sometimes happens. So we have had a very welcome refresh and fresh snow conditions to enjoy this morning. Hopefully enough to cover patchy lower areas and certainly a big improvement. It should be a good day. Ishiuchi Maruyama are back to being almost all open and the base 'play in the snow' area at Yuzawa Kogen is open again. It is still cloudy with light snow lingering in some places, visibility looks generally good and there might even get to be some sunshine later on in the day. The next delivery of fresh snow is due around Sunday. (Can we just keep the temperatures quite cold and not have any rain over the coming days this time, please?!!) --- Yesterday I was looking at the report data from this season and noticed something interesting. Including the snowfall number from today, the total observed snowfall for the month of February 2020 so far is 218cm. That is actually more than was observed for the whole month of February 2019, February 2018, February 2016 and February 2014. The most that we have observed in these Yuzawa Now reports in the month of February was in 2017 (267cm). So we are actually doing pretty good for February. The big difference this season, of course, is the lack of big snowfalls in the early season and very low snowfall numbers for December and January. I clearly remember December 2014 and January 2015. That period was totally awesome. Lots of shovelling. People were complaining about there being too much snow. (I didn't. That's just silly). That season truly got off to an incredible start... You can see all of these numbers in the data table towards the bottom of this report. You can also see that data and more on the 'Snowfall Analysis' page (link at the top of this report). The graphs on the page may appear a bit 'busy' initially, but that's only because of the depth of the data we have collated through the years! You can easily toggle the data on/off; compare different seasons against each other; and generally get lost in numbers. If you haven't already checked that out I highly recommend you taking a look. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We're really not catching many breaks with the weather this season, are we. So yesterday it was kind-of snowing in Yuzawa and kind-of raining just to the north in Minamiuonuma. It certainly wasn't the day of nice snow that we thought we might have had... well, not in town anyway. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall and Kagura are reporting 5-10cm, so it sounds like upper mountain areas got a layer of fresh. (I am recording 1cm this morning from the dusting+ we got down in town). Things look brighter - and are calmer - this morning. The sun is out and there is lots of blue sky over Yuzawa, lots more cloud to the north. There is some more fresh snow on the forecast for this week. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I am happy to report fresh snowfall again this morning with a nice new layer of fresh snow on the ground. It was snowing for lots of yesterday but it didn't really add any cm, but it got heavier from the evening and overnight I have an additional 15cm to report. Kagura are reporting 20-30cm. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm. Ishiuchi are back to being 'all open'. This is all good to hear; and another relief for lower areas in particular. It is still snowing lightly now but due to ease off this morning. Sunshine is forecast for tomorrow and so it should be a good weekend for the resorts. --- With the headline news about the coronavirus situation and related hotel and travel cancellations, ski resorts might not be as busy as usual this weekend. It is difficult to read. For the record, I believe there have been no cases yet reported in Niigata Prefecture. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is really good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Took a while to get going yesterday, and perhaps not as much as we were told to expect and hoping for, but all snow is precious. Kagura are reporting... actually, they're not reporting any snowfall number at the time of me putting this report together. But they are saying that the Tashiro Area is closed due to wind. But Maiko Snow Resort seem to be reporting 40cm from their upper slopes! That seems a lot. I can report 12cm on the ground. If there is as much as 40cm higher up, perhaps it's one of those cases where it has actually snowed quite a lot more at higher elevations than down at base. (That often happens in early and late seasons). There is a lot of cloud around and light snow is still falling in places but the sun is managing to come out in places as well. Tomorrow we are expecting sunshine so it should be a fine day to be out on the mountains. --- The Iwappara resort have announced that they will be open until Sunday (8th March). They originally planned to be open until 29th March, so that's 3 weeks earlier than planned. I expect a good chance of similar news in the coming days from other lower areas... important to note that higher areas still have good snow cover. --- Today was to be the main Yuzawa Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival). It has been largely downsized but it appears that there will be fireworks at 8:50pm and perhaps a few smaller things going on by the base of the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway from 7pm, though curiously it is rather difficult to find detailed information. Something called 'Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Fuyu (Winter) Illumination 6 Week' is ongoing from 4pm-9pm, with some lighting along the road between the station and Yuzawa Kogen. I wasn't out myself yesterday but my good friend spent a few hours over at Maiko Snow Resort and they said that it was actually rather busy. Interesting. It was a lovely day. Spring-like, for sure. Accept that and there's still lots of fun to be had. In contrast with yesterday this morning it is grey and overcast. It is a mild start to the day. Today is the last day of the season for the Iwappara resort. Otsukaresama deshita. --- We might see temperatures rising to around 16C in town tomorrow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There's some snow to see this morning! Kagura are reporting 5cm and so are Maiko Snow Resort. Lower down here in town areas there has been 1-2cm, with just a dusting on the top of my car. Lots of cloud around this morning but some sunshine breaking through and it feels like it might well clear up and be a fine day. There's more sun on the forecast for tomorrow too and that snow over the weekend is still there on the forecasts. --- The Yuzawa Park resort is closed from today - yesterday ended up being their last day of the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Some snow falling on the mountains yesterday, thought it was more... wet... down below. This morning both Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm of fresh snow. Kandatsu have increased their official snow depth by... 20cm. (I don't know the story behind that but with Kagura and Maiko both reporting 5cm, 20cm of fresh snowfall in a location that is basically in between those two resorts and close to town does seem... kind of unlikely). But anyway, you can get an idea of the dustings and layer of snow on the images below. And fresh snowfall is always very welcome. Lots of cloud still now but we might get some sunshine today before the clouds move in again tonight. There is cold and snow on the forecast for tomorrow and it is once again looking quite promising. We can look forward to that. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. This morning Kagura are reporting 5cm of fresh snow and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10cm. Just a dusting really down below after some rain in the evening. What about this snow then that has been on the forecasts in varying degrees? It is still there on the forecast for around the middle of the day today. Right now there is quite a lot of blue sky around so I'm not going to try to guess what might happen. I'll let you know. From today the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is closed - other areas remain open - and less of the Naeba resort is available with just the top area of Hakkai-san now open. The clouds did move in yesterday morning and it started snowing - and actually quite heavily at times - but in the end we didn't really end up with much around town. On the mountains, Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5cm and Kagura are reporting... 30cm. Presumably that is up top, as it looks more like 5cm on the cars at base. The sun is out and it is a beautiful morning. It already feels quite mild and we expect the temperature to rise to around 10C in town today. Everywhere is looking white once again with snow down to town level - I just measured 10cm - and both Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm of snowfall on the mountain. It looks like the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed due to wind. There might be some more snow falling during the day today.
