The light and wind mode appears to be continuing this morning with up to 5cm being reported on the slopes since yesterday. A good Geto Kogen style heavy snow would be welcome. Unfortunately there really doesn't seem to be anything like that on the radar so we might have to make do with light snowfall at times. And hope to be surprised. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I am very pleased to be able to report another 17cm of fresh snow this morning. Double digits each morning so far this month. I like it. :) As I write this there are some lovely big flakes of snow coming down outside my place. They look nice and fluffy. More! More! All top lifts are open this morning and gates should be open too. If you are fortunate enough to be here and able to enjoy, have fun and take care. There are a lot of people around, everyone seeking out that fresh snow; there's enough to go around. Today is the first day of the the 74th Sapporo Snow Festival, over in... Sapporo City. The three sites (Odori, Susukino and Tsudome) plan to be open until next Sunday, 11th February. Lots going on but those big snow sculptures are usually very omoshiroi. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -7°, 20cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -10.0, WNW6.2m/s, 20cm new snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: no instrument data, light winds, 20cm new snow, wind rippled. Annupuri 1100m: -12.3°, WNW7.3m/s, 20cm new snow, good visibility. Village 1000m: -11.0°, W5.4m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -11.6°, SSW2.6m/s, 20cm new snow, calm. Hanazono 3 : -8.8°, NW0.5m/s. Based on data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrols instructions and only exit the ski area through a gate. Once you go through the gates you are not in the ski area anymore, you are in the backcountry. Out of bounds riding requires preparation, knowledge, and experience. Guides, leaders, and parents have a huge responsibility. Niseko Rules allow the gates to be opened on days that are deemed safe for out of bounds riding. However no day is ever 100% safe or even close to it in the backcountry. Many dangers exist . Out the gate is into a wild mountain environment and safety depends on each individual's actions. The snow is wonderful. There will be many people out there today. Don't start an avalanche, expect people to be below you. Niseko respects your freedom to ride, but your safety is always a concern. We have had a kind of sort of dusting+ of snow around base areas since yesterday, nothing significant, and the ski area this morning is reporting 5-7cm of snow on the upper Uenotaira and Yamabiko areas. So a bit of fresh. Visibility remains limited on those top areas this morning. Various forecasts disagree on what to expect from now and over the weekend. Some say cloud. Some give us the chance of some clearer skies. Whatever, it should be keeping fairly cold (if not extremely cold), which is good. And then there's more snow due in the first part of next week. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Here we are at the first weekend in February and there's more fresh snow to report. 11cm is my measurement and both Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting up to 20cm on the mountain. We're on a roll, and hopefully it will continue for a bit longer. Nice and cold too. With less wind this morning, the top lifts are scheduled to open so it should be an excite morning all round. See below for some gate info. Roll. Mmmmmm. Time for some toast. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -9°, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -13.0°, NNE12.4m/s, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: no data. Annupuri 1100m: -15.2°, NNE4.7m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -13.6°, NNW6.9m/s, heavy snowfall, bad visibility. Hanazono 1000m: -14.8°, NNE11.5m/s, snawfall easing. Hanazono 3 : -12.2°, NNE3.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:N13m/s. Kamui Cape N9m/s, 1026hPa, wave 2.6m. The isobars are starting to open up and the snowfall is easing, but it's cold. Above 800m cornices and snowdrifts are slowly developing. From observation and data the avalanche risk is still high on Backbowl Sidewall, West ridge SW face, Annupuri Osawa 1100m cornice face and East Ridge upper cornice face. Gates 1, 2, 3 will be closed. Other gates yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. Snowdrifts are starting to stabilise, however the peak gates cannot be opened yet due to the sheer numbers of inexperienced people heading out the gates. Experienced riders please be patient. Once you go through the gates you are not in the ski area anymore, you are on your own. The snow is fantastic in the trees below 1000m. Avoid carelessly stimulating knolls above the tree line. Avoid avalanche paths by staying out of the valley bottoms. Avalanches are a natural occurrence, people being involved makes them an accident. There is no 100% safety guarantee in this sport. Always be cautious. Accidents can be avoided if you think and act accordingly. Is the beacon on? The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Well, we got some snow overnight; not a huge amount, but with plenty of wind to give us a lot of drifts and blowing snow in the evening. It's pretty small, dense snow, too; no fluffy white smoke today. Some ice down there from the rain that preceded the snow, so car windows and doors were pretty well covered this morning. Lots of icicles hanging around, too. There was some talk that the No. 5 chair at Akakan, the top lift wasn't running, but it seems to be going now. Nothing much else exciting, to be honest. It's cold enough today, which is better than the usual cycle of snow and then sun/warm. Looks like it will stay colder—and could that be a few continuous days of snow from the 5th or so? Better not jinx it by saying more (yes, I am getting superstitious about this, since the snow walls are only about a meter tall, where we should be astounding the tourists with huge walls of snow everywhere). As it got colder yesterday we go some fresh snow and by this morning the ski area has reporting almost 20cm in the top areas of the ski area and 5cm down at base areas. Nice to see that, of course. It is still quite cold this morning and there has been some light snow on the mountain but it is generally just cloudy. Looks like there will be some sun over the weekend with the next fresh snow due early week. My main wish for the weekend is that it stays cold. And that everyone has a safe and fun time!
