  • Myoko Now: Tuesday 6th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 36cm Snowfall at base this season 645cm Posted on Tuesday 6th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Pretty nice fall of fresh snow yesterday and into the evening. It started just as I was finishing yesterday's report; it started slow but fell pretty steadily through the day. Not a massive addition to our snowpack, but no complaints either! We have had some more encouraging figures from the resorts (although many seem to be too busy today digging to report!), because it was getting pretty thin in some places, especially to the south and east (no, the snow does not fall evenly across the whole area). Today, as I'm writing, fog has just come in. It almost looked like it would clear a bit there around 7 am, but we're in the soup suddenly. Colder air coming in from the north? It could keep snowing, so I hope so. Akakura Kanko: 180cm, -6° (no new reports for two days now....unusual for Akakan) Akakura Onsen: 190cm, -3° (no new report) Ikenotaira Onsen Alpen Blick: 145cm, -5° (no new report) Myoko Suginohara: 130cm, -8° (no new report) Kyukamura RunRun: 140cm, -1° (no new report) Seki Onsen: 250cm, -5° Tangram Madarao Tokyu Resort: 120cm, -5° (back over one meter!) • Shiga Kogen Now: Tuesday 6th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 412cm Posted on Tuesday 6th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Snow yesterday and overnight has eased off this morning leaving us with cloudy skies and generally decent visibility. At 3:20am (!), Yakebitaiyama reported 20cm of fresh snowfall. Okushiga Kogen and Kumanoyu have also both reported 20cm this morning and my measurement is in line with those. So we should have some refreshed runs this morning. There is a chance of some more light snow through tomorrow though we shouldn't expect much, and a chance of clearer skies at the end of the week. Someone asked how can the snow depth at Ichinose Family be 120cm when it is 270cm at Takamagahara Mammoth, when they are basically next to each other. Good question and... I don't know. That Mammoth number is curious. The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. All of the ski areas in Shiga Kogen are open. Ichinose Family Official snow depth: 120cm Kumanoyu Official snow depth: 160cm Okushiga Kogen Official snow depth: 160cm Takamagahara Mammoth Official snow depth: 270cm Yakebitaiyama Official snow depth: 180cm Yokoteyama & Shibutoge Official snow depth: 160cm Shiga Kogen Now 2023-2024 season Data as of Tuesday 6th February 2024 Total snowfall at base 412cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 46 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (16th January) November 2023 snowfall 32cm reported on 8 days December 2023 snowfall 95cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 259cm reported on 21 days February 2024 snowfall 26cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Shiga Kogen. • Nozawa Now: Tuesday 6th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 38cm Snowfall at base this season 379cm Posted on Tuesday 6th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . OK, so this is good. Lots of fresh snow since yesterday. The ski area has reported up to 40cm of snow (Uenotaira) since yesterday afternoon (and there was a bit before that too, though I missed the actual numbers). Nice. And there's been a very decent amount across the mountain and in lower areas too. I like being able to report that. Naski looks pleased, too. The snow has eased off for now and while clouds remain it feels quite bright. Down at base, anyway. Almost as if the sun might break through. Still, forecasts seem to say there's a chance of light snow occasionally today and tomorrow, with a better chance of clearer skies on Thursday. • Niseko Now: Monday 5th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 739cm Posted on Monday 5th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And what a really beautiful Monday morning it is, too. We don't get many days like this here. Blue skies, sunny, good and cold... stunning! Making it even better is the 20cm or so of fresh snow since yesterday. Last night I can't remember expecting such weather this morning, but... thank you. Today is indeed a very good day to be here and there are going to be a lot of excited people out there today. Let's appreciating with safety heart. (Tomorrow might be sunny too, with the next snow due later in the week). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -9℃, 20cm snowfall and calm. Moiwa 800m: -10.5℃, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift accumulation, good visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -13℃, light wind, good visibility, snowdrifts development. Annupuri 1000m: -11.7℃, N4m/s. Village 1000m: -10.6℃, N4.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.1℃, E54.5m/s. Hanazono#3: -9.1℃, calm. Coastal data: Benkei cape calm, Kamui cape E5m/s, 1025hPa, 0.6m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat. Calm morning at sea and the mountains. Good visibility. Looking at this morning's observations and weather data, the avalanche risk is low. All gates are scheduled to open. Seek the ski patrol’s advice at the gates. Outside the gate is not the resort anymore. If you blindly follow someone else’s track, you might get lost or fall in the creek. One injury could ruin your vacation. Please have a read through the Niseko Rules flyer, these should be available at the ticket office or hotel receptions. Again, the area outside the gate is not the resort anymore. It is not mandatory to carry avalanche rescue gear, however it is highly recommended to do so. It may save your life, as well as your buddies’ too. The mountain will be crowded today, don’t stay at the bottom of the gullies, and be careful not to trigger a slide at the top of a slope. The snow condition is fantastic. Have a nice day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Monday 5th February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. So it was more of the cloud, light snow and wind mix yesterday. Seems less windy this morning and it is keeping cold. Not a whole lot of snow on the latest forecasts, I'm afraid, making it more difficult to know what to write! