- Madarao Now: Saturday 3rd February 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 373cm Weather overview Cloud, light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted on Saturday 3rd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. A cloudy start with light snow falling and just a slight amount of snow since yesterday. (The ski area is reporting 0cm). Might we get to see some sun this weekend? We might, if some forecasts are right (they are wrong as of 8:30am). Looking ahead a bit further, there's fresh snow on the way starting Monday, so let's hope we can get a decent amount from that. Unfortunately it looks like the Number 2 quad lift at Madarao will be closed for the day, due to some kind of mechanical issue. Hopefully they will be able to get that back up and running for tomorrow. - Niseko Now: Saturday 3rd February 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 703cm Posted on Saturday 3rd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Here we are at the first weekend in February and there's more fresh snow to report. 11cm is my measurement and both Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting up to 20cm on the mountain. We're on a roll, and hopefully it will continue for a bit longer. Nice and cold too. With less wind this morning, the top lifts are scheduled to open so it should be an excite morning all round. See below for some gate info. Roll. Mmmmmm. Time for some toast. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -9°, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -13.0°, NNE12.4m/s, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: no data. Annupuri 1100m: -15.2°, NNE4.7m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -13.6°, NNW6.9m/s, heavy snowfall, bad visibility. Hanazono 1000m: -14.8°, NNE11.5m/s, snawfall easing. Hanazono 3 : -12.2°, NNE3.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:N13m/s. Kamui Cape N9m/s, 1026hPa, wave 2.6m. The isobars are starting to open up and the snowfall is easing, but it's cold. Above 800m cornices and snowdrifts are slowly developing. From observation and data the avalanche risk is still high on Backbowl Sidewall, West ridge SW face, Annupuri Osawa 1100m cornice face and East Ridge upper cornice face. Gates 1, 2, 3 will be closed. Other gates yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. Snowdrifts are starting to stabilise, however the peak gates cannot be opened yet due to the sheer numbers of inexperienced people heading out the gates. Experienced riders please be patient. Once you go through the gates you are not in the ski area anymore, you are on your own. The snow is fantastic in the trees below 1000m. Avoid carelessly stimulating knolls above the tree line. Avoid avalanche paths by staying out of the valley bottoms. Avalanches are a natural occurrence, people being involved makes them an accident. There is no 100% safety guarantee in this sport. Always be cautious. Accidents can be avoided if you think and act accordingly. Is the beacon on? Have a nice day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Saturday 3rd February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 606cm Posted on Friday 2nd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Well, we got some snow overnight; not a huge amount, but with plenty of wind to give us a lot of drifts and blowing snow in the evening. It's pretty small, dense snow, too; no fluffy white smoke today. Some ice down there from the rain that preceded the snow, so car windows and doors were pretty well covered this morning. Lots of icicles hanging around, too. There was some talk that the No. 5 chair at Akakan, the top lift wasn't running, but it seems to be going now. Nothing much else exciting, to be honest. It's cold enough today, which is better than the usual cycle of snow and then sun/warm. Looks like it will stay colder—and could that be a few continuous days of snow from the 5th or so? Better not jinx it by saying more (yes, I am getting superstitious about this, since the snow walls are only about a meter tall, where we should be astounding the tourists with huge walls of snow everywhere). - Niseko Now: Friday 2nd February 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this season 692cm Posted on Friday 2nd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here At 8:30am I measured 13cm of fresh snow and wiped off my measuring point. There's probably going to be more there already as it has continued snowing and as I write this at 10am it is snowing quite heavily. (I'm writing this from Hanazono. It doesn't look like it is snowing as much over at Village). There's lots of those folks in bright orange wear too, so put on your sunglasses before you look at the image below! We expect snow through the day today. Alas, top lifts aren't moving at the moment due to wind. And neither is the Annupuri gondola according to the official site. Hopefully tomorrow will be calmer... In case you missed it, I posted a season review kind of thingy yesterday. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 5am: -8°, 5cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -12.7°, WNW3.4m/s, 15cm new snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: no data. Annupuri 1100m: -14.9°, WNW7.0m/s. Village 1000: -13.4°, WNW6.4m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -14.3°, NNE4.6m/s. Hanazono 3 : -11.2°, NNW0.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NNW18m/s. Kamui Cape N7m/s, 1020hPa, wave 2.1m The atmospheric pressure gradient will temporarily relax and it will be relatively calm at 800m. Expect intermittent wind and snow storms to continue into the afternoon though. Cornices and snow drifts are starting to stabilise, however on SW slopes above 1000m slabs are insufficiently compacted and there is the risk of over 50cm deep avalanches all day. Gate openings are still to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. Be careful on steep leeward slopes and knolls at all elevations where heavy amounts of wind blow snow have deposited, even below 800m. Careless stimulation could trigger an avalanche. Do not stop in the valley or gully bottoms, this is where an avalanche will run. If you are not there, there will be no avalanche accident. Conditions are similar on surrounding mountains. People have been seen brazenly ducking ropes to go out of bounds. Respect Niseko rules. Is your beacon on? The snow in the trees is wonderful. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Friday 2nd February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 387cm Posted on Thursday 1st February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. A very mild day yesterday and mild temperatures overnight. I believe it is raining down in the valleys but it is snowing lightly up here in Shiga Kogen... just a dusting on the ground in places so far. It's quite windy out there too. Temps are forecast to drop hour by hour today and hopefully they will stay lower, even if we get some sun tomorrow (as predicted on some forecasts). The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We had fabulous blue skies across the region yesterday and a very mild +4C mid-afternoon. It was as bright as... a very bright thing.
