The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . There was some light snow overnight (I am told!), and there is still cloud in places but we have an increasing amount of blue sky this morning. The sun is making its presence felt but it is nice and cold, so conditions should be excellent. Looking ahead, clear skies and sunshine are forecast for the first half of the week. We're all hoping that it will remain cold through until the next snow comes (not much on the weekly forecast right now). The next few days should be particularly good. Just a little fresh snow to report (varying amounts across the region). Lots of blue sky. Sunshine. Some cloud hanging around the for views too. Not windy. Top lifts open. A real feel-good and excite morning. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -4°, trace new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -4.8, N4.7m/s. Mikaeri 764m: no data. Annupuri 1100m: -7.7°, N6.2m/s. Village 1000m: -6.5°, NNW9.3m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -7°, no wind data. Hanazono 3 : -4.5°, SSE – windspeed n/a. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: ENE7m/s. Kamui Cape NE3m/s, 1020hPa, wave 1.6m. There is a high pressure zone with shallow gradient over the Okhotsk. The sea and mountains are calm. From data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. The snow isn't bad. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before going out of bounds. Do not go out of bounds when the gates are closed. Do not duck ropes, they are not a suggestion, dangers exist. It is not compulsory to carry beacons or search tools, but highly recommended if you are going out of bounds. With them you can not only save your own life, but your friends too. Causing a cornice to collapse can trigger an avalanche, don't be the fool who causes an avalanche. There are many people in the valley below. Also for your own safety don't stop in the valley below these fools. There is no safety in this sport. However, most accidents can be prevented if you are careful. We have had just a bit of snow (less than to the north in central Yuzawa town) and while there is still some wind around the top area is open. In fact, almost all runs are now available. Looks like the Number 1 gondola was also scheduled to be open (?) but it is not open due to 解氷作業 (defreezing?) Fireworks tonight after night skiing. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A tiny addition to the snowpack, as really light snow continued to fall all through yesterday and into today. Nice light stuff, too, on top of a fairly well settled base of new snow. If you're not used to skiing in a lot of heavy powder, take it easy out in the backcountry, too! Myoko powder is a nice, firm-bodied, creamy material, not ankle-deep, super light stuff, and we have had some injuries and rescues in the past two weeks. Enjoy the views, get used to the snow and say hello to the trees. Not much else, except that it's staying cold despite clearing up a bit today, which makes for a great day on the slopes or above on the mountain. We do have some warmer weather (maybe rain again?) later this week. Hope that changes, because snow will follow again. Hope that expands! The snow that some neighbouring regions seem to have got (hello, Yuzawa) didn't really hit Nozawa yesterday and overnight with just dustings really since yesterday. Cloudy skies this morning but there are some signs of breaks in the cloud at the moment. All lifts are go! Should be a good weekend. This morning the official site shows 2cm of snowfall on the top Yamabiko area since 3pm yesterday... and 20cm across base areas. That is clearly not correct. We are all allowed mistakes from time to time, of course. Even Naski. I don't know what is going on with the numbers at the moment, but hope they sort it out quickly. For the moment I'm taking that info off my report, but I'll keep an eye on it. I can only be confused so much! Update at 10am: The snowfall numbers seem to have been fixed up! 1-3cm (bottom-top) of snow reported since yesterday afternoon through 8am, with another 1cm in top areas added 8am-10am this morning. (I'll cover that last bit tomorrow). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just about 1cm of snow to report since yesterday. As I write this, it is snowing over at Hanazono, but there is a bit of sun breaking through on the Annupuri side of the mountain. So we have some varied weather conditions at the start of the weekend. It does feel milder this morning and is currently just over freezing at base. But perhaps the biggest news of the day is that there is less wind and those top lifts should be opening as planned. Hurray! Expect a mad rush to the top. Take care, folks. Let's Saturday. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -2°, calm, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -4.8°, N4.7m/s, snowdrift development, good visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -5°, wind crust. Niseko Village 1000m: -5.6°, N5.1m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -6.0°. Hanazono 3 : -4.2°, NNE5m/s, 30cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NE7m/s. Kamui Cape E3m/s, 1015hPa, wave 2.2m. The typical winter atmospheric pressure pattern continues, the isobars are moving further apart, the wind is dropping and yesterdays wind blown snow is starting to stabilise. From observation and data peak gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrols advice. And as always – outside the gates is not the ski resort. Niseko respects rider freedom and allows them to ride outside the ski resort, subject to conditions though, by opening and closing the gates. Do not leave the ski area when the gate are closed. Never duck any ropes and never enter Strictly Off Limits areas Haru no Taki or Yunosawa. Today's heavy accumulation of aeolian snow can easily cause boards to get stuck. Ride carefully. The East Ridge (Higashi One) cornice has grown massively, do not go near it. Beware cracks around 1200m onthe East Ridge. The avalanche danger continues on Osawa cornice slope and Backbowl sidewall. Do not traverse under the cornices. Avoid being in the bottom of a valley, which is an avalanche path. There is no safety in winter mountains. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, but accidents happen because people are involved. Is the beacon on? Wind is still with messing with plans this morning with the mid to upper areas of the mountain closed again, along with the Dragondola connecting to Kagura). Hopefully it will be calmer over the weekend letting us all get to the top and enjoy the fresh snow of the last several days. There might be clouds and light snow at times, but also the chance that we will see some sun.