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A tiny dusting of snow overnight and another day of high, gray skies. Looks like we could see some snow coming in tonight, though, and maybe for a few days. That would be a nice change from the current short cycles of snow then sun, cold then warm. Those snowpack figures are getting pretty low again for some of the resorts... And it has just started to snow, as I was finishing up and ready to push the submit button. • Niseko Now: Sunday 4th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 720cm Posted on Sunday 4th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I am very pleased to be able to report another 17cm of fresh snow this morning. Double digits each morning so far this month. I like it. :) As I write this there are some lovely big flakes of snow coming down outside my place. They look nice and fluffy. More! More! All top lifts are open this morning and gates should be open too. If you are fortunate enough to be here and able to enjoy, have fun and take care. There are a lot of people around, everyone seeking out that fresh snow; there's enough to go around. Today is the first day of the the 74th Sapporo Snow Festival, over in... Sapporo City. The three sites (Odori, Susukino and Tsudome) plan to be open until next Sunday, 11th February. Lots going on but those big snow sculptures are usually very omoshiroi. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -7°, 20cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -10.0, WNW6.2m/s, 20cm new snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: no instrument data, light winds, 20cm new snow, wind rippled. Annupuri 1100m: -12.3°, WNW7.3m/s, 20cm new snow, good visibility. Village 1000m: -11.0°, W5.4m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -11.6°, SSW2.6m/s, 20cm new snow, calm. Hanazono 3 : -8.8°, NW0.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NW12m/s. Kamui Cape: SW8m/s, 1021hPa, wave 1.0m. The isobars are spreading apart and the seas and mountains are calm. Cold air continues to flow in. Based on data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrols instructions and only exit the ski area through a gate. Once you go through the gates you are not in the ski area anymore, you are in the backcountry. Out of bounds riding requires preparation, knowledge, and experience. Guides, leaders, and parents have a huge responsibility. Niseko Rules allow the gates to be opened on days that are deemed safe for out of bounds riding. However no day is ever 100% safe or even close to it in the backcountry. Many dangers exist . Out the gate is into a wild mountain environment and safety depends on each individual's actions. The snow is wonderful. There will be many people out there today. Don't start an avalanche, expect people to be below you. Niseko respects your freedom to ride, but your safety is always a concern. Have a good day. The light and wind mode appears to be continuing this morning with up to 5cm being reported on the slopes since yesterday. A good Geto Kogen style heavy snow would be welcome. Unfortunately there really doesn't seem to be anything like that on the radar so we might have to make do with light snowfall at times. And hope to be surprised. • Niseko Now: Saturday 3rd February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 703cm Posted on Saturday 3rd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Here we are at the first weekend in February and there's more fresh snow to report. 11cm is my measurement and both Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting up to 20cm on the mountain. We're on a roll, and hopefully it will continue for a bit longer. Nice and cold too. With less wind this morning, the top lifts are scheduled to open so it should be an excite morning all round. See below for some gate info. Roll. Mmmmmm. Time for some toast. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -9°, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -13.0°, NNE12.4m/s, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: no data. Annupuri 1100m: -15.2°, NNE4.7m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -13.6°, NNW6.9m/s, heavy snowfall, bad visibility. Hanazono 1000m: -14.8°, NNE11.5m/s, snawfall easing. Hanazono 3 : -12.2°, NNE3.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:N13m/s. Kamui Cape N9m/s, 1026hPa, wave 2.6m. The isobars are starting to open up and the snowfall is easing, but it's cold. Above 800m cornices and snowdrifts are slowly developing. From observation and data the avalanche risk is still high on Backbowl Sidewall, West ridge SW face, Annupuri Osawa 1100m cornice face and East Ridge upper cornice face. Gates 1, 2, 3 will be closed. Other gates yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. Snowdrifts are starting to stabilise, however the peak gates cannot be opened yet due to the sheer numbers of inexperienced people heading out the gates. Experienced riders please be patient. Once you go through the gates you are not in the ski area anymore, you are on your own. The snow is fantastic in the trees below 1000m. Avoid carelessly stimulating knolls above the tree line. Avoid avalanche paths by staying out of the valley bottoms. Avalanches are a natural occurrence, people being involved makes them an accident. There is no 100% safety guarantee in this sport. Always be cautious. Accidents can be avoided if you think and act accordingly. Is the beacon on?
